Billy Singh, New Scottish Campaign Co-ordinator INTRODUCTION

Since I started in December 2006 it’s been a roller coaster of emotions. On my first day we have a photo shoot with avid supporters of our campaign Billy Bragg and Rangers and Scotland captain . Day three is spent with Barry’s older brother and former Rangers and Hearts star Derek Ferguson delivering our Safe Place workshop on asylum seekers and refugees to primary schools in . Day four I meet with one of our committee advisors Derek Kirkwood within the inner sanctum of the Scottish Football Association at . But it’s not all glamour. On my way to the recent I notice the BNP selling their propaganda outside the . It was a busy wee spot! The recent race furore with regards to Big Brother and the constant negative attitudes towards Muslims and our new citizens from the EU reinforces my belief that we must never be complacent. I believe that racism changes according to political and social conditions and that racism operates along at least three axes. First, it is characterised by denigratory stereotyping, hatred and violence. Second, it sets in motion cycles of disadvantage. Third, it negates and even obliterates the culture, religion and language of the groups concerned. I am looking forward to the challenge that lies ahead but saddened by the fact that in 2007 we still need to fight the scourge that is racism in our society.

Here is an overview of our major achievements over the last 18 months since our last annual review. This is only a small snapshot of our tireless efforts. For a more detailed review of our work please log onto www.theredcardscotland.org

Happy New Year 2006! January began with the fantastic news that the Scottish Executive had awarded SRTRC Scotland £275,000 to continue developing our work as part of the 'One Scotland' campaign. This governmental support will be crucial in getting the anti-racist message to as many young people and football fans as possible over the next three years.

Website – www.theredcardscotland.org Our website has been designed to be a central point of contact which can provide a wealth of information on events, resources and racism in Scotland. The racial incident report card allows people to report racist incidents taking place at football matches from the grassroots through to the professional game. Our annual Fortnight of Action has a section with reports submitted by organisers of these events, it also includes an action packed gallery with over 70 photos including all SPL clubs. The Schools section is continuing to grow with SRTRC event reports, poetry and stories now being submitted by young people. Most visitors to the site are based in the UK, but it also receives regular visitors from as far away as Japan, Brazil and the USA. From launching in 2005 with an average daily visit of 60 unique users, the website has grown to attract a daily average of 300. With more websites linking to us, this trend will continue to increase. “SRTRC has worked hard to develop its work in Scotland and has rightly earned respect as an effective and innovative anti-racism initiative. Using football, SRTRC has been successful in highlighting the damaging effects of racism and the benefits of diversity. I am pleased to continue to offer the Executive’s support for this work, which is very much in tune with the One Scotland Many Cultures campaign. We hope to continue to work together with SRTRC to ensure there is No Place for Racism in Scotland.”

Malcolm Chisholm, Former Communities Minister at the Scottish Excecutive

“The SPFA are delighted to be associated with the red card campaign and commend the excellent work done over the last year. The success of the campaign is attested to by the various requests we receive from Fifpro members in Europe and the rest of the world, looking to learn from the Scottish SRTRC campaign model.”

Tony Higgins, Chair of Fifpro Anti-Racism Committee

“The Scottish Football Association is again proud to be associated with Show Racism the Red Card. The campaign has been highly successful in getting the anti-racist message over to many people living in Scotland but the greatest achievement has been the work carried-out with schools where Action Days together with the EIS led anti-racist Schools Competition have proved particularly successful, as was seen at the annual prize giving day at Hampden Park. The SFA together with the Show Racism the Red Card campaign will continue to tackle all forms of discrimination and ensure that football is enjoyed by everyone regardless of race, religion or cultural background.”

Tommy Breslin, Support Worker report INTRODUCTION

Imran Alam began his report for the 2005 Annual Review by stating that ‘never a dull day goes by when you are working for Show Racism the Red Card’, I fully understand Imran’s assertion. I feel that I have experienced the same demands and diversity in my workload as Imran was referring to. After working with SRTRC as a volunteer during the Fortnight of Action in 2005, I secured the post of Scottish Administrator in April 2006.

Grassroots We have continued to develop our involvement with grassroots football and sporting organisations. The Scottish Unity League took part in this years Fortnight of Action and SRTRC attended Glasgow Ansar’s SUL Cup Final win at the end of the 2005/06 season. The Active Life Club in the south side of Glasgow have increased their work with SRTRC and regularly organise anti- racist sporting events for young people. The ALC worked in partnership with SRTRC, Radio Awaz and Queens Park FC to organise coaching sessions and football tournaments, the replay of the winning match at one such tournament took place at half-time during a Queens Park v Dumbarton game at Hampden Park. In Edinburgh we have worked with the Adult Literacy Project to deliver anti-racist workshops at Tynecastle Stadium. Many of the attendees represented Scotland at the Homeless World Cup. We are also working with Meadowbank Community Football Club whom are addressing Education social exclusion through football. During the second half of the 2005/06 football season, I took part in delivering these workshops with Livingston FC, Motherwell FC and Kilmarnock FC. Each of these events reach up to 200 young people and the message is spread further by the students themselves on return to their schools through speaking about the days lesson at their school assembly.

“The City of Edinburgh Council sees SRTRC as a best practice model to tackle racism. The partnership work over the last two years has grown siginificantly and during 06/07 we have undertaken to deliver a more expansive range of anti racist activities. Many of these activities will be delivered through existing services and it is this "mainstreaming" approach, which will lay the foundations for future work between the two organisations.”

Nick Croft, Senior Policy Officer, City of Edinburgh Council

“Show Racism the Red Card - Scotland is an important member of the Football Against Racism in Europe (FARE) network. The organisation of the 'Fortnight of Action' during FAREs Action Week Against Racism in Football in October 2005 that covered events at all 42 professional football clubs and more than 100 grass-root events contributed on a high level to its trans-national character. We are looking forward to SRTRC's participation in the season 2006/07!”

Markus Pinter, Austrian anti-racism campaign Fair Play. Different Colours. One Game.

“Scotland's population is becoming evermore diverse, yet racism and discrimination continue to hold our country back by preventing some people from maximising their full social and economic potential. We all lose, as a result. Footballers are role models for many people in Scotland and by encouraging them to actively voice their opposition to prejudice, Show Racism the Red Card is making a key contribution to the battle against racism not only on the pitch but in schools, workplaces and other public environments across Scottish society.”

Zoobia Aslam, Scottish Campaign worker report INTRODUCTION

I took up post as campaign worker in Scotland in June. As part of my induction I accompanied the project co-ordinator to many of the meetings in order to establish valuable links and contacts for various projects that were taking off just as I began.

One of these projects was the partnership between City of Edinburgh Council and Show Racism the Red Card. The partnership agreement included: - delivery of the “Coaching with a conscience” workshops in 32 schools (approximately 960 children), Capacity building with 2 grassroots football teams from the city and the City of Edinburgh logo on the Squad posters. This was in return for City of Edinburgh becoming a major supporter of the Scottish Campaign. The partnership was officially launched at the Edinburgh City Chambers on the 19th of September. The launch was attended by senior council officials, Councillor Dougie Kerr, Players from both Hearts FC and Hibernian FC as well as many other relevant organisations and was a huge success. The partnership received much publicity due to the attendance of the press. The city of Edinburgh and Show Racism the Red Card partnership became the template that was then applied to many other regions these include East Renfrewshire and the Highlands, where the “Coaching with a conscience” project continues to be rolled out.

June 2005 SRTRC Refugee Week Challenge Cup Scotland's most prestigious multicultural 5-a-side football tournament was held at K7X complex, Rouken Glen Park, Glasgow. The event, now a highlight of Refugee Week, was a joint venture between Show Racism the Red Card, The Scottish Refugee Council, Glasgow City Council and Glasgow Ansar. Over 35 teams came from as wide an ethnic, religious and cultural mix as Glasgow offers and the event succeeded in its goal of promoting community cohesion, social responsibility, religious and racial tolerance whilst also showcasing BME footballing talent. The adult tournament was won by 'Jammy's' from Pollokshields, while in the junior cups Patchy's Allstars (u-14s) and Le Dream Team (u-17s) 14th September 2005 emerged victorious. 'Red card' video to go to every school in Scotland Snow Patrol frontman Gary Lightbody joined top footballers including Jamie McAllister (Hearts), Colin Nish (Kilmarnock) and Gordon Marshall (Motherwell) at the Scottish Parliament to launch Show Racism the Red Card's new Scottish-specific anti-racist video. The video, presented by Shereen Nanjiani of Scotland Today, features top players including Nigel Quashie, , Hamed Namouchi, Craig Gordon, Simon Brown, Brent Sancho, Craig Beattie, and managers Jim Jefferies and Walter Smith talking about racism and its consequences in Scottish football and society. Speaking at the event, Minister for Communities Malcolm Chisholm announced that the Executive has purchased a Show Racism the Red Card video, and accompanying education pack, for every primary, secondary and special needs school in Scotland: "Show Racism the Red Card is an important weapon in the fight against racism. The new video features Scottish football stars our children and young people look up to, so it's a great way of introducing these critically important issues in the classroom. Every school in Scotland will have a copy and it will help to break down the myths and stereotypes which lead to racism - so we can kick it out of Scotland for good".
