  • Personalization of Political Newspaper Coverage: a Longitudinal Study in the Dutch Context Since 1950
Personalization of political newspaper coverage: a longitudinal study in the Dutch context since 1950 Ellis Aizenberg, Wouter van Atteveldt, Chantal van Son, Franz-Xaver Geiger VU University, Amsterdam This study analyses whether personalization in Dutch political newspaper coverage has increased since 1950. In spite of the assumption that personalization increased over time in The Netherlands, earlier studies on this phenomenon in the Dutch context led to a scattered image. Through automatic and manual content analyses and regression analyses this study shows that personalization did increase in The Netherlands during the last century, the changes toward that increase however, occurred earlier on than expected at first. This study also shows that the focus of reporting on politics is increasingly put on the politician as an individual, the coverage in which these politicians are mentioned however became more substantive and politically relevant. Keywords: Personalization, content analysis, political news coverage, individualization, privatization Introduction When personalization occurs a focus is put on politicians and party leaders as individuals. The context of the news coverage in which they are mentioned becomes more private as their love lives, upbringing, hobbies and characteristics of personal nature seem increasingly thoroughly discussed. An article published in 1984 in the Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf forms a good example here, where a horse race betting event, which is attended by several ministers accompanied by their wives and girlfriends is carefully discussed1. Nowadays personalization is a much-discussed phenomenon in the field of political communication. It can simply be seen as: ‘a process in which the political weight of the individual actor in the political process increases 1 Ererondje (17 juli 1984).

March 2011 THE STATE OF THE RIGHT: THE NETHERLANDS www.fondapol.org Niek PAS www.fondapol.org THE STATE OF THE RIGHT: THE NETHERLANDS Niek PAS The Fondation pour l’innovation politique is a liberal, progressive and European Think tank President: Nicolas Bazire Vice-president: Charles Beigbeder Chief Executive Officer: Dominique Reynié [email protected] SUMMARY Its diversity is what most characterises the Dutch right: it spans Christian democrats (Christian Democratic Appeal, CDA) and liberals (People’s Party for Freedom and Democracy, VVD), as well as populist parties, whose strength is quite unprecedented in Europe. Populist parties have increased their support significantly since the early 2000s. They have enjoyed real success, thanks in particular to Pim Fortuyn, whose pro- vocative style boosted their popularity before his assassination in May 2002. The radical and populist right is now embodied by Geert Wilders’s Party for Freedom (PVV). Founded in 2006, the PVV’s orientation is more nationalistic and less liberal than that of the Pim Fortuyn List; it is vehement in its opposition to Islam and immigration. The Netherlands also has many smaller political movements, including agrarian, natio- nalist and far-right parties. All these parties have relays in the media, both in the press and on the internet, and their ideas are formalised and disseminated by a variety of think tanks and journals. Despite this fragmentation, the Dutch right presents a united ideological front on many issues: with the exception of the Christian democrats, it is generally Eurosceptic and favours strengthening the nation, at a time when the country’s openness to the world is perceived as a threat rather than an opportunity.

Vote on AM 83 (Approved 358 in favour, 314 against, 5 abstained) This amendment changed the definition of driftnets to allow for semi-driftneting (when there is an anchor attached to the bottom of the net). Semi-driftnets are a major problem for the marine environment and by changing this definition, it doesn’t ban them from being used in particular in the Baltic and Mediterranean. Many marine species are bycaught in driftnets, including semi-driftnets. MEPs who voted in favour (+) of this amendment voted for the dilution of the definition and hence supported for increased number of marine species to drown in fishing gear (driftnets). 2. Vote on AM 295 (Not approved 175 in favour, 454 against, 43 abstained) This amendment set a quantifiable target that within 5 years, the bycatch of juvenile fish would be reduced by 50%.

  • Reader Studiereis Brussel GLB – POP
Uw expertise is hard nodig. Hoogwaardige mestfabrieken? Aardwarmterotondes? Een landelijke korte keten coöperatie ? Voedsel- en kookles op school ? Zelfproducerende consumenten? Een verplichte voedselstrategie voor gemeenten? En hoe pakken we dat aan? Waar halen we de kennis? Welke rol heeft overheid dan? Laat uw verbeelding de vrije loop.
