The goals ofMamlūk Studies Review are to take stock of scholarship devoted to the Mamluk era, nurture communication within the field, and promote further research by encouraging the critical discussion of all aspects of this important medieval Islamic polity. The journal includes both articles and reviews of recent books. Submissions of original work on any aspect of the field are welcome, although the editorial board will periodically is- sue volumes devoted to specific topics and themes.Mamlūk Studies Review also solicits edited texts and translations of shorter Arabic source materials (waqf deeds, letters,fatawa and the like), and encourages discussions of Mamluk era artifacts (pottery, coins, etc.) that place these resources in wider contexts. An article or book review inMamlūk Studies Review makes its author a contributor to the scholarly literature and should add to a constructive dialogue. Questions regarding style should be resolved through reference to the MSR Editorial and Style Guide (http://mamluk. uchicago.edu/msr.html) and The Chicago Manual of Style. Transliterated Middle Eastern languages should conform to the system utilized by the Library of Congress (see the conversion chart near the end of this volume). Craig Prize, carrying a cash award of $1,000, is given annually by Mamlūk Studies Review for the best dissertation on a topic related to the Mamluk Sultanate submitted to an American or Canadian university during the preced- ing calendar year. Literary History at the Limits of Comparison 151 (Hakan Özkan) Recent Publications 157 Introduction: Representations of Women in the Mamluk Period AAntAnell nAntonell Antonella Ghersetti Representations of Women in the Mamluk Period Representations of Women in the Mamluk Period In the pre-modern Arab-Islamic world the act of writing significantly contributed to establishing and perpetuating a culture of gender, especially perspicuous in images and representations of women and men found in texts where stereotyped physical and moral features are portrayed. Gender relationships find their place particularly in what we could define as normative literature on sex and marriage (adab al-nikāḥ), but also in works of a wider scope (e.g., adab anthologies) that di- 10.6082/3v7a-f634 rectly or indirectly describe interpersonal relationships. From idealization of the URI perfect wife to demonization of the cunning and ugly woman, passing through images of women being at the service of men’s pleasure, women’s representations in the literary production generally seem to be the result of a dominant, mascu- line voice and the expression of men’s interests, mainly focused on the feminine body and personality as serviceable commodities. The panel “Representations of Women in the Mamluk period,” presented at the Second Conference of the School of Mamlūk Studies (Liège, June 25–27, 2015), was conceived as a way of investigat- ing representations of women in the textual production of the Mamluk period, aiming at better understanding gender relations in Mamluk society.

Byler Chair of the Supervisory Committee: Sasha Su-Ling Welland, Department of Gender, Women, and Sexuality Studies This study argues that Uyghurs, a Turkic-Muslim group in contemporary Northwest China, and the city of Ürümchi have become the object of what the study names “terror capitalism.” This argument is supported by evidence of both the way state-directed economic investment and security infrastructures (pass-book systems, webs of technological surveillance, urban cleansing processes and mass internment camps) have shaped self-representation among Uyghur migrants and Han settlers in the city. It analyzes these human engineering and urban planning projects and the way their effects are contested in new media, film, television, photography and literature. It finds that this form of capitalist production utilizes the discourse of terror to justify state investment in a wide array of policing and social engineering systems that employs millions of state security workers. The project also presents a theoretical model for understanding how Uyghurs use cultural production to both build and refuse the development of this new economic formation and accompanying forms of gendered, ethno-racial violence.

Iranian Contribution to the Art of Islamic Calligraphy The art of Islamic Calligraphy is considered to be one of the highest forms of artistic expression in the entire Muslim world. In view of its widespread use even-to-day, only second to the Roman Alphabet, the Arabic script which is the mother of all Islamic scripts, was developed at a much later date. If we compare the kind of script used by the nomadic Arabs of Hijaz before the appearance of Islam with the great progress it made in the wake of Islam and the revelation of the Holy Quran we discern on it the tremendous influence of Islam—the discipline, beauty and elegance which it lent to this script. A comparison of the two inscriptions written in Nabataean script (The Pre-Islamic script of Arabs) fig. I & 2 first dated 250 A.D. and the second dated 568 A.D. will reveal how little change has taken place in course of about 300 years until the birth of Islam. Immediately after the advent of Islam we witness the invention of the Kufic script. Unlike the primitive Nabataean script, the Kufic, an early Islamic script has a strong geometrical structure (Fig. 3). It has based mainly on long horizontal and short vertical lines with very minor curves. The Kufic later developed into various decorative styles.

The corpus was obtained from the published dictionaries of Hausa together with additional material I gathered during a research visit to Northern Nigeria. A thorough examination of Hausa dictionaries yielded a large number of words of Arabic origin. The authors had not recognized all of these, and it was in no way their purpose to indicate whether the loan was direct or indirect; the dictionaries do not always give the Arabic origin, and sometimes their indications are inaccurate. The whole of my corpus amounts to some 4000 words, which are presented as an appendix.

ISBN 84-249-2344-8 This abundantly and beautifully illustrated and well-pro- duced book is one of the last Álvaro Galmes de Fuentes wrote before his death in February 2003. In his preliminary note (31 January 2001), he tells us why he wrote this book. The project started with his inaugural lecture for the Oviedo University 1967 academic year about the Aljamiado (Span- ish Muslim) work El libro de las batallas (‘The Book of the Battles’), in which he made a comparison between the Chris- tian and the Arabic traditions of chivalry. The booklet con- taining this lecture and other lectures on the subject attracted great interest from other scholars, Spanish as well as Italian, among the latter including Francesco Gabrieli and Enrico Cerulli. Galmes went further along this path, first editing the text of El libro de las batallas and then writing this book on the comparison of chivalric motifs in Romance and Arabic literatures. In two pages, Galmes underlines that the aim of his book is not to depict the origins of the Romance medieval epics, but to study the comparison of the motifs of both literatures, although one cannot deny that it is obvious that Arabic cul- ture, which was superior at the time, may have had some influence on Romance epics.     076-097 224720 CS6.indd 76 2016-09-02 1:55 PM Shaping the Word of God: Visual Codifications of the Qur’an between 1000 and 1700 ¡¢£¤ ¥¦§§¡¨ Today, a printed copy of the Qur’an looks disnctly unlike any other pe of book wrien in Arabic script.1 e Holy Book of Islam, the Word of God for Muslims, oen is published in a single volume, with a dense display of text on the page and a limited selecon of standardized fonts: naskh for the text, thuluth for the chapter (sura) tles. e modern, mass-produced mushaf (plural: masahif), the Arabic word for a wrien copy of the Qur’an, is a singular book object, unique in sle and format. When Muslims and non-Muslims alike are asked to picre the Qur’an, oen what comes to mind is an austere book, with both text and decorave elements rendered in black and white. Such elements include the opening double-page spread with the first sura on the right and the beginning of the second chapter on the le page. All the subsequent chapter tles are presented in framed and decorated headings (unwan). e text on every page is also enclosed in a simple framing border. roughout the book, inscribed medallions in the margins indicate divisions of the text. Appearing oen, though not always, are numerical markers of the thir-secon divisions (juz; plural: ajza’), and more occasionally their subdivisions: rub‘ (quarter), nisf (half), thalatha arba‘ (three- fourths) as well as the fourteen indicaons of prosaon (sajda). Finally, small, idencal devices inserted in the text separate verses (aya) and present the posion number of the preceding aya.
