    Lindholm, Belonging and popular culture InterDisciplines 1 (2018) Belonging and popular culture The work of Chilean artist Ana Tijoux Susan Lindholm Introduction Current public debates on migration in the Global North often focus on issues of integration and multiculturalism, that is, questions surrounding the reassertion of national identity and definitions of the nation-state. In these debates, the figure of the embodied and imagined migrant can be seen as one that serves to condense »concerns with race, space and time and the politics of belonging« (Westwood and Phizacklea 2000, 3). How- ever, these public debates tend to pay less attention to the experience of individual migrants and groups who move across national borders and the structural preconditions based on social issues such as race, culture, and gender they encounter and negotiate. In order to be able to discuss and theoretically frame such experiences, researchers have suggested moving beyond methodological nationalism by, for instance, identifying and analyzing different spaces in which individuals identified as the cultural or racial »Other« express experiences of marginalization and exclusion (Westwood and Phizacklea 2000; Anthias 2008; Amelina et al. 2012; Nowicka and Cieslik 2014; Vasilev 2018). While hip-hop culture is often described as a platform through which marginalized youths are able to make such experiences of social exclusion visible, it is also a highly gendered space that, in its mainstream version, is filled with expressions of hypermasculinity and misogyny (Kumpf 2013, 207; Sernhede and Söderman 2010, 51). Such dominance of masculine- coded expressions, in turn, contributes to the marginalization of female and queer artists in mainstream hip-hop culture (Rose 2008; Pough 2007).

    Excerpt * Temple University Press 1 La Nueva Canción and Its Significance uring the 1960s and 1970s, profound political changes were taking place in Chile and in other parts of Latin America. New political Dand social movements of students, workers, peasants, urban shanty- town dwellers, and other groups mobilized to demand rights and political inclusion along with deeper democratization and structural changes in elit- ist systems. The 1960s were marked by the Cuban Revolution and the war in Vietnam, and many young people in Chile, as in other countries, were strongly anti-imperialist and in favor of progressive social change. These popular movements coalesced to form a powerful force that was instrumen- tal in electing the democratic socialist Salvador Allende president in 1970. Allende’s goal was to preside over a peaceful, constitutional path to social- ism in Chile. He served for three turbulent years, attempting to implement a program to reduce social inequalities, until he was overthrown in the U.S.- backed military coup of 1973. Political and Social Context In Chile in the early 1960s, social divisions were severe. Some 25 percent of the population had access to sewage services, and only 10–11 percent of rural populations had supplied drinking water. In 1960, 16.4 percent of the population was illiterate.1 Tens of thousands of people had built crude, leaky shacks to live in on the outskirts of Santiago that lacked plumbing, run- ning water, and electricity.     Reseñas de Fonogramas / Revista Musical Chilena Christian Spencer ha mantenido por muchos años un trabajo acerca de la investigación, la interpretación y la creación de nuevos significados y símbolos de representación cultural, al que se suma al esfuerzo de generaciones de músicos que incorporan a su estética la poética latinoameri- cana para integrar de esta forma nuestras culturas. A este respecto es necesario destacar la actual figura del músico venezolano Jorge Ball Vargas. A su brillante carrera de intérprete en cuatro en nuestro país se agrega la de ser un pedagogo en este instrumento. Su experiencia como intérprete la complementa con sus conocimientos como maestro luthier, los que difunde y desarrolla median- te la didáctica de la lutería para las nuevas generaciones. Es importante señalar que el cuatro que interpreta y acompaña en este disco a Christian Spencer fue fabricado por Jorge Ball. En este sentido se destaca además la cantautora chilena Elizabeth Morris. Ella, al igual que Spencer, rinde homenaje al joropo venezolano y especialmente al joropo llamado “Pajarillo”, tan popular en el cancionero venezolano, en su producción discográfica titulada “Pájaros” del año 2012. El grupo Quilapayún aportó también a fines de la década del 60 una pieza fundamental en el cancionero latinoamericano. Se trata de la obra La muralla, una composición en la que el cuatro y el ritmo de joropo venezolano son protagónicos, dando vida y alma al texto del poeta cubano Nicolás Guillén. Es complejo y variopinto el aporte que el cuatro ha realizado en la música de raíz folclórica chilena, tanto en la obra de los creadores como en el desarrollo instrumental de los solistas y de los grupos emblemáticos de nuestro país, Los de Ramón, Inti Illimani, Rolando Alarcón, Silvia Urbina, Illapu, Patricio Manns, Los Jaivas, Isabel Parra, Congreso, Ortiga, Aparcoa, Huamarí, Ángel Parra, Barroco Andino, por citar solo algunos de los que han sido seducidos en estos últimos cincuenta años por la magia de este maravilloso cordófono venezolano.

Cantautora nacida en Lima, aunque criada en Ica, muy joven se hizo conocida por su gran interpretación vocal. Amante de la voz de Jesús Vásquez, fue alumna y posteriormente colaboradora de Oscar Avilés. Alicia Maguiña forma parte de esa nueva generación de músicos criollos que se dan a conocer en la década del 50 y que van a introducir el cajón y marcados elementos afroperuanos en el vals criollo. Alicia también tuvo un fuerte interés por la música andina y asistía a los conciertos folclóricos que se realizaban en los coliseos.     JOMEC Journal Journalism, Media and Cultural Studies Published by Cardiff University Press Songs of Exile: Music, Activism, and Solidarity in the Latin American Diaspora Claudia Bucciferro Gonzaga University Email: [email protected] Keywords Music Latin America Activism Exile Diasporic communities Abstract This article addresses the long-standing connection between music and social activism in Latin America, centering on a discussion of ‘the music of exile’ as a cultural artifact of historical and conceptual significance for diasporic Latin American communities. The music produced by artists who were persecuted during the years of military rule was characterized by an engagement with social and political affairs, and often helped bring people together in the struggle for democratization. Despite censorship laws and other repressive measures enacted by the dictatorships, the music not only endured but traveled across nations and continents, carried by the millions of people who were displaced due to State-sponsored violence. Now distributed through new media platforms, such as YouTube, this music functions as a repository of memory and an emblem of solidarity that connects dispersed Latin American communities. Using Cultural Studies as a theoretical framework and employing an interpretive methodology, this study focuses on a selection of songs written between 1963 and 1992, presenting an analysis that centers on their lyrics and connects their meanings to larger social processes.
