Interdisciplinary Minor in Women’s and Gender Studies ABOUT THE INTERDISCIPLINARY MINOR IN WOMEN’S AND GENDER STUDIES As a student in the interdisciplinary minor in Women’s and Gender Studies at St. John’s University, you examine how social structures of power based on gender, sexuality, race, ethnicity, social class, and other intersecting forces influence our lives and communities. While women’s and gender studies continue to explore women’s experiences and underrepresentation in knowledge production, the field also examines the ways gender relations, including masculinities, combine with other categories of difference and become embedded in social, political, and cultural formations. This 18-credit minor is an excellent complement to all majors. The professors who teach in the minor represent the departments of sociology, history, government and politics, English, and art and design and bring their expertise to the study of gender inequalities. With their guidance, you delve into a rich body of knowledge to explore historical, artistic, scientific, and literary issues through the lens of gender. You can select the minor in Women’s and Gender Studies at any time prior to graduation, as long as you satisfactorily complete the required courses. With approval of the program director, you may be able to apply internship credits to the minor and explore particular gender issues through real-world work experience. WHAT CAN I DO WITH A MINOR IN WOMEN’S AND GENDER STUDIES? With the strong analytical, communication, and research skills you develop in the minor, along with your understanding of cultural, social, and political forces that shape concepts of gender, you’ll be a competitive applicant for jobs in government, public policy, research, or service organizations. -

Witches sabbath( the great he- goat) Continue Otherwise known as the Great On-Goat, Francisco Goya provides a visually stunning and historically terrifying representation of this famous mural that adorned the mid-1800s that brought to life vivid and terrifying memories of the Spanish Inquisition. The description of the painting depicts Satan surrounded by a group of frightened and anxiously mutilated witches. Satan appears as an almost shady goat whose characteristics are not so easy to see or define. A goat man appears with his mouth wide open, as if he are shouting curses (or instructions) to his closest followers. He appeals to the modern belief that power is asserted through fear, not respect for power or title. Women's age varies, but throughout their work they have similar distortions. They seem frightened, but overwhelmingly obedient, as if they obey Satan's orders and intentions to obey. He is considered to be part of fourteen or more paintings depicting Goyah's Black Paintings. The story of Francisco Goya took extreme measures and risks on the heels of the terrible Spanish Inquisition, as well as the witch hunt and trials that followed soon after. Goya directly and visually attacks the feelings and mentality of the time, which reveled in superstitions and religious horror on the dark side of human nature. Although this mural (among other works by Goya) was moderately hidden during its creation for fear of recriminations in his artistic commentary, it is considered one of his best works - all of which appear later in his career. Francisco Goya retreated from the public eye and was constantly afraid to go crazy. -

5 weaPons of mass seduction Performing Pop Masculinity To all intents and purposes Harry Styles, unofficial frontman of internationally renowned boy band One Direction, could easily be mistaken for a young Mick Jagger (see Figure 5.1). The men’s good looks, broad smiles, matching windswept hair styles and shared fashion sensibilities bridge a 51-year age gap. Both are singers who have enjoyed the adoration of a passionate fan following, yet in terms of the version of masculinity each represents, the two could not be more different. While Jagger is openly admired by both sexes, few men admit to being fans of Harry Styles whose following is commonly depicted as restricted to teen and pre-teen females. Unlike the older man, Styles radiates a wholesome, good humoured exuberance, appears to genuinely like female company and is never happier than when exalting the women in his life. He also differs from the Rolling Stones leader in showing a marked preference for older female partners, whereas Jagger figure 5.1 Harry Styles. 84 Weapons of Mass Seduction is always seen in the company of much younger women.1 Jagger’s androgy- nous charm is tinged with danger and more than a hint of misogyny: he has a reputation for treating his partners callously, and from the outset, chauvinism themes of mistrust permeated the Rolling Stones’ songbook.2 The younger singer is also androgynous but his failure to comply with core characteristics of normative masculinity underscores much of the antipathy directed towards by critics, highlighting deeply entrenched prejudice against those who fail to comply with accepted expressions of gender. -

El miedo a las mujeres se expresó desde antiguo en la figura de la madre insensible y cruel, capaz de arrebatar la vida a sus hijos. Desde la Medea griega, el mito de la infanticida terminó plasmándose en la Europa Moderna en las brujas devoradoras de niños. Entre los arquetipos extremos de la madre-bruja asesina y la madre idealizada, se sitúa un tipo de maldad ambigua y sutil: la de la madre dominante que, aunque no elimina a sus hijos físicamente, ejerce una influencia debilitadora y maligna sobre ellos. El tabú de las malas madres afloró tímidamente en la literatura europea desde la Edad Media, para alcanzar su expresión más refinada con el auge de la narrativa gótica y el Romanticismo. Since time immemorial, the figure of the mother has sparked ambivalent emotional reactions, ranging from adoration to deep-rooted fear. The myth of the child-killing woman was materialized during the Early Modern Age in the classic witch. The transformation of the myth of the evil mother from devouring witch to deadly ghost occurred in Europe during the Enlightenment and the early Romantic era.Then, the traditional wicked witch mother adopted a guise that was considerably more ambiguous and subtle, though no less threatening: that of the dominant mother who might not physically eliminate her children but nonetheless exerted a debilitating influence over them. -

Evidentemente la desconcertante evolución social y polí tica de la última década del siglo XX parecen confirmar tal aseveración. Todos los principios é ticos del filósofo alemá n Hegel (1770-1831) que a lo largo de un siglo engendraron movimientos tan dispares como el anarquismo libertario, el comunismo autoritario y el fascismo se han desmoronado como un juego de naipes dejando un importante vací o ideológico que ha sumido en el estupor colectivo a nuestra desorientada generación. Si el siglo XIX fue el siglo de las esperanzas el XX ha sido el de los desengaños. Las creencias má s firmes y má s sólidas se han hundido en su propia rigidez. Por otra parte la serie interminable de crisis económica, polí tica y social de nuestra civilización parece no tener fin. Ante tanta decepción sólo dos principios han permanecido inalterables: el amor y la muerte. Eros y Tá natos, los polos opuestos de un mundo cada vez má s neurótico y vací o. De Tánatos tenemos sobrados ejemplos a cada cual má s siniestro: odio, intolerancia, guerras civiles, nacionalismo exacerbado, xenofobia, racismo, conservadurismo a ultranza, intransigencia, fanatismo… El Sé ptimo Arte ha captado esa evolución social con unas pelí culas cada vez má s violentas, con espectaculares efectos especiales que no nos dejan perder detalle de los aspectos má s sombrí os de nuestro entorno. -

Ballet Hispanico: CARMEN.maquia Facebook Twitter Print Email Pinterest More Sat, March 21, 2020 @ 7:30pm Category: dance Victoria Theater @ New Jersey Performing Arts Center (NJPAC) One Center Street Newark, NJ 07102 Ballet Hispánico, the nation’s premier Latin dance organization, brings its celebrated CARMEN.maquia, a sensual, full-length work created by Spanish choreographer Gustavo Ramírez Sansano, inspired by Bizet’s beloved opera. Fueled by physically charged choreography that fuses contemporary dance with Spanish paso doble and flamenco, CARMEN.maquia takes its cues from the 1845 novella by Prosper Mérimée and the 1875 opera by Georges Bizet. The ballet tells the dramatic story of Carmen, a spirited gypsy, and her love triangle with the doting Don Jose, an army officer, and Escamillo, a bullfighter. In his version, Sansano reimagines Carmen in a Picasso-inspired setting, with a white, canvas-like set and sculptural costumes made to evoke the inside of traditional flamenco attire. Bizet’s classic score remains the soundtrack, in the form of various orchestral versions with no vocals. Currently under the artistic direction of Eduardo Vilaro, Ballet Hispánico tours worldwide with a diverse repertory by some of the foremost choreographers of our time as well as emerging artists. The company is acclaimed for works that fuse Latin dance with classical and contemporary techniques to create a new style in which theatricality and passion propel every move. “Ballet Hispánico shows what it is to be Latino in the modern world,” says The Financial Times.
