Degree awarded September 2012 ii © 2012 Gretchen Louise Hill iii THESIS ABSTRACT Gretchen Louise Hill Master of Arts Department of Geography September 2012 Title: Inventing the Basque Block: Heritage Tourism and Identity Politics in Boise, Idaho This thesis examines the social, political, and economic underpinnings of creating a place for Basque immigrant descendants by the use of the Basque Block in downtown Boise, Idaho. In the past, unlike other immigrant groups in the United States, Basques lacked the desire to assimilate into the US and remained relatively invisible. Simultaneously, they created subtle ethnic communities and maintained transnational sociospatial ties with Basque Provinces in Europe. Today, these transnational ties are stronger, which has profoundly influenced the creation of the Basque Block. The Basques strive to maintain their heritage landscapes to retain their cultural identity and educate present and future generations about their unique legacy.

ETHNICITY AND IDENTITY IN A BASQUE BORDERLAND: RIOJA ALAVESA, SPAIN By BARBARA ANN HENDRY A DISSERTATION PRESENTED TO THE GRADUATE SCHOOL OF THE UNIVERSITY OF FLORIDA IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY UNIVERSITY OF FLORIDA 1991 Copyright 1991 by Barbara Ann Hendry ACKNOWLEDGMENTS The help of numerous individuals in Spain and the United States enabled me to complete this dissertation— it is difficult to adequately acknowledge them all in these few short pages. To begin, without the generous hospitality, friendship, and assistance of many people in Rioja and Rioja Alavesa in 1985 and 1987, this research would not have been possible. For purposes of confidentiality, I will not list individual names, but, thank all of those in Albelda de Iregua, San Vicente de la Sonsierra, Brihas, Elciego, Laguardia, and, especially, Lapuebla de Labarca, who graciously let me share in their lives. Friends in the city of Logroho were also supportive, especially Charo Cabezon and Julio Valcazar. Stephanie Berdofe shared her home during my first weeks in the field, and buoyed my spirits and allayed my doubts throughout the fieldwork. Carmelo Lison Tolosana welcomed me to Spain and introduced me to several of his students. Maribel Fociles Rubio and Jose Lison Areal discussed their respective studies of identity in Rioja and Huesca, and helped me to formulate the interview schedule I used in Rioja Alavesa. They, and Jose's wife. Pilar, provided much warm hospitality during several brief trips to Madrid. iii The government administrators I interviewed in Rioja Alavesa and Vitoria were cooperative and candid.

  • Towards a ‘Europe of Flows’? Discourse, Power and Space in the Development of a Transnational High-Speed Rail Line in the European Union
Towards a ‘Europe of Flows’? Discourse, Power and Space in the Development of a Transnational High-Speed Rail Line in the European Union Thesis submitted by Diego Garcia Mejuto for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Planning Studies The Bartlett School of Planning University College London (UCL) Declaration I, Diego García Mejuto, confirm that the work presented in this thesis is my own. Where information has been derived from other sources, I confirm that this has been indicated in the thesis. London, 24 May 2015 2 Abstract The aim of this thesis is to contribute to the understanding of European integration through a focus on the politics surrounding transnational highspeed rail infrastructure. Although it has been argued that a discourse on the creation of a ‘Europe of Flows’ has become dominant in policy development, the spatial conflicts that this type of infrastructure involves and the wide array of political actors concerned cast doubts on the smooth development of such a space. The thesis aim is pursued through a critical approach that considers policy problems as socially constructed, seeks to reveal the power struggles in policy-making, and places space at the centre of the study of politics. Thus, an analytical framework that combines discourse analysis, social and political theories of power and a spatiallynuanced approach informed by human geography debates on scale and relationality was adopted and applied to the case of a cross-border and EU-relevant highspeed rail line in the Spanish Basque Country. The case study first demonstrates the existence of a hegemonic discourse on transport infrastructure development, which accommodated a variety of concerns according to different scalar frames and was produced and reproduced in state, private sector and mainstream media discursive arenas.

  • Vernacular and Academic Modes in Architecture and Town Planning
PHIL & TECH 2:1 Fall 1996 Alonso, Arzoz, Ursua, Reflections on Architecture/3 REFLECTIONS ON ARCHITECTURE: VERNACULAR AND ACADEMIC MODES IN ARCHITECTURE AND TOWN PLANNING Andoni Alonso, Inaki Arzoz, and Nicanor Ursua, University of the Basque Country A house — in American thought — an apple, an American vineyard have nothing in common; house and apple have nothing in common with the plantings so thoroughly penetrated by the ancestors' hopes and concerns. Experienced and animated things, things which share our knowledge, decay and cannot any more be substituted for. Possibly we are the last ones to have experienced these things. Our responsibility is not only to preserve the memory of them (that would amount to little and be very uncertain); we must preserve their human, their "fireside" values. —Rainer Maria Rilke INTRODUCTION The paper which we present here is a brief theory-slanted summary of a work, "Contemporary Architecture and Town Planning." It was written by an interdisciplinary working group attached to the magazine, Texts de Critical Aesthetics, associated with the University of the Basque Country in Spain. After the earlier publication of a special issue, "Other Modern Architectures" (devoted to a critical analysis of modern architecture), and some reevaluations of marginal trends such as vernacular architecture, our group has developed a different line of investigation. The new focus is not only theoretical but practical, and we have been able, by looking at architectural changes, to explain the reasons for cultural changes at the end of the twentieth century. The essence of this paper is to provide some of our theoretical conclusions, which were arrived at by contrasting vernacular and academic ways of building.
