As the time of origin could not be ascertained, the ancient glory of Tamil race is explained by the poet Iyanaridanar (Iadhçjdh®) the author Duty expects not anything in return Just as rain expects none. Kural 211 1 of “Puraporul Vennbamalai” (òw¥bghUŸ bt©ghkhiy) in the stanza that follows. It’s no wonder nor amazement to know That Tamils were the ancient race, Primordial That it drove off the faulsities and flaws And accrued name and fame each day Amongst humanity born with sword Even before the emergence of soil After the hard palm – sized rubbles peeped up From the ocean wave that lashes around the earth. “bghŒafy ehS« òfœéis¤jš v‹éa¥gh« itaf« ngh®¤j ta§bfhèÚ®- ifafy¡ f‰nwh‹¿ k©njh‹wh¡ fhy¤nj thbshL K‰nwh‹¿ _¤j Fo” The wealth of the truly wise is like The brimming village tank. Kural 216 3 Mahakavi Bharathiyar recites the ancient greatness of India in these following lines; these could very well be attributed and aptly quoted for the ancient greatness of Mother Tamil too: “Such is the nature of our Mother Tamil That even the most learned intellectuals Who know all ancient happenings in detail Could not know the time of origin of her! “bjh‹W ãfœªj jid¤J« cz®ªÂL Nœfiy thz®fS« - ÏtŸ v‹W ÃwªjtŸ v‹Wzuhj ÏašÃdsh« v§fŸ jhŒ!” Literature such as Ettuthogai, Pathuppattu and Pathinenn Keezh Kanaku are the glowing evidences for the youthfulness and vigour of ancient Tamil. These works of subjective poetry, objective poetry and ethics (Agam, Puram and Aram) are the cultural Wealth of a generous man is like a herbal tree That becomes an unfailing remedy. Kural 217 4 archives which should be in the houses of all Tamils, cultural dedication of our great grandfathers, traditional treasure thoughts of our ancestors, historical glories of Tamils who have led their life with greatness, Disciplines of Ainthinais both subjective and objective, bridges of relationship through which life is led in all ages and properties of ever existing Tamil which has no match. Tamils have to safeguard, read, protect and appreciate this rare treasure in their houses. Among the collection of works which come under the division Pathinen Keezhkanakku (gÂbd© Ñœ¡fz¡F), Naaladiyar (ehyoah®), Nanmanikadigai (eh‹kâ¡foif), Inna Narpathu(Ï‹dh eh‰gJ), Iniyavai Narpathu(Ïåait eh‰gJ), Aindhinai Arupathu(IªÂiz mWgJ), Muppal (K¥ghš), Thirikadugam (ÂçfLf«), Aasarakkovai (Mrhu¡ nfhit), Pazhamozhinanooru (gHbkhê eh}W), Sirupanchamoolam (ÁWgŠr_y«), Mudumozhikanchi (KJbkhê¡ fhŠÁ), Elathi (VyhÂ) are coming under subjective poetry. Giving to the poor alone is real charity All else aim at recompense only. Kural 221 5 Kar Narpathu (fh® eh‰gJ), Ainthinai Aimbathu (IªÂiz I«gJ), Ainthinai Ezhupathu (IªÂiz vGgJ), Thinaimozhi Aimbathu (Âizbkhê I«gJ), Thinaimalai Nootraimbathu (Âizkhiy ü‰iw«gJ) are coming under objective poetry. Kalavazhi Narpathu (fstê eh‰gJ) deals mainly on war among the objective poetry. All these works of ethics, are mainly didactic in nature, eventhough these creations have three primary divisions namely virtue, wealth and love. Thiruvalluvar was the first poet who wrote on people while all others were writing on the rulers and God. Ancient Tamil literature proves the old saying that “literature is eternal”. Tamil is hailed as one of the greatest classical languages of the world. The western scholars like Relieving the killing hunger of the needy Is the safest treasury of the wealthy. Kural 226 6 Veeramamunivar alias Beschi, G.U.Pope, etc have stated with awe and amazement that no other literature all over the world is like the Literature of Subjective Poetry (mf¤Jiw Ïy¡»a§fŸ) in Tamil. No other language in the world has numerous devotional literature as in Tamil to purify the minds of the human beings. “While English is the language of trade, French is the language of mediation, German is the language of philosophy, Tamil is the language of devotion” says Thaninayagam Adigalar. For the promotion and development of Tamil language which have all the inborn characters as narrated above such as sweetness, simplicity, greatness and grandeur, the Tamil Development Department under the able and benign leadership of Hon’ble Chief Minister of Tami Nadu Puratchi Thalaivi Amma is undertaking several schemes and projects to add glorify to Tamil. Nothing in the world remains undying Except fame unique and towering. Kural 233 7 TAMIL DEVELOPMENT DEPARTMENT Tamil language has ancient literary treasure among the languages of the world and it is on par with Greek, Latin and Chinese in heritage and greatness. No one can deny that Tamil language which has youthfulness, sweetness, antiquity and divinity has ancient glory on one side and grows with the vigor of youth hood on the other side. The Government under the leadership of the Hon’ble Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu Puratchi Thalaivi Amma is deeply committed in the development of Tamil language and is implementing various schemes for the same. This department originated in 1957 as the official language Inspection committee with the aim of improving the application and usage of official language Tamil in the administration of Government. Later on, from 1968 onwards, this was restructured and emerged as Tamil Development Department. Inspection activities relating to Heaven will never acclaim even the gods But men on earth with lasting laurels. Kural 234 8 Official Language Implementation Scheme and other functions relating to Tamil Development are being undertaken by this Department. Implementation of Official Language Scheme Inspection In accordance with the enactment of Tamil Official Language Act and with an objective that our mother tongue, Tamil should be actively used in the day-to-day functioning of all the departments of Government of Tamil Nadu. Inspection works on the implementation of official language Tamil is being undertaken. Inspections are undertaken by the Secretary to Government, Tamil Development Department, in the case of offices of the Departments of Secretariat. In the case of the offices of Head of Departments, Boards and Government undertakings Head of Departments of Local bodies by the Director of Tamil Development, in the case Men of mercy who guard all beings Are free from fear of evils. Kural 244 9 of the offices at Regional level by the Deputy Directors of Tamil Development and in the case of other offices by the Assistant Directors of Tamil Development, general guidance are given for correction, rectification of faults, mistakes and completion of inadequacies respectively. Seminars on Official Language Seminars on Official Language are conducted in all districts every year with the view to implement the scheme of Official Language in better ways. In the year 2013-14, seminars on Official Language were conducted in 32 Districts at the cost of Rs.6,40,000/- (Rupees Six Lakh and Forty Thousand only) at the rate of Rs.20,000/- for each district. Workshops on Official Language Workshops on Official Language are conducted for two days in each district at the cost of Rs.30,000/- on the Miseries are not for those with merciful heart This wind-blown world bears witness to it. Training on Official Language Training on official language is given every year to the staff of all departments in Chennai District in the Directorate of Tamil Development once in two months. Moreover, training on Official Language is also given in Bhavanisagar Govt. Staff Training Institute and in the departments of Police, Co-operation and Public Works by the officers of Tamil Development Department. Prizes for the Best Drafts and Notes With the view to encourage motive and also to give incentives to the Government staff who are implementing Official Language scheme with keen interest and devotion, prizes are given every year to Government staff who prepared best drafts and notes in Tamil.

It has been pointed out by great historians, the mutual disunity that prevailed among the native rulers in India, was the main reason for the slavery of the Indian soil. However a galaxy of thinkers, writers, poets, philosophers and others who had national liberation only as their heart throbs, joined together and vowed to overthrow the British rule from India. The services of a few native rulers and chieftains who raised the banner of liberation, opposing the British rule in India is noteworthy. All of us want to belong, and we know, at a deep instinctive level, that we “be- long” at home, the first and basic social unit that we get to know. This need expands to the neighbourhood, community, society, and our country. There was a time when a Tamil poet sang that “all the world is mine and all are my family,” and Anwar picks his title from here, because today we have degenerated into different circles of “Us” Kilakkarai Jumma Palli is one of the finest Dravidian style mosques.     Sangam Age drishtiias.com/printpdf/sangam-age-1 Introduction The period roughly between the 3rd century B.C. and 3rd century A.D. in South India (the area lying to the south of river Krishna and Tungabhadra) is known as Sangam Period. It has been named after the Sangam academies held during that period that flourished under the royal patronage of the Pandya kings of Madurai. At the sangams eminent scholars assembled and functioned as the board of censors and the choicest literature was rendered in the nature of anthologies. These literary works were the earliest specimens of Dravidian literature. According to the Tamil legends, there were three Sangams (Academy of Tamil poets) held in the ancient South India popularly called Muchchangam. The First Sangam, is believed to be held at Madurai, attended by gods and legendary sages. No literary work of this Sangam is available. The Second Sangam was held at Kapadapuram, only Tolkappiyam survives from this. The Third Sangam was also held at Madurai. A few of these Tamil literary works have survived and are a useful sources to reconstruct the history of the Sangam period. Sangam Literature: Major source giving details of Sangam Age The Sangam literature includes Tolkappiyam, Ettutogai, Pattuppattu, Pathinenkilkanakku, and two epics named – Silappathikaram and Manimegalai . Tolkappiyam was authored by Tolkappiyar and is considered the earliest of Tamil literary work. Though it is a work on Tamil grammar but it also provides insights on the political and socio-economic conditions of the time. Ettutogai (Eight Anthologies) consist of eight works – Aingurunooru, Narrinai, Aganaooru, Purananooru, Kuruntogai, Kalittogai, Paripadal and Padirruppatu.
