We aim to combat racism through enabling role models, who are predominately but not exclusively footballers, to present an anti-racist message to young people and others. Show Racism The Red Card acknowledges that racism changes, as do the experiences of Black and Minority Ethnic communities in the UK. Our message and activities therefore need to be able to respond to such changes as and when appropriate. We achieve this through: • Producing educational resources • Developing activities to encourage people, including young people, to challenge racism • In parts of the UK, challenging racism in the game of football and other sports. Introduction This project summary should be used in conjunction with the campaign DVD which accompanies it. This by Ged Grebby – Project Coordinator DVD includes video footage of our campaign, our Welcome to another first for our campaign: A Project latest Annual Reviews and guides for Councils and Summary. • How to Be a Footballer
CONTENTS Cover About the Book About the Author Title Page Prologue Dressing-rooms Superstitions Cars Defenders Tattoos Training grounds Clothes Volleys Team bus Droughts Celebrations Interviews Houses Transfers Music Abuse Headers Haircuts Goalkeepers Going Out Champions League vs FA Cup Endorsements Hotels Social media Gerrard Picture Section Acknowledgements Photo Credits Copyright ABOUT THE BOOK You become a footballer because you love football. And then you are a footballer, and you’re suddenly in the strangest, most baffling world of all. A world where one team-mate comes to training in a bright red suit with matching top-hat, cane and glasses, without any actual glass in them, and another has so many sports cars they forget they have left a Porsche at the train station. Even when their surname is incorporated in the registration plate. So walk with me into the dressing-room, to find out which players refuse to touch a football before a game, to discover why a load of millionaires never have any shower-gel, and to hear what Cristiano Ronaldo says when he looks at himself in the mirror. ABOUT THE AUTHOR First things first: yes I am very tall, no the weather isn’t different up here, and no I don’t play basketball. Glad that’s out the way. I’ve been a professional footballer for 20 years, have 42 England caps, have scored over 100 Premier League goals and hold the record for the most headed goals in Premier League history. I’ve been at a fair few clubs too, including Queens Park Rangers, Portsmouth, Aston Villa, Norwich, Southampton, Liverpool, Portsmouth, Tottenham Hotspur, Stoke and England.

  • Srtrc Hall of Fame Ceremony Downing Street 12Th May 2008
Introduction Ged Grebby UK Project Co-ordinator The 2007-8 season was officially the most successful season in the history of our campaign with more posters produced, events at clubs and community education work than ever before. We are now working on our Annual Review for this period, which we hope to have finished for July 2008. This newsletter can only give a flavour of the work we have carried out since our last newsletter in Leroy Rosenior and Robbie Earle presented the December. We managed to cap a brilliant season for our Hall of Fame Ceremony. anti-racist campaign with a fantastic event at 10 Downing Street with our patrons, supporters and sponsors. Work is progressing well on our four new films: 1. A film in conjunction with Fifpro the international players’ union called “Racism and the Beautiful game”. This DVD will be used by players’ unions around the world to promote ideas on how football can combat racism. 2. A film and education pack to combat the growth of Islamophobia in society. 3. An updated version of our Show Racism the Red Card DVD. 4. A new Scottish Show Racism the Red Card DVD. The aim is to have all four films finished and ready to launch for the beginning of the new season in August. We have interviewed the following players and ex- players: Thierry Henry, Lillian Thuram, Samuel Eto’o, Gareth Southgate, Ryan Giggs, Wes Brown, Brian McClair, Gordon Taylor, Robert Earnshaw, Danny Gabbidon, Leroy Sol Campbell and Fabulous Flournoy were Rosenior, Freddie Eastwood, Jermaine Easter, Gareth Bale, amongst the guests at 10 Downing Street.
