Srtrc Hall of Fame Ceremony Downing Street 12Th May 2008 Introduction Ged Grebby UK Project Co-ordinator The 2007-8 season was officially the most successful season in the history of our campaign with more posters produced, events at clubs and community education work than ever before. We are now working on our Annual Review for this period, which we hope to have finished for July 2008. This newsletter can only give a flavour of the work we have carried out since our last newsletter in Leroy Rosenior and Robbie Earle presented the December. We managed to cap a brilliant season for our Hall of Fame Ceremony. anti-racist campaign with a fantastic event at 10 Downing Street with our patrons, supporters and sponsors. Work is progressing well on our four new films: 1. A film in conjunction with Fifpro the international players’ union called “Racism and the Beautiful game”. This DVD will be used by players’ unions around the world to promote ideas on how football can combat racism. 2. A film and education pack to combat the growth of Islamophobia in society. 3. An updated version of our Show Racism the Red Card DVD. 4. A new Scottish Show Racism the Red Card DVD. The aim is to have all four films finished and ready to launch for the beginning of the new season in August. We have interviewed the following players and ex- players: Thierry Henry, Lillian Thuram, Samuel Eto’o, Gareth Southgate, Ryan Giggs, Wes Brown, Brian McClair, Gordon Taylor, Robert Earnshaw, Danny Gabbidon, Leroy Sol Campbell and Fabulous Flournoy were Rosenior, Freddie Eastwood, Jermaine Easter, Gareth Bale, amongst the guests at 10 Downing Street. Avram Grant and Peter Kenyon of Chelsea FC came to show their support. As you can see we have had an excellent response from footballers, football clubs and managers and the prospect of having all these new resources available to us with education packs by September 2008 means this is going to be a very exciting year for our organisation. My thanks go to all our staff, volunteers, management committee and patrons who have worked so hard to make this season such a successful one for our campaign. The last few months saw us deliver our first ever football club workshops with Swansea City and Welsh Premier League side Welshpool FC. Both the workshops were held at local schools and saw first team players sharing their views and experiences of racism with young people. We have had a tremendous response from the football clubs in Wales and we will look to broaden our events by holding workshops with Rugby clubs in Wales next season. The campaign has taken on a new Information and Support worker for Wales to assist in developing the work in Wales. Jason Webber has been working for the Football in the Community department at Merthyr Tydfil FC for the past few seasons, he is currently working towards Level 3 (B Licence) UEFA coaching award and will assist us towards increasing physical activity as well as adopting new ways of delivering our anti-racism Leroy Rosenior visits Barry Comprehensive school to spread workshops. Sedangkan kondisi The Blues masih lebih baik.

  • Effectiveness of In-Season Manager Changes in English Premier League Football
Effectiveness of in-season manager changes in English Premier League football Lucas M. Besters*, Jan C. van Ours** and Martin A. van Tuijl*** May 9, 2016 Abstract We analyze the performance effects of in-season manager changes in English Premier League (EPL) football during the seasons 2000/01 – 2014/15. We find that some managerial changes are successful, while others are counterproductive. On average, performance does not improve following a managerial replacement. The successfulness of managerial turnover depends on specific highly unpredictable circumstances, as we illustrate through case-studies. Introduction Football is very popular worldwide. In Europe and Latin-America, football has entertained crowds for more than one century. In other continents, interest has increased in the past decades. Top players now move to the football leagues of Australia, Japan and the United States, and, more recently, also to the league of the People’s Republic of China. Both clubs and national associations employ top-class managers from all around the globe to coach their squads. Furthermore, top clubs have an enormous global fan base. The great interest in football is not restricted to fans seeking entertainment. Professional sports, in general, and professional football, in particular, have proven to be a fruitful soil for scientific research.

  • Football Discipline As a Barometer of Racism in English Sport and Society, 2004-2007: Spatial Dimensions
Middle States Geographer, 2012, 44:27-35 FOOTBALL DISCIPLINE AS A BAROMETER OF RACISM IN ENGLISH SPORT AND SOCIETY, 2004-2007: SPATIAL DIMENSIONS M.T. Sullivan*1, J. Strauss*2 and D.S. Friedman*3 1Department of Geography Binghamton University Binghamton, New York 13902 2Dept. of Psychology Macalester College 1600 Grand Avenue St. Paul, MN 55105 3MacArthur High School Old Jerusalem Road Levittown, NY 11756 ABSTRACT: In 1990 Glamser demonstrated a significant difference in the disciplinary treatment of Black and White soccer players in England. The current study builds on this observation to examine the extent to which the Football Association’s antiracism programs have changed referee as well as fan behavior over the past several years. Analysis of data involving 421 players and over 10,500 matches – contested between 2003-04 and 2006-07 – indicates that a significant difference still exists in referees’ treatment of London-based Black footballers as compared with their White teammates at non-London matches (p=.004). At away matches in other London stadia, the difference was not significant (p=.200). Given the concentration of England’s Black population in the capital city, this suggests that it is fan reaction/overreaction to Black players’ fouls and dissent that unconsciously influences referee behavior. Keywords: racism, sport, home field advantage, referee discipline, match location INTRODUCTION The governing bodies of international football (FIFA) and English football (The FA or Football Association) have certainly tried to address racism in sport – a “microcosm of society.” In April of 2006, FIFA expelled five Spanish fans from a Zaragoza stadium and fined each 600 Euros for monkey chants directed towards Cameroonian striker Samuel Eto’o.
