Fraserburgh FC Official Matchday Programme

Due to the festivities this is a double programme and it gives me great pleasure to welcome the supporters, players, management and officials of Cove Rangers and Clachnacuddin to Bellslea Park over the two weekends. If you are at the Cove game, then you are taking part in a historical moment as this is the first competitive game the Broch have played on a Sunday. I have checked my records and as far as I know this is the first ever Sunday match. We have had numerous friendly matches on Sunday’s but never a competitive one.

Our last two games haven’t been the best as far as results go boardroom “that’s why we’re champions” after an injury but it is hardly the crisis that some might have you believe. Yes, time equaliser. I am certain had it been an earlier goal then the Keith match was disappointing and despite having plenty of it wouldn’t have happened but that isn’t the point. It was attacks we couldn’t seem to get our shots on target. You have horrific to witness and I lost all respect for a few guys that days like that but you have to credit Keith for the way they night. My granny always said to treat people how you defended and took the opportunities that were presented to wanted to be treated yourself and you can’t go far wrong. them. The Brora match was different in that we were well Coming from New Pitsligo she was never short of a few beaten by a very good side. They were extremely professional in words but they were always worth listening to. the way they played and were clinical in their finishing. A six nil defeat would suggest defensive shambles but that really wasn’t The two opposing Chairman over the festive period, Keith the case. I don’t think they had many more chances than they Moorhouse and Dennis Bridgeford along with Eddie Innes and scored with but that is in no way trying to suggest we were Sandy Stables are my closest friends in Highland League unlucky. They looked really impressive and if they play like that football and we are all passionate supporters of our clubs. for the remainder of the season they will in all probability win We wouldn’t be involved if we weren’t and we all feel it the league. when things aren’t going our way on the park. I turned to these guys a lot during my presidency of the league and am Once thing I will say is that the way Brora handled themselves in enjoying my first Christmas for three years without the victory was very refreshing. Back to that professional word pressure of that but I would like to take this opportunity to again, that is what they were. I have no problem with teams thank them for their support. I hope I am able to give them celebrating wildly when they win as that is part of the the same in return. enjoyment but it has to be done with a degree of respectability for the opposition. All teams, us included, have been guilty of I would like to finish by thanking all our fans, sponsors, over celebrating at some point as football is a passionate game advertisers and volunteers for their continued support over and it is easy to get caught up in the moment but once you are the past twelve months and hope that 2016 is a successful showered and out of the dressing room that’s where it should year for all of us. end. I feel I must point you, dear reader, in the direction of a fairly new ‘ Managers: Their Part In My Downfall’ – another superb magazine which, in my humble opinion, is a MUST for all article this time by the editor himself on how various Scotland

Entitled ‘Scotland: Epistles, Bullshit and Thistles’ managers unwittingly shaped his footballing life going from the the magazine for Autumn 2015 is Issue 3 and I have to say every manager of Scotland when he first saw them, Tommy Docherty mag so far has been nothing short of superb as Scotland fans through to the fair-haired one now in charge. Match Report Vs keith

Press & Journal Scottish Highland Football League, Saturday 12th December 2015, Fraserburgh v Keith, Bellslea Park, Fraserburgh

The Broch almost took an early lead as Dean Cowie’s free kick was played into the penalty box and Willie West got ahead of his marker but could only head straight at Daniel Bell. Keith took the lead after 5 minutes after a short backpass by Russell McBride let Michael Ewen through on goal, his effort was saved by Paul Leask but the striker reacted quickly to set up Donald Fraser who fired home from 12 yards. The Broch responded with a Dean Cowie free kick from the left which went just over the bar.

Steven Davidson had a great chance on 18 minutes when he raced clear of the Keith defence but he shot tamely past the post from the edge of the box. Marc Lawrence then won the ball in midfield and played Davidson in on the right side of the penalty area and his shot went across the face of goal and just past the post.

Michael Rae almost equalized in bizarre fashion as the Keith defenders and keeper got in a fankle and the ball cannoned against the Broch midfielder but went wide of goal.

On 34 minutes good play by Lawrence who set up Ryan Cowie and his cross was met by West but his shot was saved by Bell. A minute later the Broch appealed for a penalty as Lawrence was tripped in the box by the referee waved away the appeals.

Ryan Cowie then played a corner to the back post which Davidson returned into the middle but West’s effort went over. Keith almost got a second on 37 minutes when Ewen set up Kris Duncan but his shot was saved by Leask. On 42 minutes the visitors extended their lead when a harmless looking effort by Ryan Spink was collected inside the box by Fraser and he had space and time to slide the ball past Leask

Half Time: Fraserburgh 0 Keith 2

The second half was only two minutes old when Keith extended their lead as Ewen raced down the right wing cut into the box and fired the ball past Leask into the bottom corner to make it 3-0.

The Broch tried to get back into the game and Ryan Cowie’s free kick almost created a chance for West but the shot was blocked.

Marc Dickson then got down the right for the Broch and crossed into the box but West headed over from a good position. Another great run and cross by marc Dickson found Aidan Combe in the box and he laid the ball off to Ryan Cowie but his effort was blazed wide by the full back.

West then tried to get the Broch into the game as he broke into the box but his shot was blocked for a corner. At the other end a through ball to Ewen saw the Keith striker bear down on goal but Leask did well to save with his legs.

West thought he had pulled one back as a cross found him at the back post and he looped a header over Bell into the net but the referee’s assistant flagged for offside.

The Broch had one last chance for a consolation as West wriggled free of his marker but Bell saved his shot.

Th e calendar year of 2015 has been eventful to say the least. There are other words I could use but we will stick with eventful.

It seemed like every day for the first four months we were being told by some person or other who claimed to be “in the know” that our manager was leaving to go to Formartine United. It was very disruptive off the field especially given we had to constantly deny these rumours but as it turns out they were true. Or if not exactly true then the end result was the same.

These things happen in football, managers come and go and people have to accept that. We have moved on and so has Kris and Formartine United. We are more than happy with how things are going and while it wasn’t a good period in time, the club are stronger for the experience. It is pointless looking backwards but by the same token you have to learn from the past.

The most disappointing thing in that period was the way we went out of the League Cup losing 2-1 to Wick Academy at Bellslea. I thought we had a decent chance of doing well in the tournament but losing a game we should have had dead and buried was annoying.

Mark Cowie was appointed as our new manager and the opening spell of his reign was nothing short of shambolic. He was itching to get going and into his new role but it took us seven weeks to play two league games and we were th punished financially for something that wasn’t our fault. Having to wait until 9 May to play Fort William was a joke. Seven weeks wages for two games.

We have ground staff who take pride in the condition of Bellslea Park and that coupled with the climate means there are very few games off here at the Broch. The result of that is we end up playing a stack of away games at the end of the season all of which have been postponed earlier. We need a fair balance as it is difficult to pay wages when there is no income. The argument is we play everybody home and away but when you have five free Saturday’s out of seven I’m afraid to say that the argument is lost. I would be willing to bet that we will be in the same situation this year!!

In amongst all that we did play some football. 42 games in all with only 12 defeats. Winning the Aberdeenshire Cup along the way.

The highlights are undoubtedly the Aberdeenshire Cup victory and the match at Falkirk. Yes, we lost at Falkirk but it was a great occasion for everyone at the club and one the supporters will remember. Having retained the Aberdeenshire Cup was great for the club and the famous old trophy sits proudly in our boardroom.

Our home form so far this season has been disappointing as far as results go but in all the games bar one we have made enough chances to win the match. We have lost the services this year of Scott Fowlie, PA Bruce and Mark Cowie himself, all of whom were attacking players. Courtney Cooper has been missing a lot through work and Graham Johnston is injured. Add the fact we sold Scott Barbour then that adds up to a high loss of playing staff. This is not unusual for our club and it gives others a chance to shine.

Off the field we have made improvements to the ground with new floodlights and a cover over the terracing at the front of the stand.

I said at the beginning it has been an eventful year and it was. Some low points but on the whole it has been a good year. I for one am happy with how things are going and feel we have a bright future ahead of us. We have a young manager who is learning his trade and I can assure you there is nobody more passionate about the club than Mark. We have a hard working back room staff supporting Mark and a decent bunch of lads for players.

Here’s to a prosperous 2016.

The Scottish Cup draw was made and the Broch’s reward was with a certain rex Hunter amongst the goals, Dennis Forsyth an away tie at Montrose. That would have to wait a couple of and Gordon Davidson also scored. Davidson would get the only weeks though as the festive derby against Peterhead loomed goal in the following game against Deveronvale as the Broch at the Bellslea. The Broch had fixed up Jimmy Noble from Caley. Jimmy had played for Parkvale and was signed up by Aberdeen before joining Caley. In the years to come he would go on to be a real star. “Sneaky” as he was known by his friends was worth the admission fee just to watch his skills. Much later I would talk to George Duthie about his fall out with the Broch but the least said about it the better. After a couple of weeks deciding about his future, Peterhead came calling and offered him a sizeable fee to sign but he refused. A fortnight later they upped the offer to £200 which was a lot of money in those days so he signed on the dotted line. Peterhead wrote to the SFA to cancel his registration with the Broch but the reply said there had never been a G. Duthie on their books, though George had played for the Broch for at least four seasons.

Next up was Montrose on 4th January, not the best of times to play a Scottish Cup tie. The gap between the sides was too much on the day. The Broch were 3-0 down at half time, but the hard working Forsyth got his reward with a goal on 64 minutes to make it 3-1. Further goals from Thomson on 74 minutes, Michie three minutes later and Livingstone (81) made the final score Montrose 6 Fraserburgh 1.
