As a result of the global movement toward greater recognition of gender equality and human dignity, the study of women as portrayed in Chinese literature has a long and rich history. A single volume cannot cover the enormous field but offers volume is a starting point for further research. Several renowned Chinese writers and researchers contributed to the book. But, there are sources for the study of Chinese women, and in my searches for his- torical materials I have looked not just in archives and libraries, but also in what I see, what I hear, and what I know from my own life and the world around me. Re- search and observation led me to the view, more than a decade ago, that Chinese women, past and present, were and are as varied as Chinese men in their capabili- ties, temperaments, and activities. There was and still is a wide range of diversity among Chinese women. Constant comparisons of the past and the present have also convinced me that there is significant historical continuity amid the many changes Chinese women have experienced in modern times. Hence, I have taken the position that during the past century Chinese women have gradually and slowly transformed themselves, by integrating indigenous traditions and foreign influ- ences. It is my conception that Chinese women, past and present, have had a thousand faces, a thousand person- alities, a thousand capabilities, and a thousand achieve- ments, in history, literature, culture, family, and soci- ety. Thanks to my many excellent teachers in Chinese language and literature when I was a student, I have always cherished reading Chinese literature. While doing research on Chinese women, it was only natural for me to seek inspiration and support from Chinese literature, which is an extremely rich source on women. I was curious whether images of women in Chinese lit- 13 XVIII erature could help us to understand and appreciate Chinese women in history and in contemporary life. In order to stimulate research and writing on this subject, I organized a panel on "Images of Women in Chinese Literature" for the New York Asian Conference of the AAS, October 12-13, 1984, at Cortland, New York.

This article seeks to demonstrate that an interest in female beauty was always pres- ent in the revolutionary process. The author analyzes how revolutionaries sus- tained that interest by employing self-beautification practices and women's beauty politically and how social interactions reinforced the perception that female beauty was rewarding, underscoring that Communists accepted the practice of self-adornment. After examining the revolutionary aesthetics of femininity developed by women activists, the article briefly explores the legacy offemale beauty in the Communist regime.

When I was searching the resources for my thesis Nora’s rewriting in China(1914-1948), by accident the website of Ibsen Center jumped out. Then I came to Norway and studied at Ibsen Center. Whether in Norway or in China, many people asked me why I had chosen Ibsen studies and had come to Norway. I always said because I liked Ibsen’s plays and Norway has an Ibsen Center. It turned out that I had chosen correctly. At the Ibsen Center, professors and students from all over the world gave me lots of chances to access different ideas and insights into Ibsen studies, especially from theatre and performance aspects. I could access the original Ibsen’s texts and understand Norwegian society in Ibsen’s times, and I could watch Ibsen’s performances from different countries either in the National Theatre or through DVDs in class. At the heart of Tina Lu’s provocatively but somewhat misleadingly titled Accidental Incest, Filial Cannibalism and Other Peculiar Encounters in Late Imperial Chinese Literature are interlinked questions about the changing views of empire, genre, social order, and self, during the transition from late Ming to the Qing. As she argues it, before the cultural shock wrought by the fall of the Ming, narrative structures took an optimistic view of the cosmic and imperial order. Within this world view, the loss of order was a temporary anomaly, and imperial subjects were as confident as theatre audiences that time would bring about a proper resolution to dramatic conflict with a new and improved establishment of order. After the fall of the Ming, however, faith in the totalizing imperial vision waned, and with it, a belief in the narrative promise of karmic retribution to return people to their proper social places and to reward the good and punish the bad. The main thread that links together the seven chapters of this ambitious monograph is the ongoing analysis of the intersections between chuanqi 傳奇 (dramas), huaben 話本 (short stories), xiaoshuo 小說 (novels) and the narrative vision of empire. Each chapter takes up, from different angles, questions about mapping, border crossings, exchange, narrative form, and predetermined fate. Traditional Chinese narratives are remarkable for the extent to which coincidences and doubling create a closed narrative world that seems structured by an almost mathematical logic or reciprocity.

Theme and objective of research The main scope of research of the present dissertation is the 20th-century development of modern Chinese drama, the huaju 话剧 and one of its representative dramatic pieces. In this historic period, China was subject to revolutionary changes (mostly enforced in the beginning), resulting in the substantial transformation of its society and culture. The wild enthusiasm that affected and saw these changes through created a nation-wide positive initiative, and thus promoted a substantive discourse on a series of important social and cultural issues. Changes by definition carry contradiction. Next to progress, there is always the difficulty of breaking away from the old and familiar, and the controversial state of mind that inevitably accompanies this process. The diverse manifestations of this duality that surface in the literary works of the era enrich them with a special complexity. An outstanding achievement of this period is the ’promotion’ of theatre. The art of traditional Chinese theatre is a unique, complex and invaluable cultural heritage, which, in spite of the temporary dominance of this 20th-century new form, thrives on. The modern dramatic art and play is a special direction of development in the history of Chinese drama that was the result of the impact Western dramatic traditions made on Chinese ones. This reform of theatre and drama was purely the demand of the time.
