It is my hope that you find this study and its results edifying and useful towards a victorious struggle. i Abstract This dissertation concerns how Jewish-Muslim and Israel-Palestine grassroots activism can persist in the face of threats to the safety, freedom, lives, or even simply the income and employment of those engaged in acts of sustained resistance. At the heart of the study are the experiences of participants in the Hashlamah Project, an interreligious collaboration project involving Jews and Muslims. Across chapters and even nations, chapters of this organization faced similar threats and found universally applicable solutions emerging for confronting those threats and persisting in the face of them. This raised the question of whether revolutionaries and activists in general can persevere with such work in the face of this sort of menacing. The study found answers to this in determining what methods were most widely employed and which had the best results. The results of the study showed an array of widely employed methods for navigating threats in high-risk activism and persevering with such work in the face of these threats.     1 A Recipe for Social Change: Indirect Minority Influence and Cognitive Rebalancing Jiin Jung1 and Aaron Bramson2 1 Department of Psychology, Claremont Graduate University 2 Laboratory for Symbolic Cognitive Development, Riken Brain Science Institute Abstract. The present paper proposes an agent-based model of indirect minority influence to examine a theoretical assumption that indirect minority influence leads to social change as a function of cognitive rebalancing. An attitude updating algorithm was constructed with minimal assumptions based on social psychological theories on indirect minority influence processes. Simulation results reveal that in the face of direct majority influence, indirect minority influence in combination with cognitive rebalancing is a recipe for social change. We discuss the findings in terms of the social influence literature and suggest some promising avenues for modeling extensions for theory building in minority influence and social change. Keywords: indirect minority influence, cognitive rebalancing, social change, agent-based modeling 1 Introduction Minority influence on social change has been a major topic of social psychology over the past half century (Prislin & Crano, 2012). Early researchers viewed minority dissents as frequent catalysts of social change (Moscovici, 1976),and typically assumed that if minority dissents successfully influence the majority’s attitude in favor of a minority position, this can potentially change the societal norm. Social change refers to the process whereby a society adopts a new belief, attitude, or idea which eventually becomes accepted as a norm. Although by definition social change is a societal-level phenomenon, social psychologists often reduce it to an individual level and then measure individuals’ attitude change, or to a small interactive group level and measure the small groups’ decision in favor of an initial minority position as a proxy of social change (Levine & Tindale, 2015).

It questions the assumption of a single function made in formal models of social influence and proposes instead that the function will vary depending on which social influence process predominates. It is argued that normative influence is likely to be stronger when participants make public responses and are face-to-face with the majority, whereas informational influence is likely to be stronger when participants make private responses and communicate with the majority indirectly.

Ireland is, indeed, a small place, and it has seen great fanaticism and hatred, although the temperature of Ireland as a whole has subsided dramatically since the Good Friday Agreement of 1998, despite Boris Johnson. The whole island of Ireland today occupies 32,599 square miles. British-administered Northern Ireland includes 5,340 of those square miles. Combined Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland approximate the size of Indiana. The total population of the island of Ireland is 6.7 million people, about a half a million more than the population of Indiana. There is another place of “great hatred, little room” that I wish to discuss this evening: the Holy Land, made up today of the State of Israel and the Palestinian autonomous regions of the West Bank and the Gaza Strip.

    CHAPTER ONE THEORETICAL CONSIDERATIONS AND HISTORICAL CONTEXT The study of emigration of Jews from Arab countries to Israel has largely been motivated by sectarianism and political partisanship. Authors with Zionist inclinations tend to see this emigration as the result of Muslim persecution of Jews, while at the same time viewing the process of aliyah to Israel as a redemption. According to this narrative, Jews in Arab coun- tries lived in an almost constant state of longing for Zion. Messianic impulses, coupled with constant persecution, drove Jews to immigrate to Israel as soon as they had the opportunity to do so.1 Recently, this narrative has been appropriated by those wishing to attribute refugee status to Jews from Arab countries. Several organizations have been formed to advocate for restitutions for those Jews, individually or as communities, who left or lost property and assets in Arab countries.2 One author, Yaʿakov Meron, goes as far as to call this emigration an expul- sion, yet as he points out regarding Yemen: “A bribe from the American Joint Distribution Committee to Yemen’s ruler, Imam Ahmed ibn Yahya, led to his agreeing to the mass exodus of Jews to Israel in 1949–1950…”3 1 On messianism see Eraqi-Klorman, Jews of Yemen in the Nineteenth Century, 90–119; Ahroni, Yemenite Jewry; Parfitt, Road to Redemption. Jews have lived with Muslims in Muslim countries for centuries without any serious problem. 3. On the other hand in Europe, Jews were persecuted. Every now and again there would be pogroms when the Europeans would massacre Jews. The Holocaust did not happen in Muslim countries. Muslims may discriminate against Jews but did not massacre them. 4. But now you are fighting the largely Muslim Palestinians. It cannot be because of religious differences or the killing of Jews living among them. It must be because you have taken their land and expelled them from their homeland. It is therefore not a religious war. But of course as you seek sympathisers from among the non-Muslims, the Palestinians seek sympathisers among the Muslims. That still does not make the war a religious war. 5. Whether you speak Hebrew or not is not relevant. Lots of people who are not English speak English. They don't belong to England. For centuries you could speak Hebrew but remained Germans, British, French, Russians etc. 6. Lots of Jews cannot speak Hebrew but they are still Jews.     Historical Memory and History in the Memoirs of Iraqi Jews* Mark R. Cohen Memoirs, History, and Historical Memory Following their departure en masse from their homeland in the middle years of the twentieth century, Jews from Iraq produced a small library of memoirs, in English, French, Hebrew, and Arabic. These works reveal much about the place of Arab Jews in that Muslim society, their role in public life, their relations with Muslims, their involvement in Arab culture, the crises that led to their departure from a country in which they had lived for centuries, and, finally, their life in the lands of their dispersion. The memoirs are complemented by some documentary films. The written sources have aroused the interest of historians and scholars of literature, though not much attention has been paid to them as artifacts of historical memory.1 That is the subject of the present essay.
