Leading Learning Forward Teaching School Alliance ”Improving the attainment of every learner” School Direct 2015-16 Initial Teacher Training Leading Learning Forward Teaching School Alliance is a partnership of North Lincolnshire schools, across all phases, primary, secondary and special, that have come together to share skills, experience, talent and capacity to help improve the learning and achievement of young people across North Lincolnshire. SCHOOL DIRECT is a one year full-time programme based in one of our partnership schools. Our programmes last for one academic year (September - June), during which time you will undertake high quality school placements within our Teaching School Alliance. You will also enjoy a bespoke programme of training developed and delivered by our Alliance Schools and University partners. Our ITT programmes have been designed to build your confidence and subject knowledge and give you the necessary skills to become an effective classroom practitioner. For successful trainees there is likely to be a teaching post available within the partnership of schools subject to available vacancies. Leading Learning Forward Teaching School Alliance is looking to recruit up to 23 high quality School Direct candidates across our lead schools for the 2015 - 16 academic year. The following School Direct places are available via: Primary: Lead School - St Hugh’s Communication & Interaction Specialist College – 6 places in total Provider: North Lincolnshire SCITT Partnership and Bishop Grosseteste University Secondary: Lead School - South Axholme Academy (working in partnership with The St Lawrence Academy) Provider: North Lincolnshire SCITT Partnership and Bishop Grosseteste University 7 places in total for the following subjects: • English • Maths • History • Physics • Modern Languages • Physical Education • Dance North Lincolnshire Education Consortium (NLEC): Lead School - The Axholme Academy Provider: University of Hull 10 places in total for the following subjects: • Maths (6 places) • English (2 places) • Physics (1 place) • Physics with Maths (1 place) Entry Requirements: Primary • A UK Undergraduate honours degree - your degree should be a 2.1 or higher if possible; those with a 2.2 degree will be considered or a recognised equivalent qualification at 2.2 or above* • GCSE Grade Cs or above in English, Mathematics and Science (or equivalent) plus other GCSE subjects and preferably ‘A’ levels Secondary • South Axholme Academy places - A UK Undergraduate honours degree - your degree should be a 2.1 or higher if possible; those with 2.2 degrees will be considered or a recognised equivalent qualification at 2.2 or above* • NLEC places: A UK Undergraduate honours degree - your degree should be a 2.2 or higher if possible; or a recognised equivalent qualification at 2.2 or above* For secondary applicants, the degree should normally be in the subject that you are applying to train in. It is important that you have a strong understanding of the subject you wish to teach however, if your degree subject does not link closely with the teaching subject, you may be eligible for a subject knowledge enhancement course and this would be discussed with you on receipt of your application. • GCSE Grade Cs or above in English and Mathematics (or equivalent) plus other GCSE subjects and preferably ‘A’ levels *Overseas trained teachers will need to provide evidence of their qualifications and that their qualifications are at the same level as UK qualifications. This information can be found via NARIC. All applicants also need to: • Have successfully completed the National College for Teaching and Learning (NCTL) Professional Skills’ tests in Literacy and Numeracy. Information regarding this can be found at: http://www.education.gov.uk/get-into-teaching/apply-for-teacher-training/skills-tests We advise that you book the skills tests as soon as you have submitted your application via UCAS. You should aim to pass these tests as soon as possible to give yourself the best chance of securing a place on the programme. Skills tests need to be in place before 30 June 2015 • Completed a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) declaration regarding any criminal convictions, regarding your suitability to work with young people and a fitness to teach declaration • Demonstrate a passion for working with young people, not just a passion for your subject(s) • Have relevant, recent experience of being in at least one school setting either in a paid or voluntary capacity along with evidence of why teaching is for them. • Demonstrate your reading and communication skills in written and spoken Standard English • Have not failed or withdrawn from a previous ITT programme unless there are exceptional circumstances Course details: St Hugh’s Communication & Interaction Specialist College & South Axholme Academy: We have developed an exciting & innovative ITT programme in partnership with the North Lincolnshire SCITT Partnership and Bishop Grosseteste University, Lincoln. On completion of training you will be awarded a full Post-Graduate Certificate in Education (PCGE) as well as the award of QTS and our programmes are assessed at Masters (M) Level. The lead schools’ offer a full-time 1 year programme which runs from September 1st until the end of the following academic year. You will experience two significant block placements in contrasting schools, with placements and visits to other Alliance schools including special schools and schools from a different phase to the one in which you aim to teach. Under the guidance of the North Lincolnshire SCITT Partnership, the course begins with an Induction programme which involves both central and school-based training. During this period, the partnership carries out an initial needs analysis for each trainee. This is then used to create an individualised and bespoke pathway. The main components of the programme are: • School based subject and pedagogical development • Cross-phase professional studies • Regular observations and tutorial support • PGCE module tutorials and study support Partnership and School-based training: Partnership Training is usually delivered at North Lincolnshire’s Learning Development Centre, making extensive use of expert teachers, lead practitioners and specialist consultants. These sessions are usually delivered in a ‘workshop’ style and are designed to provide a practical insight into the effectiveness of techniques and strategies utilised by the best classroom practitioners. They also provide an opportunity to promote trainee networking and offer regular reflection of trainee experiences in school. Placements and visits to other Alliance schools including special schools and schools from a different phase to the one in which you aim to teach are also included, including bespoke SEN placements. School-based training: This vital aspect of training complements that which is delivered by the partnership. It includes: • Observation of good and best teaching practice • Collaborative planning • Weekly professional development meetings with School-based trainers • Shadowing individual pupils, groups and whole classes • Learning from and alongside phase/subject specialists • Teaching and evaluating sequences of lessons • Undertaking action and theoretical research for PGCE units (level 7) Teaching and Pedagogical development: Following induction, you will begin to teach groups and whole classes up to but no more than 20% of a four-day teaching week. In the second part of Autumn Term, your teaching commitment is increased to 40% with a further increase in mid-Spring Term of 60%. This then increases to 80% in the Summer Term over five-days. The remaining time within the week is devoted to observation of good practice, targeted work with groups of learners and school- based research to deepen your knowledge of how children learn and progress. Assessment: The assessment process is on-going throughout the programme. This allows you to be given support and training appropriate to your individual needs. By the end of the programme, you must demonstrate your achievement in relation to the Teachers’ Standards via the North Lincolnshire SCITT Partnerships’ e-portfolio system. Mentoring and Support: You will have a subject/phase school-based trainer who is a teacher in your placement school/s. They will ensure that you access training which fully complements and supports training sessions, concentrating on appropriate subject/phase knowledge. In addition, you will have a tutor from within North Lincolnshire SCITT Partnership with phase/subject specialist knowledge who will visit you in school to observe and review your progress, working closely with the school-based trainer.
