    Suggested attractions & activities for Kanchanaburi Featuring WWII History, Local Way of Life & the Wild Located approximately 140kms or about 2.5hr drive west of Bangkok, Kanchanaburi boasts some of Thailand’s most beautiful waterfalls in the jungles and some of the world-renowned WWII sites: Bridge over the River Kwai, the Death Railway and Hellfire Pass. In addition to that visitors can also immerse themselves in a slow and peaceful life of the Mon villagers at Sangkhla Buri village near border to Myanmar. Accommodations on offer here range from raft house on the river in the jungle, homestay in a local village and camping in the national park. For visitors who do not have much time, a quick stop at Don Rak or Kanchanaburi War Cemetery i.e. an important WWII memorial site where the prisoners of war who had died while building the railway were buried and Thailand - Myanmar Railway Centre next to it will give you an overview of how cruel the situation was during the war. Another must see attraction is the River Kwai Bridge. If you have some time, take a Death Railway train from River Kwai Bridge. Seats on the left offer better view but must be reserved when purchase the tickets. This steel bridge is one of most important historical landmarks and WWII memorials in Thailand as it was part of the “Death Railway” lines. The train slowly goes across the river, through some lush jungles then on the edge of the cliff along the river. Get off at Tham Krasae Cave where it marks the start of the long viaduct by the cliff built by the Prisoners of War during WWII as part of the Death Railway.

    TRAVEL My Kwai… AN UNABRIDGED ACCOUNT OF TRAVELLING THE THAI RIVER REGION THAT INSPIRED A MOVIE LEGEND bout 120 kilometres northwest of Bangkok, nestled against the Myanmar border, lies the province of Kanchanaburi. The province’s capital town – perhaps a little confusingly, also known as Kanchanaburi – is home to some 30,000 residents and swollen all-year-round with a never-ending tide of tourists. Notoriously, the province is home to the Death Railway – the Burma-Thailand line built by prisoners-of-war under the watchful eyes of the Japanese occupying forces of World War II. ATo many, it will be best known for its starring role in The Bridge On the River Kwai, the 1957 movie that told the tale of the construction of this infamous project. The movie, though, was actually filmed in Sri Lanka – although The Deer Hunter, Michael Cimino’s 1978 Academy Award-winning film, genuinely was filmed here. Over the years, historians – and politicians of various hues – have taken issue with The Bridge On the River Kwai’s take on this controversial episode. Range extensions are reported for Diorygma soozanum (from Thailand) and Ramboldia haematites (from Taiwan). Graphina reniformis var. subasteroidea is an Acanthothecis species of uncertain specific allocation. A key for the identification of Ramboldia species in Thailand is presented. Key words — Graphidaceae, Lecanoraceae, Physciaceae, Pilocarpaceae Introduction Interest in tropical lichens has increased significantly during the last decade, resulting in many new monographs and contributions to the tropical lichen biota [e.g. Aptroot et al. (2008, 2009), Archer (2007), Bungartz et al. (2007), Cáceres (2007), McCarthy (ed., 2009), Frisch & Kalb (2006), Galloway (2007), Kalb et al. (2004), Lücking (2008), Lücking & Caceres (2004), Marbach (2000), Moberg (2004), Rivas Plata et al. (2006), Sipman (2002)]. These (and many more) have extended our knowledge of lichenized fungi considerably. Nevertheless we are still far from having a complete inventory of these organisms occurring in tropical countries, and can only approach this goal step by step and this paper provides a further small step. Materials and methods Most of the material used for study is housed in the private herbarium of the senior author (KK), but specimens from herbaria such as B, G, H, M, RAMK and S were investigated for comparison.

The proposed project activity is being implemented by the Papop Renewable Company Limited (“Papop”) as a builder, operator, transfer scheme, which will be handed over to TSML after a period of 9 years. The TSML distillery produces alcohol spirits and as a part of the production process generates large amounts of wastewater, which has high organic matter content. Currently, wastewater is treated in an anaerobic lagoon and the anaerobic conditions lead to the production of biogas that is released directly to the atmosphere.
