Podere Orto , Set deep within an unspoiled patch of land 600 meters up, at the edge of Lazio, next to and Toscana, sits Podere Orto. From ancient Etruscan settlements to the old aristocrats who once owned the Castle of Trevinano, to the Popes and then the Bourbons, the area is steeped in centuries of history reinforced in contemporary times by the surrounding expansive natural reserve of Monte Rufeno. With its location suspended in time by both historical importance and reverence of nature, these two factors have become the focal point in how they treat their vineyards: they eschew all chemicals in the vineyard, preferring biodynamic principles and allowing the rich clay, calcareous and sandstone marl to absorb the prepara- tions to sustain their vines. Their goal is simple: to express the natural state of their environment within each bottle. Their vines were planted in 2009 - on rich clay, calcareous and sandstone marl mix with quartz granules – are Sangiovese and Ciliegiolo culled using massale selection, are hand harvested and undergo spontaneous fermentation with no added treat- ments and are always unfiltered.
