Find out more at castroledge.com Recent economic and political events in Europe’s autumn THE have highlighted the dangers of reckless over-spending, poor debt management and short-sighted, short-term MANAGERS’ leadership. The macro-economic solutions being worked on in Europe’s major capitals have micro-economic lessons VOICE in them. Short-term fixes do not bring about long-term solutions, stability and prosperity. “We hope 2012 The LMA’s Annual Management Conference held in October at the magnificent Emirates stadium, brought will not see a repeat football and business together for a day of discussion and debate on the subject of leadership. We heard from leaders of vast sums of from all walks of life, business, the armed forces, talent development and, of course, some of the LMA’s most money being wasted senior members. The delegates present gained a fascinating insight into from the game” the variety of challenges that leaders face and yet, despite the diversity of experiences on stage, a group of consistent themes appeared; the setting of realistic targets, the building of a winning culture; support from the top down and, most notably, clear and regular communication. All of the speakers pointed towards the value of building a long-term vision and sticking with it. As we approach the end of 2011, we have seen a year in which football clubs in England have spent a record amount on the payment of compensation and legal fees in the dismissal of managers across the leagues. This defies the principles of building for stability and success and, more worryingly, is an expense that clubs, certainly in the lower leagues, can ill afford. As the squeeze on finances, from the global institution to the man in the street, continues, we hope 2012 will not see a repeat of the vast sums of money being wasted from the game. The end of 2011 has also seen a uniting of the football family, in sadness, at the awful news of Gary Speed’s death. On behalf of the LMA and all of our members we offer our sincerest condolences and our full support to Gary’s family. We wish them strength in what must be the hardest of circumstances. Gary was highly respected and well liked, and it is a wonderful testament to the man and a legacy for his family, that the outpouring of grief has been so heartfelt and magnanimous is its praise of him. It wasn’t just that he was a great player and a very promising young manager, but also, that across the spectrum from fans to his peers he was much admired as a true professional, a ‘good bloke’ and gentleman of the game. Club History Organised football in Bangor dates from a meeting held in the city’s Magistrates' Rooms on 18 December 1876 – but not football as we might imagine because it was the handling variety that was first played in the city. It wasn’t until nearly a year later that it was decided to abandon rugby, to concentrate on association football, and to join the Football Association of Wales. The reason for the change of code? The number of players injured in that first experimental season! At that time, the club played at the Maes y Dref ground, at the lower end of Bangor’s High Street, and in the early years concentrated on playing challenge (friendly) fixtures and competing in the various cup competitions. Obviously, the club had no lack of ambition as on Easter Monday 1880, they took on the mighty Blackburn Rovers, giving a good account of themselves in a narrow 2 – 1 defeat. Nine years later, Bangor won the Welsh Cup for the first time, beating Northwich Victoria 2 – 1 at Wrexham before a crowd of 4,000, and in 1895-96 put on an even more impressive performance, beating north Wales giants Wrexham 3 – 0 at Llandudno to win football’s second-oldest cup competition for the second time. The Welsh Cup has been a favourite trophy of Bangor City over the years. City has won the trophy eight times – only Wrexham, Cardiff and Swansea have won it more often. Despite, or perhaps because of, City’s success in cup competitions, it became clear that the Maes y Dref ground was not up to standard, attracting complaints from visiting teams.

As a Geordie and a Newcastle United supporter, I always kept a keen interest on what was happening on Tyneside in the early stages of my career at Southampton and Blackburn. Although it was common for clubs to sign foreign players in the early 1990s, the market wasn’t saturated the way it is now, but it was certainly unusual for teams to invest in foreign goalkeepers. And Pavel’s arrival on Tyneside certainly caused a stir. He turned up on the club’s doorstep when it was struggling at the wrong end of the old Second Division. It must have been a baptism of fire for the young Czech goalkeeper. Not only did he have to adapt to a new style of football he had to settle in to a new town and culture.

This methodology has proved to be useful in measuring the economic value of intangible talent in professional sport and in other entertainment industries. In our estimations – and in the elaboration of the rankings – two elements are taken into consideration: popularity (degree of interest aroused between the fans and the general public) and media value (the level of attention that the mass media pays). The calculations may be made at specific points in time during a season, or accumulating the news generated during a particular period: weeks, months, years, etc. Additionally, the homogeneity amongst the measurements allows for a comparison of the media value status of individuals, teams, institutions, etc. Together with the measurements and rankings, our database allows us to conduct analyses on a wide variety of economic and business problems: estimates of the market value (or “fair value”) of players’ transfer fees; calculation of the brand value of individuals, teams and leagues; valuation of the economic return from alliances between sponsors; image rights contracts of athletes and teams; and a great deal more.
