Die Idee, die stärksten Nationalmannschaften der Welt zu einem Turnier um den Titel des Weltmeisters zusammen zu bringen, geht auf eine Gruppe französischer Fußballfunktionäre um den visionären Jules Rimet zurück, die sich um 1920 zusammengefunden hatte. Daher trug die vergoldete Trophäe den Namen "Jules-Rimet"- Pokal. In den dreißiger Jahren fanden drei Turniere um diesen Pokal statt, bevor der Zweite Weltkrieg ausbrach und 12 Jahre lang keine Fußball-WM ausgetragen wurde. Nach der Wiederaufnahme der Weltmeisterschaft erreichte das Turnier schnell seinen heutigen unangefochtenen Status als größtes Mannschaftssportereignis der modernen Welt.
