Chinese Poetry of the Nineteenth Century
“Modern” Science and Technology in “Classical” Chinese Poetry of the Nineteenth Century J. D. Schmidt 㕥⎱䐆 University of British Columbia This paper is dedicated to the memory of Prof. Daniel Bryant (1942-2014), University of Victoria, a great scholar and friend. Introduction This paper examines poetry about science and technology in nineteenth- century China, not a common topic in poetry written in Classical Chinese, much less in textbook selections of classical verse read in high school and university curricula in China. Since the May Fourth/New Culture Movement from the 1910s to the 1930s, China’s literary canon underwent a drastic revision that consigned a huge part of its verse written after the year 907 to almost total oblivion, while privileging more popular forms from after that date that are written in vernacular Chinese, such as drama and novels.1 The result is that today most Chinese confine their reading of poetry in the shi 娑 form to works created before the end of the Tang Dynasty (618-907), missing the rather extensive body of verse about scientific and technological subjects that began in the Song Dynasty (960-1278), largely disappeared in the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644), and then flourished as never before in the late Qing period (1644-1912). Except for a growing number of specialist scholars in China, very few Chinese readers have explored the poetry of the nineteenth century—in my opinion, one of the richest centuries in classical verse— thinking that the writing of this age is dry and derivative. Such a view is a product of the culture wars of the early twentieth century, but the situation has not been helped by the common name given to the most important literary group of the nineteenth and early twentieth century, the Qing Dynasty Song School (Qingdai Songshi pai 㶭ẋ⬳娑㳦), a term which suggests that its poetry is imitative of earlier authors, particularly those of the Song Dynasty. -

Imperial China and the West provides correspondence from the Factories of Canton (modern Guangzhou) and from the missionaries and diplomats who entered China in the early nineteenth century, as well as from the envoys and missions sent to China from Britain and the later legation and consulates. Quarterly Activities Report 1) ACTION PLAN Mandate Given to the President The Secretariat-General and the regional secretariats have embarked on a reflection about the function and positioning of the secretariats with respect to the proposal to create Metropolis “offices”, particularly in China and India, but not only there. This work will make it possible to deliver on the mandate which the Board of Directors gave the Metropolis President after the Action Plan was adopted at the Porto Alegre Congress of 26 November 2011. The reflection was structured on the basis of the following questions: ● What is a regional secretariat (RS) in the Metropolis organization? What responsibilities does it have? What are its missions and tasks? What human and financial resources are required to perform these missions? Where do the resources come from? ● What is a Metropolis Office (MO)? What responsibilities does it have? What are its mission and tasks? What human and financial resources are required to perform these missions? Where do the resources come from? ● What is the best form of collaboration that can be achieved between the RSs and the MOs? Is there a hierarchical link between the two structures? If not, how are their relations organized? ● What modifications should be made to the articles of association and Metropolis’s internal regulations, considering the abovementioned approaches? A working meeting is scheduled in São Paulo on 15 June to prepare a common response from the secretariats. 1 Metropolis Initiatives Following a considerable publishing effort, the eight initiatives can now be consulted on the Metropolis website. Contracts have been drawn up to formalize the relations between Metropolis and the heads of the Initiatives, and the contracts are ready to be signed. -

The terminology of “scene” in the Western literary criticism usually refers to “a structual unit in drama” and “a mode of presentation in narrative”. Some literature criticists also claim that “scene” refers to “a structural unit in narrative”, though without further explanation. One of the main contributions of this theis is to define the term of “scene”, apply it stringently to the novel, Honglou meng, and thus make a narratology of “scene” in this novel. This thesis finds that “scene” as a structural unit in drama is characterized by a unity of continuity of characters, time, space and actions that are unified based on the same topic. “Topic” plays a decisive role in distinguishing “scenes”. On the basis of the definition of the term of “scene”, this theis also reveals how “scenes” transfer from each other by analyzing “scene transitions”. This thesis also finds that the characteristic of the narration in Honglou meng is “character-centered” ranther than “plot-centered”, by conducting research on the relationship between “scene”, “chapter” and “chapter title”. -

Leiden, Boston: Brill, 2010. Pp. xiv + 431. €130.00/$185.00. This volume marks a new stage in the study of Chinese women’s history and Chinese women’s writing. Ably edited by Grace Fong (who is also the editor of the series, “Women and Gender in China Studies,” in which the book appears) and veteran editor Ellen Widmer, it brings together essays by leading scholars of Chinese women’s writing. The subjects of the essays are not virgin topics for their authors, as almost all have published extensively on closely related themes and bodies of texts. But rather than rehashing existing work (only Fong’s essay has appeared elsewhere), the authors distil from their depth of knowledge of sources and context what are often gems of insight. The most significant contribution of the volume lies in the light these essays shed on Ming and Qing women’s consciousness. This is not a collection focused on male constructions of the feminine or representations of women, dotted with speculation on women’s subjectivity. Through the sources the chapters bring to light, the authors’ sophisticated interpretations of these often highly convention-bound sources, and—one of the outstanding features of the volume—the inclusion in the body of the essays of long passages from the sources in Chinese with English translations, The Inner Quarters and Beyond greatly enhances our understanding of women’s lives, feelings, and both personal and political preoccupations.
