  • Bolivia Coca Cultivation Survey June 2007
Government of Bolivia Bolivia Coca Cultivation Survey June 2007 Bolivia Coca Survey for 2006 PREFACE The evidence from the 2006 Bolivia Coca Survey sends mixed signals. Overall, there is an 8% increase in cultivation over 2005 for a total of 27,500 hectares. Dire forecasts have not been borne out. Nevertheless, there are warning signs that should be heeded. Under Bolivian law, 12,000 hectares may be grown for traditional consumption or other legal uses: this Survey shows that the limit was exceeded in the Yungas of La Paz where most of the cultivation usually takes place. At the same time there has been a dramatic (19%) increase in the Chapare region, including more than 2,300 hectares of coca being grown in national parks in the Tropics of Cochabamba – a threat to the precious eco-system of the Amazon forests. The good news from this same region is that the amount of land devoted to the cultivation of alternative crops – such as bananas, pineapple, and palm heart – now exceeds the area used to grow coca. There are signs of hope that licit crops can help liberate vulnerable communities from poverty. Nevertheless, the considerable increase in seizures and the displacement of drug production to areas outside the coca growing areas, as reported by the Bolivian drug control police, demonstrates the need for sustained drug law enforcement of the Bolivian Government. Bolivia’s drug policy is in the spotlight. The Government needs to reassure the world that its support for coca growers will not lead to an increase in cocaine production.

Boeck, MD, MPH, José Luis Gallardo Barrientos, MD, FACS, José Luis Hidalgo López, MD, Irene B. Helenowski, PhD, Benedict C. Nwomeh, MD, MPH, Michael B. Shapiro, MD, Mamta Swaroop, MD, FACS Chicago, Illinois; New York, New York; Boston, Massachusetts; Potosí, Bolivia; and Columbus, Ohio Abstract BACKGROUND Scaling up surgical and trauma care in low- and middle-income countries could prevent nearly 2 million annual deaths. Various survey instruments exist to measure surgical and trauma capacity, including Personnel, Infrastructure, Procedures, Equipment, and Supplies (PIPES) and Interna- tional Assessment of Capacity for Trauma (INTACT). OBJECTIVE We sought to evaluate surgical and trauma capacity in the Bolivian department of Potosí using a combined PIPES and INTACT tool, with additional questions to further inform intervention targets. METHODS In June and July 2014 a combined PIPES and INTACT survey was administered to 20 gov- ernment facilities in Potosí with a minimum of 1 operating room: 2 third-level, 10 second-level, and 8 first-level facilities. A surgeon, head physician, director, or obstetrician-gynecologist completed the survey. Additional personnel responded to 4 short-answer questions. Survey items were divided into subsections, and PIPES and INTACT indices calculated. Medians were compared via Wilcoxon rank sum and Kruskal-Wallis tests.

  • Style Architecture of Cusco, Peru
ABSTRACT Title of Thesis: Slithering Serpents and the Afterlives of Stones: The Role of Ornament in Inka- Style Architecture of Cusco, Peru Lisa Senchyshyn Trever, Master of Arts, 2005 Directed By: Professor Joanne Pillsbury Department of Art History and Archaeology Serpent reliefs and other pre-Hispanic motifs occasionally appear on the façades of early colonial Inka-style masonry buildings in Cusco, the former capital of the Inka empire, although similar carvings are only rarely seen on earlier Inka architecture. This research demonstrates that while some ashlars were reused from pre-Hispanic Inka walls, the reliefs were likely carved during the colonial era. Central to this analysis is the premise that the breakdown of Inka state iconoclasm allowed native masons greater decorative license. The appearance of Andean motifs on houses built for the city’s Spanish inhabitants reveals the complexity of early colonial attitudes toward indigenous culture. The carvings provide an opportunity to investigate the shifting meanings of Andean symbols during the early years of the Spanish presence in Peru. Indeed, these motifs, carved after the Inka imperial collapse, have since become iconic of “Inka-ness” and are replicated in Cusco’s twentieth-century municipal architecture. SLITHERING SERPENTS AND THE AFTERLIVES OF STONES: THE ROLE OF ORNAMENT IN INKA-STYLE ARCHITECTURE OF CUSCO, PERU By Lisa Senchyshyn Trever Thesis submitted to the Faculty of the Graduate School of the University of Maryland, College Park, in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts 2005 Advisory Committee: Professor Joanne Pillsbury, Chair Professor Sally M. While the most advanced technological means to photograph and reproduce this document have been used, the quality is heavily dependent upon the quality of the original submitted. The following explanation of techniques is provided to help you understand markings or patterns which may appear on this reproduction. 1.The sign or "target" for pages apparently lacking from the document photographed is "Missing Page(s)". If it was possible to obtain the missing page(s) or section, they are spliced into the film along with adjacent pages. This may have necessitated cutting thru an image and duplicating adjacent pages to insure you complete continuity. 2. When an image on the film is obliterated with a targe round black mark, it is an indication that the photographer suspected that the copy may have moved during exposure and thus cause a blurred image.

Modern Editions of Colonial Spanish Sources for Indian Ethnohistory at the Newberry Library edited by Andrew Friedman Contained within is a bibliography of post-colonial editions of colonial-era, Spanish-language primary sources. Within each chapter, sources are sorted according to their country of publication. For instance, a modern printing of a source about the Quiché Maya of Guatemala, published in Mexico City, would be located under the Mexico heading of the Guatemala chapter within the Central America section. Decadent Wealth, Degenerate Morality, Dominance, and Devotion: The Discordant Iconicity of the Rich Mountain of Potosí Dissertation Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of The Ohio State University By Claudia A. Cornejo Happel, M.A. Graduate Program in Spanish and Portuguese The Ohio State University 2014 Dissertation Committee: Lisa Voigt, Advisor Lúcia Costigán Elizabeth Davis Copyright by Claudia A. Cornejo Happel 2014 Abstract The rich mountain of Potosí, with its famed silver mines, has commanded the attention of Europeans, creoles (Americans of Spanish descent), and indigenous Andeans since the Spanish colonizers of Peru were made aware of its existence in 1545. Soon after its discovery, the rich mountain was represented in a variety of written and visual texts created by writers and artists from the Andes, Spain, and other parts of Europe. Independent of its physical form, in these representations the rich mountain assumed a discursive meaning, functioning as an icon that, depending on the context, represented abstract ideas of wealth, immorality, dominance, and spirituality. This dissertation brings together texts, images, and maps to discuss the multifaceted iconicity of Potosí and its cultural salience in these representations. Besides functioning as an icon that supported Spain’s “official history,” a discourse that presented Spanish achievements as heroic and providential, other representations of the rich mountain supported alternative discourses regarding Spanish colonial history. To advance individual and nationalistic agendas, authors, artists, and mapmakers strove to control the meaning associated with the iconic rich mountain. My dissertation shows that for an early modern audience the mountain of Potosí was more than just a source of silver; it was also an icon that contributed to discourses negotiating issues of economy, morality, spatial and political dominance, and spiritual expression.

In its present form it is a nearly exhaustive guide to the published literature on the mineral resources, economic geology and areal geology of Bolivia. References pertaining to mineralogy, geochemistry, geophysics, stratigraphy, structural geology, and tectonics that are relevant to a study of Bolivian mineral resources are also included. An attempt has been made to include as much unpublished literature as possible, such a theses and company reports, but the compila tion of these is known to be incomplete. A number of references concerning the economic geology of south east Peru and northwest Argentina have been included as these areas contain the northern and southern extensions of the Bolivian metalliferous belts.
