Today we welcome the players, management, officials and supporters of Dalbeattie Star to Bellslea Park for our William Hill Scottish Cup 1st Round tie.

This is our first ever meeting with Dalbeattie Star and that is the beauty of the Scottish Cup. It is always good to meet new people and make new friends. Neither of the two sides are going to be gracing the Hampden turf on Cup Final day so we need to make the most of the earlier rounds and hope to get as far as we can. The performance and result against Cove Rangers must rank as the best of the season so far. What were your thoughts on the match and how delighted are you on reaching the Aberdeenshire Cup Final?

I think it was a very disciplined performance. First half they had a couple of near misses but we managed to keep them out. Second half we created the better chances I felt and at the same time limited them to shots from distance. It certainly was the best defensive performance the lads have put in and that's the whole team not just the defenders. With the win we get ourselves in to a final which the guys have earned. It will be a good occasion where the best team on the day will reap the rewards. Finals are great for any club. They are days out for the players, coaching staff, Today we face Dalbeattie Star in the Scottish Cup. directors and of course the fans who have followed us How difficult a tie will this be and how important are through thick and thin. Finals bring everyone together. matches like these to the club?

Last weekend against Formartine United the players Scottish cup games are always difficult. There is such an gave everything and were very unlucky not to take incentive in these games of progressing in the anything from the game. What was your reaction to tournament and landing that big tie. Again like finals the game? these games are great occasions as they allow you to play different teams from around the country and meet I have no complaints about the Formartine game. The new people. We all know how financially rewarding lads put in a tremendous effort, especially after having getting in to the next rounds are for us part time clubs had a tough match on the Wednesday. Formartine are a but the players also look to get through to show that the good side and are very ambitious but we matched them highland league is a good standard and pip themselves on the day and in my opinion there wasn't much against better players. It is tough to prepare for games between the teams. I am proud of how the boys against teams from other leagues as you are not familiar performed against one of the top teams on their own with them but we have done our homework and no patch. But as well as hard work and ability you need a doubt Dalbeattie will have done the same. This is the bit of luck and unfortunately we didn't get the rub of the first time I will have been involved in a game against green with their goal and the chances which fell to us. Dalbeattie Star so I look forward to meeting everyone Over the last 4 games we have only conceded 2 goals and welcome all those involved with the club to our which shows we are heading in the right direction. At home, least it gets the first meeting between the two sides out of the way since both management teams took over. All the best, Mark.

Fraserburgh FC Results 1960/61 “The Broch will continue,” was the headline as season 1962-62 drew nearer. But what did the future hold for

Highland League Cup Section matches the club with no money and up to its eyes in debt? I Opponents Home Away remember two of the committee going round the Deveronvale 1-5 1-0 Bellslea with a sheet for a collection and an appeal over Huntly ?-? ?-? the loud speaker, asking for volunteers to go onto the Peterhead 3-6 1-3 committee. Times were getting tough. There were no new strips every season like we see today. The Black and Highland League White stripes back then had faded until they were cream Opponents Home Away and grey. There weren’t even eleven pairs of socks the Buckie Thistle 2-1 1-3 same. The Broch team that turned out against

Clachnacuddin 1-3 0-6 Deveronvale in the League Cup at Bellslea on Saturday th Deveronvale 0-1 2-7 August 11 was Stroud, Noble, Third, Simpson, Elgin City 1-4 3-3 Robertson, G. Strachan, J. Strachan, Summers, Ewen, Forres Mechanics 1-2 1-5 Forsyth, McBeath. Final score was Broch 1 Vale 5. Ewen Huntly 1-3 2-2 scored for the Broch. Next up was Peterhead with a full Inverness Caledonian 0-2 2-4 time score of Broch 3 Peterhead 6 – Ouch!! With no Inverness Thistle 0- 1 0-0 money, the Broch turned to an all local policy with guys Keith 4-1 1-8 like Dosby Noble, Brian McCann, Brian Third, Angus Lossiemouth 1-2 2-4 Taylor and Peter McDonald playing from time to time. It

Nairn County 2-3 3-5 was reported that club needed gates of 1200 to keep Peterhead 0-4 1-6 going. The average gate was 300, hard times indeed. Ross County 2-0 0-3 The Webster Tyre Co donated £5.5/-. A supporter Rothes 1-5 0-5 donated 5/- a lot of money in those days, but it was getting to the stage that one man and his dog were Aberdeenshire Cup First Round watching the games. A home tie in the Qualifying Cup vs Deveronvale (a) L 0-2 against Keith gained some vital income with the score Broch 2 Keith 2. The Broch took a 2-0 lead, with Royen Qualifying Cup North 2nd Round Ewen scoring in the 6th and 22nd minutes. Woodcock vs Keith (h) D 2-2 pulled one back from a penalty in 59 minutes and Fowler nd Qualifying Cup North 2 Round Replay scored on 72 minutes to earn Keith a replay. Dennis vs Keith (a) L 2-5 Forsyth was at centre half for the Broch and his brother Bobby wore the number 11 shirt. The replay was one way traffic with Keith winning 5-2. A 2-2 draw at home to Ross County and a 3-3 draw at Elgin showed signs of improvement but 4 straight defeats followed before a morale boosting home win over Buckie Thistle arrived thanks to goals from John Strachan and Brian Third.

Sadly that would be the last win for 3 and a half months as 7 defeats including 8-1 and 6-1 thrashings at Keith and Peterhead followed. A 2-0 defeat at Deveronvale in the Aberdeenshire Cup saw the last hope of a trophy come and go and despite a 4-1 victory over Keith with Royen Ewen and George Simpson netting doubles the Broch would only pick up two draws from the last 12 games to finish bottom of the table winning only 3 games and conceding 93 goals in the process. Away from

the football you could see “The Young Ones” with Cliff Richard at the Playhouse for 9d less than 4p in new money. Other things to do in the summer were attending the Boys Brigade Summer Camp at Echt. Travel cost £2 and accommodation was another £1. You slept on a palliasse full of straw in the school gym. Mind you the benefits were playing football all day long until bedtime at 10 o’clock. P.T. was in the mornings and was hard so I don’t know how kids from today would cope with those conditions, no fancy computers and games back then!!

Formartine United v Fraserburgh, North Lodge Park, they were bossing things but with Leask in good form in the

Pitmedden visiting goal and McBride, Cowie and Christie keeping the home strikers at bay Formartine had little option but to keep A combination of confidence and cussedness can take you a hammering away until something gave. The problem was that long way in football, but the fact that this one went right with such attention to attack the risk of a breakaway goal down to the wire with a very late single goal being the margin from Broch was always on the cards. The nearest to success in of difference between a team at the top of the league and this way came on the hour mark when a break down the left one at the top of the lower end of it, had an awful lot more initiated by an interchange between Chalmers and West set going on. For a start this was the first encounter between up Noble to whip the ball low and hard to the back post these two since Formartine had relieved the Broch of their taking out Formartine defenders in the process. Davidson was ma nager, fitness coach, goalkeeping coach and Scott Barbour, there for it but was unable to make the ball complete the that in itself was going to up the ante. In addition Broch single revolution it needed to cross the line. The delay was entered this on the back of a midweek cup win over the just enough for home defenders to scramble the ball to hitherto unbeaten Cove while Formartine had taken all three safety. Little more than a minute later, Leask again saved the points up at Brora the Saturday before to break Broch’s Buchan bacon after a corner by Lawson from the right had record of having been the last team in near on two years to entered a second phase and the ball reached McKeown have done so. That raised the confidence stakes for both. The lingering craftily at the front left corner of the box. Taking subtexts to this game ensured a right rip snorter. In the event very careful aim before drilling it through a penalty area as the spectacle was one of two giants almost punching each congested as the Haudagain at 8-15 of a Monday morning, his other to a standstill in a game that had the appearance of a shot looked net-bound all the way until a feline leap from cup tie more than a league match. It started at a frenzied Leask allowed him to get a paw to the ball and touch it away pace and finished much the same although there was a for another corner. One sided although proceedings were by distinct pattern of Formartine getting on top in terms of now, the absence of a goal and the sheer cussedness of the terri tory, possession and pressure and squeezing and Brochers still spelled danger for Formartine. One goal looked squeezing a very resolute visiting team until right at the like being enough but the problem of how to get it remained death there was just enough of a crack to ensure a home until after manager Hunter decided to play his trump card by victory. For long enough though, it looked like the visitors introducing Cammy Keith for Neil Gauld in the 65th minute. would hold out sufficient to pinch a point which few would Initially it looked like Cammy van Persie was going to charge have begrudged them. Within a minute of kick off, Broch around the park to little avail. To begin with he looked to be pushed into Formartine territory and after McKeown had more than adequately contained by Broch defenders and tidied up neatly at the back to end the opening salvo, he was posed little goal threat. That is, however, precisely when he body checked by Davidson who was booked for his efforts. is at his most dangerous. A prolonged siege of the visitors’ Although the game was never really a dirty one it certainly goal area in the 88th minute looked like being a last forlorn wasn’t for the faint hearted as neither side was prepared to shake of the dice until Keith did what he does best and yield a centimetre to the other and there were some pretty changing his run back from far post to near got just enough tough dudes out there. The first goal threat came from onto the ball to squeeze it into the net an inch or two inside United after McVitie had pushed on down the flank before the upright. Formartine took the ball to the flanks and by and picking out Wood. The big striker shielded the ball from large managed to hold it there. When Fraserburgh did gain McBride before releasing it into the path of Gauld. The wee possession United were onto them in a flash to close down striker let fly with a fiercely struck low drive that flew just harry and harass them until they got the ball back. There was past Leask’s left upright. Broch however were nippy on the little doubt that they could hold onto the lead until the final break and Chalmers, West and Davidson all knew where and whistle and they did just that. This was an excellent game how to find each other. Slick though their breaks were the between two teams that knew a lot about each other but still home rearguard was well organised. For all the endeavour of made for compelling viewing from the stands. each side, penetration into opposition penalty box was severely restricted. Around the 25th minute a burst of Full Time: Formartine United 1 Fraserburgh 0 Formartine pressure spearheaded by Wood yielded three corner kicks in a couple of minutes and a free kick from just Formartine United: Andy Reid, Neil McVitie, Stuart Smith, beyond the left corner of the area, taken inevitably by Craig McKeown, Johnny Crawford, Paul Lawson, Graeme Lawson dipped fractionally too late to do damage. As the Rodger, Stuart Anderson, Neil Gauld (Cammy Keith 61), interval approached, Formartine looked increasingly to be Garry Wood, Scott Barbour (Calum Dingwall 89) calling the shots but with the visitors looking comfortable Subs: Erik Thomson, Sam French, Max Berton, Callum enough with eight or more behind the ball and still slippery on Bagshaw, Ewen MacDonald the breakaway it was clear that it could still easily go either Scorers: Cammy Keith (87) way. Fraserburgh U20s faced the prospect of two matches in 3 days with the visit to to face Aberdeen in the Little Big Shot Youth Cup 2nd Round match on Friday 18th September. The young Dons took the lead on 18 minutes from Kalvin Orsi after Edward Flinn had produced a fine save to deny Frank Ross from a free kick. Orsi then doubled the Dons lead from 25 yards curling a shot into the top corner. Flinn then produced a brilliant save from Orsi’s penalty kick to deny the striker a hat-trick and the Broch shocked their SPFL opponents on 40 minutes when Bruce Mair fired home from six yards out. The Broch went in at half time deservedly only one goal behind. The Dons came out of the traps fast in the second half with Joe Nuttall thumping a shot against the post and having another effort ruled out for a push. Flinn then thwarted Ross as the Dons piled on the pressure. Jamie Henry finally ended the Broch’s resistance on 57 minutes before Orsi completed his hat-trick on the hour. Andy Youngson made it 5-1 four minutes later and Nuttall completed the scoring in the last minute. The scoreline was harsh on the young Broch team who had put a lot into the match.

st Next up was a visit from Aberdeen University in the Aberdeenshire League on Monday 21 September. Despite a late arrival at the Bellslea the Uni boys started well and opened the scoring on 13 minutes after a mistake in the home defence. The young Broch who had Jamie Masson playing as a trialist as well as Dean Cowie and Courtney Cooper gett ing some match practice gradually came into the game with the former Peterhead man going close before Adam Cross also tried his luck from 25 yards out. The equaliser arrived on 35 minutes when Calum Reid and Ben Hastie combined on the right and the full back’s cross was turned into his own net by a Uni defender. The Broch started the second half with a bang with Dean Cowie firing the home side ahead on 47 minutes and Jamie Masson making it 3-1 on 50 minutes with a Cantona-esque chip over the visiting keeper. Cammy Buchan hammered a free kick off the bar on 60 minutes before Adam Cross rounded off the scoring with a low drive from 12 yards out on 73 minutes.
