I thank Prof. Schamp so much for all the enthusiasm, support, advice, patience and for having read my writing probably as many times as I have. I have been privileged to access his enormous knowledge on industrial clusters and the evolutionary approach. The regular and stimulating meetings with him over the whole course of my Ph.D study have indeed enhanced my understanding of the evolution of industrial clusters in the contexts of transitional countries and hopefully my academic thinking! At the same time, his goodwill, humor and extraordinary wisdom have always encouraged me to overcome various difficulties when I stayed in foreign environments. Prof. Schamp has greatly inspired me in my endeavour, influenced it and shaped it. Special thanks to Prof. Wang Jici at Peking University in China. It was Prof. Wang who opened up a window for my study in Europe since she whole heartedly recommended me to Prof. Schamp when I applied for overseas studies in 2004, which provided me with a wonderful opportunity to enhance my academic capabilities. During my doctoral studies, I constantly got enlightened guidance from her mostly by emails or discussion on the online forum of the website of China’s industry cluster (www. clusterstudy.com) which was launched by her, other Chinese scholars and me in May, 2003. Her unparalleled knowledge of China’s industrial clusters provided me with one of main thought sources for my empirical exploration in the context of China. Amongst the other Chinese scholars who contributed significantly to my understanding of evolutionary economics, I thank especially Prof. Jia Gengliang at Renming University in China who is very familiar with heterodox economics, and evolutionary economics in particular. He tutored me in evolutionary economics at the beginning of my study on this approach in 2004, and tirelessly gave me advice mostly by emails and personal meetings in China. Similarly, the discussion with Prof. Yang Hutao at Zhongnan University of Economics & Law was beneficial. Prof. Yang Hutao was ever a visiting scholar at the business school of the University of Hertfordshire where Prof. Geoffrey M. Hodgson works. Many thanks also to all the interviewees in Jiling province for kindly sharing their inspiring stories in creating success of the Tonghua traditional Chinese medicine industry and/or their insights on the TCM industry. Without their open, candid and crucial information input, this thesis would not have been possible. I would especially like to thank Prof. Cui Yuechun at Jilin Provincial Academy of Social Sciences, Prof. Yi Baozhong at Jilin University and Prof. Wang Liqun at Tonghua Normal College for their intellectual input and assistance in organizing fieldwork. The region is the grain production and ecological security base of China where the fertile and productive Mollisols are distributed. Though the region was agriculturally developed relatively recently, it went through high intensity cultivation and fast succession processes within short-time scales. Coupled with irrational farming practice choice and land use, hillslope erosion and gully erosion are seriously threatening agricultural production and environmental stability in the region. The awareness of gully erosion by the local governments started in the 1970s, and conservation measures were thus implemented. In this paper, based on our survey, communications with local farmers and stakeholders as well as investigation for gully erosion for the past three years, we summarize the practical and efficient practices to manage gully erosion developed by researchers and farmers in Northeast China during the past 50 years. These practices include various drop structures, soil check dams, masonry check dams, gabion check dams, wicker check dams, continuous live wicker, a shrub plant enclosure, and an arbor plant enclosure.

Previous studies have used nighttime light (NTL) imagery to calculate population density. +is study analyzes the spatiotemporal evolution of the population in Northeast China based on linear regression analyses of NPP-VIIRS NTL imagery and statistical population data from 36 cities in Northeast China from 2012 to 2017. Based on a comparison of the estimation results in different years, we observed the following. (1) +e population of Northeast China showed an overall decreasing trend from 2012–2017, with population changes of +31,600, −960,800, −359,800, −188,000, and −1,127,600 in the respective years. (2) With the overall population loss trend in Northeast China, the population increased in only three cities, namely, Shenyang, Dalian, and Panjin, with an average increase during the six-year period of 24,200, 6,500, and 2,000 people, respectively.

    Appendix 3 Profile of Tonghua County Tonghua County is located in the southeast of Jilin Province, the southwest foot of Changbai Mountain and the middle reaches of Hunjiang River. The exact position of Tonghua County is at east longitude 125°17'--126°25' and north latitude 41°19'--42°07', with Baishan City bordering in the east, Jian City adjacent to the south, Huairen County of Liaoning Province and Xinbin County at a junction in the west, and Liuhe County linking in the north. Tonghua County is typical of mountainous terrain with an area of 3726.5 square kilometers, which is known as ‘Eight mountains, half water and half field’. The county hall is located in the Kuaidamao town, which has jurisdiction over 5 villages, 10 towns and 160 administrative villages. The county has a population of 250,000 consisted of 17 nationalities, which are Han, Manchu, Korean, Hui and other nationalities. With the rapid and healthy development of county economy, the developing environment and urban civilization of Tonghua County have been greatly improved, and people's mental outlook and urban image also take on a new look. The county has won honorary titles successively as National Health County, National Garden County, National Hundreds of Small and Medium Cities of the Most Investment Potential, National Harmonious City of the Public, National Afforestation Model County, National Green Well-off County, Model County of National Unity and Progress, National Advance County of Human Security and Civil Affairs, National Advanced County of Hunyuxinfeng Household Activities, National Civilization County.   • Songliao Basin
    Songliao Basin Spread across the vast territory of China are hundreds of basins, where developed sedimentary rocks originated from the Paleozoic to the Cenozoic eras, covering over four million square kilometers. Abundant oil and gas resources are entrapped in strata ranging from the eldest Sinian Suberathem to the youngest quaternary system. The most important petroliferous basins in China include Tarim, Junggar, Turpan, Qaidam, Ordos, Songliao, Bohai Bay, Erlian, Sichuan, North Tibet, South Huabei and Jianghan basins. There are also over ten mid- to-large sedimentary basins along the extensive sea area of China, with those rich in oil and gas include the South Yellow Sea, East Sea, Zhujiangkou and North Bay basins. These basins, endowing tremendous hydrocarbon resources with various genesis and geologic features, have nurtured splendid civilizations with distinctive characteristics portrayed by unique natural landscape, specialties, local culture, and the people. In China, CNPC’s oil and gas operations mainly focus on nine petroliferous basins, namely Tarim, Junggar, Turpan, Ordos, Qaidam, Songliao, Erlian, Sichuan, and the Bohai Bay. The Songliao Basin is a large terrestrial sedimentary basin surrounded by the Greater Khingan, Lesser Khingan and Changbai mountains in Northeast China. It spans 260,000km2 across the provinces of Heilongjiang, Jilin, and Liaoning, and is crossed by the Songhuajiang and Liaohe rivers. The Songliao Basin is situated in a humid and semi-humid region in the frigid-temperate and temperate zones of China. A cold and humid forest, meadows, and grassland comprise its landscape. It is a sedimentary basin in terms of geology, having lowland landform characterized by high surroundings and a low center.

Methods: Aerial parts of T. triquetrum were extracted under reflux and partitioned by n-butanol to generate HC. The effects of HC consumption on blood glucose and lipids, insulin resistance, and liver glucose metabolism were evaluated in vivo. The main compounds of HC were tested for their effects on stimulating glucose consumption and uptake by HepG2 hepatocytes and C2C12 myotubes. Results: After HC treatment, body fat, subcutaneous fat, and epidydimal fat masses decreased (p < 0.05), while mean daily food intake was unaffected. HC (200–400 mg/kg) decreased fasting blood glucose, glycosylated serum protein (GSP), and glycosylated hemoglobin (HbAlc); it also lowered hyperinsulinemia, improved oral glucose tolerance, and reduced hyperlipidemia and liver fat content (p < 0.05).
