100 Families That Changed the World JOSEP TÀPIES • ELENA SAN ROMÁN • ÁGUEDA GIL LÓPEZ 100 FAMILIES THAT CHANGED THE WORLD Family Businesses and Industrialization “If there is one quality that centenarian firms have in common, it is that they have known how to adapt to the many circumstances and challenges they have been faced with. Family businesses are usua- lly managed with a long-term vision, and there can be no doubt that the companies featured in this book provide a clear example of how to achieve this.” José María Serra, chairman of Grupo Catalana Occidente “This book is an effective tool for better understanding the manage- rial and industrial development of family businesses. This is undoub- tedly an objective approach that allows the reader to learn about the key factors that, in each case, have been fundamental to the suc- cess of centenarian companies. Moreover, it is a work of study and analysis that reveals the best practices of each company in an effort to keep its activity going throughout the years.” Tomás Osborne, chairman of the Osborne Group */3%04±0)%3s%,%.!3!.2/-£.s£'5%$!'),,0%: 'BNJMJFT5IBU$IBOHFEUIF8PSME 'BNJMZ#VTJOFTTFTBOE*OEVTUSJBMJ[BUJPO 100 Families That Changed the World Family Businesses and Industrialization Josep Tàpies, Elena San Román, Águeda Gil All rights reserved. Box 616 6200 MD Maastricht The Netherlands tel: +31-43-3883636 fax: +31-43-3884878 e-mail: [email protected] Prepared for the Business Library Review. Abstract The recent Bertelsmann buy-out of Springer ends 157 years of fiercely independent scholarly publishing. On Tuesday February 16, 1999, the European Commission decided that, although both companies are active in professional publishing, the takeover does not raise any competitive objections because they have different focuses in that (professional) market. "The market share increase through the merger is limited", the Commission said. "Consequently, the concentration has been declared compatible with the common market."1 This review article recalls the formidable history of this science publisher and its role in helping establish entire fields of science and technology. In particular, the role of this independent privately- held publishing company in confronting attempts infringing upon academic freedom is being emphasized. JEL codes: I28, L41, N44 keyword: science publishing 1 Wall Street Journal Europe, Wednesday, February 17, 1999, p. 5 On February 16, 1999, the European Commission allowed Bertelsmann's taking over the science publisher Springer-Verlag. Thus, a 157-year old privately-held company ceased to exist as an independent entity, a force that had shaped the landscape of scholarly publishing. Bertelsmann AG is the world's largest book publisher, and it is among the world's largest media companies.

  • The Film Music of Edmund Meisel (1894–1930)
The Film Music of Edmund Meisel (1894–1930) FIONA FORD, MA Thesis submitted to The University of Nottingham for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy DECEMBER 2011 Abstract This thesis discusses the film scores of Edmund Meisel (1894–1930), composed in Berlin and London during the period 1926–1930. In the main, these scores were written for feature-length films, some for live performance with silent films and some recorded for post-synchronized sound films. The genesis and contemporaneous reception of each score is discussed within a broadly chronological framework. Meisel‘s scores are evaluated largely outside their normal left-wing proletarian and avant-garde backgrounds, drawing comparisons instead with narrative scoring techniques found in mainstream commercial practices in Hollywood during the early sound era. The narrative scoring techniques in Meisel‘s scores are demonstrated through analyses of his extant scores and soundtracks, in conjunction with a review of surviving documentation and modern reconstructions where available. ii Acknowledgements I would like to thank the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC) for funding my research, including a trip to the Deutsches Filminstitut, Frankfurt. The Department of Music at The University of Nottingham also generously agreed to fund a further trip to the Deutsche Kinemathek, Berlin, and purchased several books for the Denis Arnold Music Library on my behalf. The goodwill of librarians and archivists has been crucial to this project and I would like to thank the staff at the following institutions: The University of Nottingham (Hallward and Denis Arnold libraries); the Deutsches Filminstitut, Frankfurt; the Deutsche Kinemathek, Berlin; the BFI Library and Special Collections; and the Music Librarian of the Het Brabants Orkest, Eindhoven.
