I don’t like social media but am on successes and has a reasoned response to our not so it for club purposes only. Thankfully those who are good times. He emailed me on Thursday absolutely doing all the moaning are in the minority but for those thrilled to bits that he will see us play a cup final who don’t like it they can easily stay away. It is their near his home. He can’t make our games, but this is choice. You would actually think the game was in Wick ideal for him. Hopefully we will lift the cup for him. given the carry on some have had. The last time I looked, Cove is still in the same place as it was last Back to the game today, we should have a cracking season. There were perfectly good reasons for the match. Forres have had some great results in the decision to take the Final to Cove, all of them sensible. last month after difficult start. Since your last notes the guys battled through against

Inverurie Loco Works to the semi final of the Aberdeenshire

Cup. What did you make of the performance?

I think it was a game which we deserved to win. We once again came out the traps very fast and managed to get an early goal. After that the game was pretty even with neither side having much clear cut chances. As a unit we defended really well and managed to keep their strikers quiet. We did have to weather a storm at one stage but we will have to do that in most games. Inverurie are a very good side and are I know you weren't at Buckie on Wednesday but once again well organised under Neil. We made a couple of changes early the guys showed great desire and application to dig out a in the second half and Sean came on to score with his first result despite being harshly reduced to ten men for half the touch which almost settled the game. We saw it out well after game. How delighted were you to learn about the evening's that and managed to progress into the next round. proceedings?

That was followed up with a victory over a much improved I was being kept up to date all along the game through a and enthusiastic Fort William side. Were you surprised by variety of different sources. In fact I was told that our goal to the quality they produced in an attacking sense and were make it 1-0 was scored by four different scorers. Hats off to you happy with your own side's overall efforts? James and the coaches for taking the team and guiding them Firstly, we have to give the new crop of Fort William players through this one. We spoke earlier about how we planned to credit. We knew coming into the game that it would be a set up but I was more than happy for James to make the final totally different game as they had just beaten Rothes 5-1 in call on team selection as he was there to see them at training the North Cup on the Wednesday before. The players were beforehand. To be honest, I know what we have in the squad. well warned of what they were about to face but even with I don’t think we are a team who would suffer by going down a that it was still a bit of the unknown as no one, including man in any game. If anything it rejuvenates us into reaching a myself had seen this new look Fort William team play before. new level. We become more solidified as a team and even They were technically very good and you could see why they harder to beat. I have spoken with a few sources and all will take points off plenty teams this season. They were conclude that we were the better team and deserved to win confident on the ball and tried to do all the right things which the game in 90 minutes. Penalties are a lottery but thankfully they will be getting coached as full time players. We weren’t James made the guys practice at training and it must have particularly at our best that day. I felt our build up play was paid off as despite a scare, we managed to see Buckie off and too slow and wasn’t fluent enough. The game kept breaking reach the final. down as we tried to build up a passage of play or we picked the wrong options which led to frustration both on and off the Today sees another tough challenge against a Forres pitch. We scored six good goals but conceded three which we Mechanics side who have bounced back in the last couple of know as a team is not good enough. However it was another weeks after a difficult start. How important is it to keep the three points so we have to be happy with that. winning run going as you enter another hard set of fixtures?

Last Saturday saw a comfortable win against a young Turriff Forres were always going to bounce back. They have too good United side. You also fielded a youngish team due to of a team not too. I don’t think their preparations helped injuries etc. how pleased were you with the result and how them early on as they managed to get a few injuries to their the players approached the game? squad which limited what Charlie and his team could do on a matchday. Now we see those players slowly coming back and I felt the first half especially we were very good. Our as a result they are getting better. We know that Forres are a attacking play was excellent and in truth it could easily have team capable of beating anyone on their day so we will have been quite a few more than the five at half time. We were to try and look after their strengths whilst play at the top of quick as we went through the gears and at times Turriff our game to get something. We are on a very good run but simply couldn’t cope with us. Credit to Turriff’s young players when teams are on runs like these then opposing teams seem though as they didn’t give up and actually did well in the to try harder to be the ones who end that run. Forres will be second half. Again I thought we were poor in the second half looking to kick start their season against us and will come and gave the ball away too easily. We became careless which down looking for the win. It is up to our boys to overcome isn’t like us but we still managed to get the three points them in all departments to give us the best chance of winning. which was all we asked for. It was good to get Arnie in at left back for the game and he did really well for 90 minutes. All the Best, Logan Watt is also an exciting prospect who did well when he came on, as did Tyler Chicken. It was also good to get Bryan Mark Hay back on the park who has missed the start of the season with injury. He is a big player for us so it’s good that he is back to full fitness.

Afternoon folks

Today we welcome Forres to the Bellslea looking to keep our unbeaten record going. We know today will be difficult as Forres aren’t just a big physical team, they have top quality players who will cause us problems so we need to be on our game to get something out of this. Again the boys have been excellent and the confidence is growing, but at this stage of the season it means nothing we need to keep going and keep working hard.

Last Saturday we were up at Turriff where we dominated the 1st half and should have been at least 8-0 up, we were poor in the 2nd half but to be honest the game was over and we were never in any trouble.

Wednesday night we were up at Buckie for our semi final, again an absolutely top notch performance where we were comfortable even with 10 men for 45 minutes. Young Kieran and Willie were outstanding but to be honest every player was, we won on penalties but it would have been daylight robbery if we didn’t win the game.

Hopefully everyone enjoys the game today and we get another huge 3 points.

Cheers,

Boom

MATCH REPORT – INVERURIE LOCO WORKS

Evening Express Aberdeenshire Cup Quarter Final, Fraserburgh v Inverurie Loco Works, Wednesday 21st August 2019

The Broch saw off the challenge of Inverurie Locos in atrocious conditions at Bellslea Park to progress to the semi-finals of the Evening Express Aberdeenshire Cup where they will meet Buckie Thistle at Victoria Park on Wednesday 4th September. An early goal by Paul Campbell set them on their way and whilst they had a couple of scares along the way Sean Butcher's goal a minute after coming on as a second half substitute settled the nerves and made for a comfortable last 15 minutes.

Once again Mark Cowie shuffled his pack after Saturday's exertions at Buckie with Lewis Davidson, Greg Buchan and Luke Barbour stepping up from the bench to replace Aidan Combe, Sean Butcher and Owen Cairns in the starting line-up. There was also a recall for Michael Rae after the birth of his daughter last week at the expense of Jamie Beagrie who was back offshore.

As with the game on Saturday the Broch got off to the perfect start when good interchange on the right ended with Lewis Davidson's cross into the penalty area being met by Paul Campbell to head the home side into the lead on 3 minutes. Two minutes later Lewis Davidson, Scott Barbour and Luke Barbour combined to play in the former but as he raced into the box the ball sped away from him into the grateful arms of Andrew Reid.

Scott Barbour had a chance on 19 minutes when a long ball forward by Paul Leask was missed by the Locos defence but the Broch's top scorer couldn't connect properly and it resulted in an easy save for the visitor's keeper. On 27 minutes a short corner on the left by Greg Buchan to Scott Barbour resulted in a dangerous cross which Andrew Reid did well to punch clear under severe pressure.

Locos forwards were finding it difficult to get any change out of William West and Kieran Simpson at the heart of the Broch defence as they looked for a way back into the game. Three minutes before the break Lewis Davidson's throw-in found Scott Barbour at the corner of the 18 yard box and he turned his marker before firing in a shot which crept wide of Andrew Reid's left hand post.

Half Time: Fraserburgh 1 Inverurie Loco Works 0

The visitors thought they had equalised two minutes into the second half when a corner from the right was met by Andrew Hunter's head but Paul Young was on hand to clear off the line with Locos players convinced it had crossed with the match officials waving play on. On 62 minutes neat build up between Ryan Cowie and Luke Barbour released Greg Buchan down the left and his cross came off the crossbar with no one in black and white close enough to profit from the rebound.

Locos were pushing for the equaliser and in the 68th minute N eil Gauld flicked the ball onto Jonathan Smith inside the penalty area but he could only head straight at Paul Leask from 10 yards. The Broch made a double change on 71 minutes with Aidan Combe & Sean Butcher replacing Luke Barbour & Greg Buchan and the move paid immediate dividends when Scott Barbour flicked the ball back to Paul Young 20 yards out and his skidding shot was parried by Andrew Reid straight into the path of Sean Butcher who gleefully swept home the rebound from close range.

Three minutes later Paul Young played a pass out to Scott Barbour who found Paul Campbell in space but his goal bound shot was tipped away by the Locos custodian at the expense of a fruitless corner. Michael Rae then stung the hands of Andrew Reid from 25 yards as the Broch looked to make the game safe.

Locos weren't giving up the ghost though and on 82 minutes Eric Watson played the ball into the six yard area which resulted in Paul Leask going down under a challenge with Neil Gauld then hooking the loose ball over the crossbar. The visitors had one last chance when Jonathan Smith's ball into the box just evaded Neil Gauld as he stretched to make contact and Paul Leask gratefully flopped on the ball.

FORRESMATCH REPORTMECHANICS – INVERURIE F.C. CLUB LOCO HISTORY WORKS

What’s in a Name? There has been much debate over the years and many interesting theories as to why the club has a unique title. Some suggest the name is linked to the Mechanics Institute (now the Town Hall). Others suggest the name came from the many men who came from the South to fc work on the new railway line being constructed. To find the best authority on the origins of the name we need to look at the writings of Colin G. Watson (Many will know him as 'Yankee'). In 1984 Colin published a very insightful and well researched book, 'FORRES MECHANICS The First Hundred Years'.

In the book Colin suggests the following: Despite being the oldest Club in the North of

Scotland, Forres Mechanics were not at the time of their formation the oldest club in the town of Forres, there having been in existence for fully two years the St. Lawrence Club.

Colin goes on to explain that some members of this club appeared to be out of favour and failed to feature in games against local rivals. It would seem this fact so outraged the members it prompted them to break away and set up their own club. So in October 1884 a meeting was convened and those present duly decided to set up a new club. Having taken the decision thoughts turned to a name for the club. Colin continues:

The only common factor between those present (at the meeting) was that they were all "Mechanics". This did

not mean that they all tinkered with the latest Ford or Rover model off the assembly line as these were still far in the future. They were simply, as defined in the Oxford English Dictionary "people who are employed in manual occupation; and craftsmen". And so in October 1884 Forres Mechanics were established.

Tom Cook Whilst not a great deal is known about the men who founded the Mechanics we do know that Mr Tom Cook had the honour of being named the first Captain. Along with the two men who initiated the breakaway from St Lawrence, William Boyne and Paul Martin, Cook led the team into their first competitive match in November

1884 at the Haughs in Elgin, the team earning a respectable draw.

Cook also led the team in the battle for supremacy in Forres, scoring in one of the two matches against St. Lawrence, the Mechanics coming out on top with a win and a draw. The matches were played at St Lawrence and Mechanics home game was held in the Burdshaugh area of Forres.

Moving Home Forres Mechanics first started playing at in 1886. Previously they played at fields at Burdshaugh and Greshop. Since then the ground has changed twice. Bumper crowds at games in the late 1940's prompted the club to improve Mosset Park. In 1948 the club had purchased a hangar, we assume surplus to requirements after the war. The idea was to use the hanger to provide new seating for around 500 people. Discussions at committee meetings eventually led to the club agreeing to a more substantial structure. It was agreed to spend a quite considerable sum of £3000 on concrete based wooden stand. Committee reports suggested that £2000 had by this time already been raised and a shrewd deal was also done to sell on the hangar for £500 giving a £400 profit! The resulting structure and improvements to the entrance and perimeter made Mosset Park the envy of many clubs although when the time came for change again in 1986 the old stand had definitely served its purpose.

In the early 1980's permission was given by the Government to construct a bypass around the town. There had been much debate by local interests including shopkeepers and those who wanted to preserve the 'Common' land to the North of the Town around Bogton and the 'Walkies', a popular walking area alongside the railway line. As plans showed the route of the bypass dissecting the existing ground and stand at Mosset Park the club too had a fair interest in the proposals!

In the end agreement was reached and for Forres Mechanics this meant the relocation of the ground some 500 meters to the south-east. If the new stand built in 1948 was the envy of visiting clubs then one can only imagine the envy of visitors from 1987. The relocated Mosset Park featured a brand new stand a perimeter wall new entrances with access at either end of the ground and facilities including board rooms, and a social club.

The new ground was at the time the finest in the Highland League and given the League Championship and North of Cup success the previous two years marked a big high in the history of the club. The new stand was opened with a game against Heart of Midlothian with the legendary BBC commentator David Francey the guest announcer.

MATCHMATCH REPORT REPORT – INVERURIE – FORT LOCOWILLIAM WORKS

Breedon Scottish Highland Football League, Fraserburgh v Fort William, Saturday 24th August 2019

The Broch survived a first half scare against a much improved and enthusiastic young Fort William side benefiting from their on loan Inverness Caledonian Thistle players. A Sean Butcher first half brace and a Paul Campbell strike were responded to by Roderick Kennedy’s cool finish and Ross Gunn’s curling free kick to give the home side a narrow advantage at the break. Sean Butcher and Paul Campbell both completed their hat-tricks early in the second half to give the Black and Whites some breathing space but Jordan Andrew’s late strike gave the scoreline some respectability. There were two changes from the midweek Aberdeenshire Cup win over Inverurie Loco Works with Aidan Combe and Sean Butcher restored to the starting XI and Greg Buchan & Luke Barbour dropping to the bench.

The Broch had been making a habit of notching early goals in recent games and should have gone ahead in the first minute again when William West found Lewis Davidson on the right and his cross was headed over by Paul Campbell. Three minutes later a short free kick by Aidan Combe into Scott Barbour inside the penalty area saw the Broch forward turn his marker but his low shot was saved at the near post by the Fort keeper. The home side were doing all the attacking as expected and on 6 minutes another long pass by William West out to Lewis Davidson saw the full back dink a ball into Paul Campbell but his shot on the turn was easily saved. On 13 minutes Lewis Davidson and Paul Campbell combined at the edge of the Fort penalty area but the former’s shot was just wide. Five minutes later Ryan Fyffe tried his luck with a 25 yard free kick but it barely troubled

Paul Leask in the home goal. The home side took the lead on 21 minutes when Paul Young’s cross into the near post caused confusion between the Fort keeper and one of his defenders and Sean Butcher managed to poke the ball over the line from close range. The Broch were in the ascendancy now and Paul Young saw a shot blocked for a corner from which Kieran

Simpson’s header was cleared and when the ball was recycled by Paul Young out to Aidan Combe the winger’s lob from the edge of the box dipped just over the crossbar. Ryan Cowie and Aidan Combe then combined on the right but the full back’s header went wide. On 25 minutes the visitors shocked the Broch when a long ball forward was missed by William West and

Roderick Kennedy drove forward before planting a cool finish past Paul Leask to level the scores. Two minutes later the Broch went back in front when Aidan Combe’s cross was picked up by Sean Butcher who saw his shot blocked but the ball fell kindly to Paul Campbell 18 yards out who managed to stab the ball past Martin MacKinnon into the top left hand corner. This seemed to settle the home side and only the brilliance of Fort keeper Martin MacKinnon thwarted the Broch as first Scott Barbour saw his shot from 12 yards well saved and then the same player pounced on a loose ball inside the box but once again he was denied by the visitor’s stopper. On 40 minutes Sean Butcher went close with a 20 yard free kick which was expertly pushed away by Martin MacKinnon and from the resultant corner Greg Buchan’s shot on the turn was palmed away by the Fort keeper. He was powerless on 42 minutes to prevent the home side extending their lead though. William West’s knock down at the edge of the box was picked up by Sean Butcher who coolly swept the ball past the Fort custodian into the far corner. The two goal advantage was short lived however as William West upended Robert Nevison outside the box and Ross Gunn curled a beautiful free kick past Paul Leask from 20 yards just before the break.

Half Time: Fraserburgh 3 Fort William 2

The home side made the perfect start to the second half when three minutes in Lewis Davidson’s cross was picked up by Owen Cairns and he laid the ball back to Paul Campbell 16 yards out to thump home a low drive. They extended their lead on 55 minutes when Ryan Cowie’s corner from the right would have been latched onto by William West had he not had his shirt tugged inside the box. Paul Campbell slotted home the resultant penalty despite the Fort keeper diving the right way to complete his hat-trick. A minute later Greg Buchan saw his free kick from outside the box brilliantly saved by Martin MacKinnon but the visitors shot themselves in the foot on the hour when Paul Campbell won possession inside the Fort box and his cross was met by Sean Butcher to complete his hat-trick. On 72 minutes a foul on Luke Barbour saw Owen Cairns fire in a free kick which the Fort keeper did well to save. A minute later Robert Nevison saw his long range effort fly wide of Paul Leask’s upright but the visitors did pull a goal back on 79 minutes when a long diagonal ball to Jordan Andrew on the left saw him cut inside Lewis Davidson and fire a low drive past Paul Leask from the edge of the penalty area. Three minutes later Paul Campbell was sent clear on the right and his cross was only half cleared to Greg Buchan but he shot straight at the keeper from 12 yards. Jordan Andrew then headed wide at the other end from a free kick and with five minutes to go Luke Barbour and Paul Campbell combined at the edge of the box before the latter saw his drive well saved once again by Martin MacKinnon in the Fort goal.

North players took the road to Gigg Lane

Fans of Bury FC were left heartbroken after the club they had followed through thick and thin was expelled from the at the end of August after the failure to find a suitable buyer. Near-neighbour Bolton Wanderers narrowly escaped a similar fate after its future was assured following a successful takeover. Andy Holt, the owner of another Lancashire club, Accrington Stanley, blamed the football authorities for the situation at Bury and Bolton by encouraging the smaller clubs to live far beyond their means and which led inevitably to the amassing of huge debts.

It was quite different in the 1950s when a tight rein was kept on a club’s finances, there was a maximum wage for players, and the gate money could be relied on to help keep the club solvent. In the 1950s and 60s, Bury attracted a fair number of Scottish players to Gigg Lane, the club’s home since it was founded in 1885. One in particular was Stewart Imlach who arrived from Lossiemouth AFC in May 1952 on the strong recommendation of Willie Shanks, a referee from Fochabers who acted as a scout for Bury and a few other English clubs. Imlach played two seasons at Gigg Lane before he moved to Derby County and then Nottingham Forest with whom he starred in their FA Cup victory over Luton Town in 1959. The year before he was in the Scotland squad for the World Cup finals in Sweden.

Imlach’s story has already been told in an earlier Northern Slant but it’s worth recapping the time he spent with Bury as related in My father and other working-class football heroes, an acclaimed biography written by his son, Gary Imlach. Gary knew little about his dad’s spell at Bury and had to go digging in the archives of the Bury Times at the British Newspaper Library to find out how his father had fared with the Shakers. He discovered, as he charted his father’s progress, that there was a period charm about the match reports when sports writers wrote of “splendid equalisers” and “hapless goalkeepers”. His father’s meteoric rise to become a first-team regular was accomplished within a playing month and he soon became one of Bury’s star players. Imlach was serving an apprenticeship to become a joiner which Bury allowed him to complete before he became a full-time player with the club.

Full-time football with Bury didn’t appeal to Rodwill Clyne of Inverness Caledonian. Willie Shanks arranged for him to have a four-week trial with Bury in August 1957, but Clyne confessed in his autobiography, In a Different League, that he became disenchanted with full-time football. He trained for three mornings and two afternoons a week and the rest of his time was his own which meant “endless hours of drinking coffee in cafes”. He told Bury manager Dave Russell that he was homesick and returned north with no regrets at passing up the chance of playing full-time football.

Peterhead-born Jimmy Lovie was already established at Gigg Lane during Clyne’s brief stay and had earlier served his football apprenticeship with Dundee United who he had joined from North School FPs, a team which played in the Peterhead Welfare League. Things didn’t work out at Tannadice and he returned north in August 1953 to play for Peterhead in the Highland League. Bury showed an interest in him but there was an on/off saga over a prospective deal until Lovie signed for the Second Division club and made his debut for the on February 2, 1957. Other Scots with Bury in 1957 included goalkeeper Roy McLaren who had arrived from St Johnstone, Walter Kelly came from Raith Rovers, Billy Ritchie was ex-Stirling Albion, James Mercer had come from Rosyth Recreation while Jimmy Reid had joined from Dundee United.

Among Lovie’s last appearances for the Blue Toon was an away league fixture against Keith on January 12. The teams were 1-1 at half-time but towards the end of the game, inside-left Lovie “embarked on a lively spell which brought the winning goal. In a long run he forced a path clean through the home defence, but was robbed almost on the goal-line. However, Lovie ran on to the ball thirty yards out and fired in a great shot which shook the rigging and Peterhead were in front. This was one of the best goals seen at for some time.” Lovie’s match-winner probably helped seal his move to Gigg Lane.

Lovie broke through to Bury’s first team but the outside -left was later displaced by Irish international Norman Lockhart. When the latter injured his leg, Lovie came back into the side and teamed up with Garmouth-born Jimmy Munro whose career had started with Aberdeen during the war and came to Gigg Lane from Lincoln City in January 1958. Both players were on target the following month when Bury beat local rivals Rochdale 4-1. In an away match against Chesterfield, Lovie’s pen portrait in the programme describes him as “a typical hardy Scot with a powerful shot in both boots”. By coincidence, Lovie later enjoyed more success with Chesterfield making 95 first-team appearances for the Derbyshire club compared with 51 outings with Bury.

Jimmy Lovie usually played outside-left and is in a Bury team photograph from March 1959 in which three other Scots appear – Jimmy Munro, full-back Tommy Neill who arrived from Bolton Wanderers in December 1956 and winger Eddie Robertson who joined Bury from Linlithgow Rose in August 1954. Season 1959-60 was fairly unremarkable during which Bury finished 10th in the Third Division. Memorable matches included a closely fought home FA Cup-tie against the mighty Arsenal whose Scottish star David Herd scored the only goal. An all-ticket crowd of 29,880 watched the match which was played on a blanket of snow.

The Scots who turned out for Bury were typical of the many journeymen footballers who played with lower- league English clubs before heading back across the border after hanging up their boots. Jimmy Munro returned to Moray and died at Elgin in 1997, while Jimmy Lovie went back to Peterhead. He was 85 when he sadly died on August 30 last year.

The Broch started well on 4 minutes when Zane Laird's flick on found Andrew Hannar but the striker's shot drifted over the crossbar. A minute later at the other end Christopher Angus' cross landed kindly for Greg Cowie but his effort was blocked by Edward Flinn.

Midway through the first half Andrew Hannar found Joel Murray with a good pass but the Broch midfielder's effort was well saved by Morgan Cook. Locos sprung forward almost immediately and Christopher Angus saw his shot just clear the crossbar.

Another good ball forward by Andrew Hannar on 32 minutes picked out Tyler Chicken but his shot fizzed just wide. A great move on 39 minutes involving Bryan Hay, Scott Murison, Andrew Hannar, Logan Watt and Tyler Chicken released Zane Laird on the wing and his cross to the back post was met by Andrew Hannar but Morgan Cook made a good save to thwart the Broch striker.

The Broch took the lead a minute before the break when Andrew Hannar was downed in the box but he got up to hammer home the penalty after being made to retake it when Morgan Cook moved early for the first attempt.

Half Time: Inverurie Loco Works 0 Fraserburgh 1

Andrew Hannar tried his luck from outside the box on 46 minutes but it sneaked just wide of the upright and a minute later at the other end Christopher Angus did likewise for Locos. The home striker went one better on 54 minutes when his 25 yard drive flew past Edward Flinn into the net. Three minutes later Andrew Mitchell fired home to put Locos ahead for the first time.

The Broch went in search of an equaliser and Adam Taylor's cross was controlled inside the penalty area by

Andrew Hannar but the home keeper was up to the task. On 69 minutes Adam Taylor and Scott Murison combined on the right with the former seeing his shot well saved by Morgan Cook.

The Broch levelled in stunning fashion on 73 minutes when Adam Taylor and Ethan Geary combined to set up Tyler Chicken who crashed the ball home from 30 yards with a dipping shot which flew over the goalkeeper high into the net. Five minutes later Christopher Angus found Ian Chalmers in space inside the area but Edward Flinn made a brave save to stop the Locos forward.

The visitors took the lead on 81 minutes when Logan Watt finished off a great 5 man move with a shot from the edge of the area which went in off the post. With three minutes left Tyler Chicken wriggled free of the Locos defence but saw his shot well saved by Morgan Cook.

With the last kick of the game the Broch failed to clear a corner from the right and Tait Duthie was on hand to hammer the ball into the roof of the net.

MATCH REPORT – TURRIFF UNITED

Breedon Scottish Highland Football League, Turriff United v Fraserburgh, Saturday 31st August 2019

The Broch's first half blitz floored a young Turriff team at the Haughs to see the visitors pick up another 3 comfortable points to retain their top of the League status. Strikes from Paul Young, Scott Barbour, Michael Rae, Sean Butcher and Greg Buchan saw the Black and Whites on easy street. The second half was pretty low key with the Broch finding Turriff keeper Fraser Hobday in fine form but Sean Butcher did extend the lead before Lewis Buxton fired home a late consolation for the home side. There were several changes due to injury and work commitments with Ryan Cowie & Aidan Combe both missing the game after picking up knocks against Fort William and Lewis Davidson & Luke Barbour away working. That meant starts for Arnadas Cepulis, Greg Buchan & Owen Cairns with a call up to the bench for Tyler Chicken.

The Broch made what seems their customary early start when a long ball forward by Paul Leask on 3 minutes found Scott Barbour just outside the Turriff United penalty area and he played a delicious chipped pass into the box for Paul Young to run onto and round the keeper to slide the ball into the empty net. Three minutes later Owen Cairns picked up a loose ball in midfield and found Sean Butcher outside the box but he dragged his shot wide of goal. On 8 minutes Michael Rae found Paul Campbell on the right and his cross was turned home by Scott Barbour to double the Broch's lead.

On 12 minutes another long pass down the left to Scott Barbour saw the Broch striker cross into the middle just behind Paul Campbell but it fell kindly to Sean Butcher but once again his shot went wide of the post. The visitors should have stretched their lead on 13 minutes when first Scott Barbour fired past the post when clean through and then Paul Campbell saw his shot saved when he was released in on goal. The Broch were creating lots of chances but failing to take them and on 18 minutes they passed up another great opening when Owen Cairns and Michael Rae combined to release Scott Barbour down the right but his pin point cross was headed wide by Paul Campbell from close range. Two minutes later they did extend their lead to 3-0 when Paul Campbell controlled the ball inside the box and laid it back to Michael Rae 20 yards out and he lashed home a low drive past Fraser Hobday.

On 25 minutes a long ball forward was misjudged by Cameron Bowden and Scott Barbour nipped in but his lobbed effort flew over the crossbar. The Broch kept probing for a fourth and Owen Cairns found Sean Butcher in space on the right but his shot from wide on the right was well saved by the Turriff keeper. The goal did arrive on 37 minutes however when Scott Barbour's cross into the six yard box was met by Sean Butcher who headed past the exposed Fraser Hobday. Just before the break Greg Buchan was released by Scott Barbour's through ball and the Broch midfielder saw his initial effort saved but he followed up to drill the ball past the Turriff goalkeeper to make it 5-0.

Half Time: Turriff United 0 Fraserburgh 5

The Broch picked up where they left off and almost made it six on 48 minutes when Greg Buchan laid the ball back to Arnadas Cepulis who drilled in a shot which was well saved by Fraser Hobday. Midway through the half the visitors eventually got the sixth goal when Paul Campbell turned his marker and fired in a shot which was blocked but the rebound fell nicely to Sean Butcher to poke the ball home. On 74 minutes the Turriff goal survived a double scare when first Scott Barbour picked out Sean Butcher but he shot straight at Fraser Hobday. Then Paul Young teed up Paul Campbell but the Broch striker's curling shot went well over the crossbar. A minute later Sean Butcher sent Paul Campbell clear on the right and his shot across the keeper was tipped round the post by Fraser Hobday.

The Broch were peppering the home goal and Greg Buchan's free kick into the area on 78 minutes was met by the head of Paul Campbell but the Turriff keeper saved on the line at the second attempt. A minute later and Owen Cairns driving run ended with the young defender firing in a shot which was well saved. Owen Cairns then turned provider on 84 minutes when he set up Paul Campbell but once again Fraser Hobday was in the right place to thwart the Broch attacker. Turriff's first real effort came on 86 minutes when Calum Reid broke forward but he saw his shot go agonisingly wide of the far post. They did get their reward on 88 minutes though when Robert Ward's drive from inside the area was well saved by Paul Leask but the ball was turned home by Lewis Buxton at the far post. Right at the end a Greg Buchan corner from the right dropped to Arnadas Cepulis at the back post but he side footed wide from close range.

MATCH REPORT – BUCKIE THISTLE

Evening Express Aberdeenshire Cup Semi Final, Buckie Thistle v Fraserburgh, Wednesday 4th September 2019

The Broch battled the conditions and the odds to claim a place in next month’s Evening Express Aberdeenshire Cup Final against Formartine United. A tense first half erupted into life just before the break when Michael Rae was red carded for an apparent stamp on Kevin Fraser. Despite the numerical disadvantage the visitors took the lead early in the second half through an own goal and looked set to win the tie in normal time until Kieran Simpson’s unfortunate intervention deep into stoppage time. The tie was then decided by the taking of penalty kicks with both sides having chances to win it before the Broch triumphed. The Broch made one change to the team that defeated Turriff United with Jamie Beagrie coming into the centre of defence to replace Arnadas Cepulis with William West taking up an unfamiliar position at left back. Ryan Cowie returned from injury to take a place on the bench.

The home side had the first chance of the game on 3 minutes when Sam Urquhart cut inside from the left wing and fired in a shot which Paul Leask did well to tip round the post. The Broch responded on 6 minutes when a corner from the right was half cleared to Jamie Beagrie who chipped the ball back but Sean Butcher headed wide. Ten minutes later and the same player had another chance when Scott Barbour whipped in a cross from the left but once again the Broch striker headed wide. On 24 minutes the Broch came close when the ball broke to Scott Barbour 25 yards out and his raking drive was deflected just over the crossbar with the Buckie keeper stranded. A minute later and Greg Buchan connected well at the edge of the box but Daniel Bell did brilliantly to deny the Broch midfielder. The visitors continued to push for the opener and Greg Buchan’s free kick on 33 minutes broke kindly for Scott Barbour but his shot on the turn produced another good save by the home keeper. Five minutes later Sam Robertson tried his luck with a speculative shot from 20 yards but Paul Leask made a comfortable save. The home side came close on 43 minutes when a corner broke to Shaun Carroll at the back post but his low shot was cleared off the line by Michael Rae. Just before the break the Broch midfielder was shown the red card for an apparent stamp on Kevin Fraser although it looked a rather harsh decision. Half Time: Buckie Thistle 0 Fraserburgh 0

The Broch reshuffled at the break with Ryan Cowie replacing Greg Buchan and taking up his normal position at left back with William West moving into the centre of defence and Jamie Beagrie pushing forward to take Michael Rae’s position in centre of midfield. Despite being down to ten men the visitors continued to make the running and Sean Butcher was unlucky to see his curling shot from Paul Campbell’s lay off drift just wide of goal on 51 minutes. A minute later there was joy amongst the Broch ranks when Paul Campbell won a free kick on the right which Ryan Cowie fired in and the ball flew into the net off Shaun Wood under pressure from Paul Campbell. Buckie were straight on the attack and Joseph McCabe had a shot from distance which saw Paul

Leask pull off a good save. On 70 minutes the Broch keeper did well to thwart Sam Robertson with his feet after a cross went right through the six yard box and the Buckie striker fired in a low drive at the back post. Four minutes later Ryan Cowie released Scott Barbour on the left and he drove past his marker before firing in a shot which Daniel Bell did well to save. Another break by the Broch two minutes later saw Sean Butcher find Scott Barbour on

th the left and his centre was side footed wide by the aforementioned Butcher. Buckie came close in the 90 minute to an equaliser when Kieran Adams headed wide from a good position. Deep in stoppage time the home side cruelly snatched a leveler when a cross into the Broch penalty area was headed into his own net by Kieran Simpson as he tried to clear the ball.

Paul Campbell and Shaun Carroll traded penalties at the start of the spot kick decider before Owen cairns gave the Broch the advantage netting whilst Scott Graham missed. William West then hammered his spot kick against the bar and Joseph McCabe levelled things up again. Kieran Simpson then overcame his disappointment to coolly slot home and Scott Adams saw his kick saved to give the Broch the advantage again. Paul Young had a chance to win it but smashed his kick against the crossbar and Andrew MacAskill made sure it was level again after five kicks each. Scott Barbour and Luke Barbour netted the visitors next two kicks but Lewis MacKinnon and Declan Milne did likewise for Buckie. Paul Leask then skied his kick well over but redeemed himself by saving Kevin Fraser’s tame kick. Jamie Beagrie slotted home his kick before Kieran Adams launched his into the evening sky to send the Broch faithful into raptures.
