Michael Booker Jr. All rights reserved. iii ABSTRACT This study introduces the idea that, taken together, the major institutional frameworks of the ultra-Protestant culture of loyalism in the southwestern lowlands of Scotland can be conceived as a civil religion. I argue that loyalist civil religion in lowland Scotland was comprised of a distinct set of institutions including the Orange Order, Glasgow Rangers Football Club, loyalist street gangs and paramilitaries and loyalist flute bands. The elements that informed each of these loyalist groups were not unrelated, but part of a multidimensional and interactive civil religious movement. Each institution appealed to a wide range of viewpoints within the loyalist community but they all rallied around the same general “cause” and participated in the same ritual gatherings. Loyalist civil religion in the urban lowlands was articulated through an understood system of rituals, folklore, symbols and moral values related to the Protestant Irish’s shared experience of historical conflict and victimization at the hands of Roman Catholics. Regular ritual commemorations of past events guided contemporary loyalist agendas and actions. Through the folk collage of symbols, songs and other folk displays at loyalist ritual events, the history and contemporary goals of loyalism were relayed to future generations of potential loyalists. The recurrent celebration of past military heroes, battles and blood sacrifices in the name of the loyalist cause helped to legitimize and sustain loyalist culture in Scotland, even after the civil religion of loyalism developed into a civil religion of a “Lost Cause.” This work argues that loyalist civil religion was not just a formation of an agreed-upon national creed, but functioned to unify a subgroup within a nation driven to articulate its identity in a way contrary to the national status quo. Loyalist civil religion forged not only a banner of collective allegiance, but also a charter for action. We make quality popular factual programmes for all the major UK broadcasters and have a growing international slate. Caledonia has produced hundreds of hours for the BBC – Channels 2 and 4, Scotland, Alba, Wales, Northern Ireland and BBC America - ITV, Channel 4, Five, Sky, Foxtel, The History Channel Europe, USA and Australia, the Crime & Investigation Channel and Germany’s ZDF. We now employ 14 people full time, along with various freelancers. We currently have a four year output deal for 24 hours per year of programming from BBC Alba. Leadership, Strategy and Support How can the industry successfully implement the recommendations outlined in the Screen Sector Leadership Group report? The core message of the SSLG recommendations is increased investment. There is no doubt Scotland has creativity, business expertise and talent. But Scotland is also lagging behind, not just the rest of the world, but other parts of the UK. In our submission, we focus on our experiences of previous investment – good and bad - and strategies for the future. How can we ensure that the Screen Unit has the remit and responsibility for providing the strategic vision and leadership across the sector? The screen sector – with its own wide range of conflicting remits from cultural to commercial – sits within a still wider arts body Creative Scotland (CS). It is critical that the Screen Unit (SU) adopts a coherent targeted approach to our complex and fast changing industry with its different, sometimes competing, priorities.

    CUBA AND THE CONSTRUCTION OF ALTERNATIVE GLOBAL TRADE SYSTEMS: ALBA AND FREE TRADE IN THE AMERICAS LARRY CATÁ BACKER* & AUGUSTO MOLINA** ABSTRACT The ALBA (Alternativa Bolivariana para los Pueblos de Nuestra América) (Bolivarian Alternative for The People of Our America), the command economy alternative to the free trade model of globalization, is one of the greatest and least understood contributions of Cuba to the current conversation about globalization and economic harmonization. Originally conceived as a means for forging a unified front against the United States by Cuba and Venezuela, the organization now includes Nicaragua, Honduras, Dominica, and Bolivia. ALBA is grounded in the notion that globalization cannot be left to the private sector but must be overseen by the state in order to maximize the welfare of its citizens. The purpose of this Article is to carefully examine ALBA as both a system of free trade and as a nexus point for legal and political resistance to economic globalization and legal internationalism sponsored by developed states. The Article starts with an examination of ALBA’s ideology and institutionalization. It then examines ALBA as both a trade organization and as a political vehicle for confronting the power of developed states in the trade context within which it operates. ALBA remains * W.     July at the Museum! Battle of Aughrim, John Mulvaney. The Battle of the Boyne, July 1st 1690. On 1 July 1690, the Battle of the Boyne was fought between King James II's Jacobite army, and the Williamite Army under William of Orange. Despite only being a minor military victory in favour of the Williamites, it has a major symbolic significance. The Battle's annual commemorations by The Orange Order, a masonic-style fraternity dedicated to the protection of the Protestant Ascendancy, remain a topic of great controversy. This is especially true in areas of Northern Ireland where sectarian tensions remain rife. No year in Irish history is better known than 1690. No Irish battle is more famous than William III's victory over James II at the River Boyne, a few miles west of Drogheda. James, a Roman Catholic, had lost the throne of England in the bloodless "Glorious Revolution" of 1688. William was Prince of Orange, a Dutch-speaking Protestant married to James's daughter Mary, and became king at the request of parliament. James sought refuge with his old ally, Louis XIV of France, who saw an opportunity to strike at William through Ireland. He provided French officers and arms for James, who landed at Kinsale in March 1689. The lord deputy, the Earl of Tyrconnell was a Catholic loyal to James, and his Irish army controlled most of the island. James quickly summoned a parliament, largely Catholic, which proceeded to repeal the legislation under which Protestant settlers had acquired land. During the rule of Tyrconnell, the first Catholic viceroy since the Reformation, Protestants had seen their influence eroded in the army, in the courts and in civil government.

The Celtic International Fund hopes to provide film-makers with an opportunity to co-develop and coproduce distinctive, ambitious works to enrich primetime programme schedules, to have a national impact with audiences in the territories of Scotland, Wales, Ireland and Northern Ireland and seek to reach audiences worldwide. This call-out encompasses three genres, Factual, Formats and Drama. For all projects, we envisage a development phase where funding would be provided to develop ideas but also to develop the co- production framework which must have a production element in Scotland, Wales and either Ireland or Northern Ireland. Without the evolution of proper politics the people of Northern Ireland will continually be manipulated by sectarian politicians and anti-secularist clergy who make no contribution to the social and economic well-being of the people or the country but only continue to fan the flames

The article presented here was originally submitted to an academic human rights journal, and was sent back to me for only minor revisions after peer review. After these revisions were done, however, the editors of the journal asked me to make clearer the practical implications of my conclusions. This led to me redrafting the last section of the article, to include the numbered points on what lessons could be learned and what measures could be adopted in light of the points raised. One of these points focuses on the necessity of human rights education and training, specifically with reference to the right to freedom of expression, and necessary restrictions of that right . The editors accepted most of these points but felt that, here, I should have stressed how the songs cited can be used to demonstrate what is and what is not “hate speech”. Since I felt that this actually contradicted my argumentation as a whole, and if it was to be dealt with properly would open up a whole new can of worms, I cut the relevant point in its entirety – I was already far over the word limit, and by this stage the review and revision process had taken the best part of a year. The editors deemed this latest version almost ready for publication, but requested that I include a new paragraph in the conclusion.
