  • Letter to the Commission Regarding Printers Voluntary Agreement
Brussels, Wednesday 26th of May To: Mr Virginijus Sinkevičius, European Commissioner for Environment, Oceans and Fisheries Mr Thierry Breton, European Commissioner for the Internal Market Mr Frans Timmermans, European Commission Executive Vice-President for the European Green Deal We urge the European Commission to keep its promises and propose a regulatory measure addressing the durability and repairability of printers as well as the reusability of cartridges as part of the forthcoming Circular Electronics Initiative. And we ask that the Commission rejects the proposed voluntary agreement drafted by manufacturers. The Commission's flagship Circular Economy Action Plan, adopted in March 2020, has set out to address the entire life cycle of products and tackle their premature obsolescence notably by promoting the right to repair for ICT products. In addition to mobile phones, laptops and tablets, the Plan has rightfully identified printers as a particularly wasteful product category, and has included a commitment to tackle them by means of a dedicated regulatory instrument “unless the sector reaches an ambitious voluntary agreement” by September 2020. Nearly one year later, the discussions on the voluntary agreement have not yielded any tangible results. Voluntary approaches clearly do not work. We need strong regulatory action now. We are extremely concerned by this situation. Not only because of the negative impacts of short-lived printers on the environment and on consumers but also because we are witnessing promises made being walked back on. Printers are one of the most iconic examples of premature obsolescence. Our analysis of printers in use today suggests that over 80% of them have been in use for less than 3 years, and only about 4% have been in use for 5 years or longer.

  • Europee, Pd: Per Ogni Euro Speso in Sicurezza Investire 1 Euro in Cultura

  • Time for the European Commission to Legislate on Collective Redress
Mr Jean-Claude Juncker President of the Commission Mrs Vera Jourová Commissioner The Consumer Voice in Europe European Commission Rue de la Loi 200 B – 1049 Brussels Ref.: BEUC-X-2017-107 10 October 2017 Subject: Time for the European Commission to legislate on collective redress Dear President Juncker, Dear Commissioner Jourová, I write on behalf of BEUC, The European Consumer Organisation, to ask you to propose a binding legislative measure on collective redress. Consumer rights at EU level have come a long way over the last 20 years. However, the inability of consumers to band together to claim their rights when they have suffered detriment is one of the missing pieces of the jigsaw for EU consumers to access justice. As you are aware, Volkswagen has steadfastly refused to compensate consumers in Europe affected by the emissions scandal. This is in stark contrast to their response in the United States, where the threat of class action has proved decisive in delivering compensation for affected consumers. In your State of the Union speech a few days ago, you said that you are “shocked when consumers are knowingly and deliberately misled” and that you “call on the car industry to come clean and make it right”. We know that despite Commissioner Jourova’s efforts, which we appreciate, the company still refuses to put things right. Since the scandal broke over two years ago, VW remains adamant it will not compensate European car owners. It is now in your hands to decide whether in the future European consumers who have been victims of fraud on a large scale, or who have suffered from a trader’s unfair or illegal practices, should have a realistic chance to be compensated.

  • Lettera Sassoli Chiusura Parlamento IT.Pages

The undersigned, former Members of the European Parliament, call on the Members of the European Parliament who are to take part in this vote, to vote against this proposal and therefore in favour of protecting the immunity of their colleagues Mr. Puigdemont, Mr. Comín and Ms. Ponsatí. First, because the court that requests the waiver of their immunity, the Spanish Supreme Court, is not the competent authority to make the request, as it was argued before the JURI Committee, and neither is it an impartial court, as recently established by the Belgian justice, since the Brussels Court of Appeals found that Lluís Puig, former Minister of the Catalan Government in exile, could not be impartially judged by this Spanish Court. Second, there is evidence that these three Members of the European Parliament are suffering political persecution. This political persecution is based on evidence, such as the judicial obstacles to prevent them from running in the European elections, the presence of up to five Spanish MEPs on the JURI Committee and their public statements on the report before, during, and after the vote; the inclusion of wrong charges in the report of Clara Ponsatí; or the leaking of the report before the vote to a far-right newspaper in Spain.
