Welcome to the Water Margin Podcast. This is episode 39. Last time, Wu Song came home from his business trip to find that his brother Wu Dalang had died under suspicious circumstances, so he started digging. First, the coroner who examined Wu Dalang’s body showed Wu Song two pieces of blackened bones retrieved from his brother’s cremation and told him how Ximen Qing had tried to bribe the coroner. Then, they tracked down Yunge (4,1), the teenager who had helped Wu Dalang catch his unfaithful wife and Ximen Qing in the act. Wu Song gave Yunge a few taels of silver for his father, and then took him and the coroner, Mr. He, to a restaurant. Wu Song ordered some food and told Yunge, “You may be young, but you show a filial heart in taking care of your father. Keep the money I just gave you for living expenses. I require your services. When we’re done, I’ll give you another 15 taels of silver. Now, tell me everything. How did you help my brother catch the adulterers?” “Ok, I’ll tell you, but don’t get too angry,” Yunge said. He then proceeded to recount the entire story of how he told Wu Dalang about his cheating wife and how they concocted a plan to catch her in the act, all the way up to the point where Ximen Qing kicked Wu Dalang in the chest. “I saw his wife trying to help him up but couldn’t, so I ran off in a panic,” Yunge said. -

Because that the novel gave a vicious and disastrous portrait of the environment and human suffering of that times, it would be regarded as a tragic novel. However, there was no tragedy according to the western concept of tragedy and The Golden Lotus was not the exception. The paper believes that The Golden Lotus has tragic factors but not is a tragic novel. It discusses the problem in the aspects of Chinese ancient natural environment, the Buddhism influence, the stereotyped narrative pattern of happy ending of Chinese ancient literature and the analysis of the novel content, in which the world that the novel represented was abnormal and malformed, the love and tenderness almost did not exist because of the ruthless pursuit for the material benefit. Origin Narratives: Reading and Reverence in Late-Ming China Noga Ganany Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY 2018 © 2018 Noga Ganany All rights reserved ABSTRACT Origin Narratives: Reading and Reverence in Late Ming China Noga Ganany In this dissertation, I examine a genre of commercially-published, illustrated hagiographical books. Recounting the life stories of some of China’s most beloved cultural icons, from Confucius to Guanyin, I term these hagiographical books “origin narratives” (chushen zhuan 出身傳). Weaving a plethora of legends and ritual traditions into the new “vernacular” xiaoshuo format, origin narratives offered comprehensive portrayals of gods, sages, and immortals in narrative form, and were marketed to a general, lay readership. Their narratives were often accompanied by additional materials (or “paratexts”), such as worship manuals, advertisements for temples, and messages from the gods themselves, that reveal the intimate connection of these books to contemporaneous cultic reverence of their protagonists. The content and composition of origin narratives reflect the extensive range of possibilities of late-Ming xiaoshuo narrative writing, challenging our understanding of reading. I argue that origin narratives functioned as entertaining and informative encyclopedic sourcebooks that consolidated all knowledge about their protagonists, from their hagiographies to their ritual traditions. Origin narratives also alert us to the hagiographical substrate in late-imperial literature and religious practice, wherein widely-revered figures played multiple roles in the culture. The reverence of these cultural icons was constructed through the relationship between what I call the Three Ps: their personas (and life stories), the practices surrounding their lore, and the places associated with them (or “sacred geographies”). -

RUIHUI HAN Abstract: Compared to other informal social network mechanisms, guanxi is more common in China and is the most typical. Even in daily life, it is indispensable. Hence, in Chinese fiction, the guanxi motif is prevalent and important. Interestingly, before the Ming dynasty, guanxi was not a literary motif in fiction. This article suggests that three factors contributed to the rise of the guanxi motif in fiction in the Ming dynasty. The first was the boom in fiction writing, especially in the genre of realism, that occurred in this era, which expanded the scope of literary representation. The second was the degradation of public morals in the Ming dynasty, a momentous social transition that Ming fiction writers noted and portrayed. Guanxi, as a disruptive social mechanism that dismantled previous models of human connection, became a focus in their works. The third was the fact that the atmosphere of money worship promoted by guanxi, together with official corruption, facilitated widespread social inequality. Guanxi, as the crux of inequity, inspired writers to expose social turpitude. More importantly, the guanxi motif satisfied the need for plot conflict in literary works. Thus, it became a necessary motif in Ming fiction. Mair. The purpose of the series is to make available to specialists and the interested public the results of research that, because of its unconventional or controversial nature, might otherwise go unpublished. The editor actively encourages younger, not yet well established, scholars and independent authors to submit manuscripts for consideration. Contributions in any of the major scholarly languages of the world, including Romanized Modern Standard Mandarin (MSM) and Japanese, are acceptable. In special circumstances, papers written in one of the Sinitic topolects (fangyan) may be considered for publication. Although the chief focus of Sino-Platonic Papers is on the intercultural relations of China with other peoples, challenging and creative studies on a wide variety of philological subjects will be entertained. This series is not the place for safe, sober, and stodgy presentations. Sino-Platonic Papers prefers lively work that, while taking reasonable risks to advance the field, capitalizes on brilliant new insights into the development of civilization. Guwangyan was composed between the publication of Jin Ping Mei (The Plum in the Golden Vase, 1617) and Honglou meng (Dream of the Red Chamber, 1791). These two masterpieces represent sexuality and desire by presenting domestic life in polygamous households within a larger social landscape. This dissertation explores the factors that shifted the literary discourse from the pornographic description of sexuality in Jin Ping Mei, to the representation of chaste love in Honglou meng. -
