Baker M.A., Bowling Green State University, 2000 M.A., Karl Franzens University, Graz, Austria, 1998 Committee Chair: Katharina Gerstenberger ABSTRACT “The Return of the Child Exile: Re-enactment of Childhood Trauma in Jewish Life- Writing and Documentary Film” is a study of the literary responses of writers who were Jewish children in hiding and exile during World War II and of documentary films on the topic of refugee children and children in exile. The goal of this dissertation is to investigate the relationships between trauma, memory, fantasy and narrative in a close reading/viewing of different forms of Jewish life-writing and documentary film by means of a scientifically informed approach to childhood trauma. Chapter 1 discusses the reception of Binjamin Wilkomirski’s Fragments (1994), which was hailed as a paradigmatic traumatic narrative written by a child survivor before it was discovered to be a fictional text based on the author’s invented Jewish life-story. -

The fifth meeting of the Expert Working Group for Mutual Exchange and Deliveries of AIS data (AIS EWG) was held in Copenhagen, Denmark, on 29-30 April 2003, on the basis of the report of the fourth meeting of the Expert Working Group (AIS EWG 4/2003, document no. 4/Rev.1). 2. The meeting was attended by delegations from Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Germany, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Russia and Sweden. Mr. Terje Alling and Mr. Kjell Arne Aarmo from the Norwegian National Coastal Administration participated as invited guests. The list of participants is attached as Annex 1. 3. Mr. Benny Pettersson from Sweden, Chairman of the Expert Working Group, chaired the meeting. Ms. Serpil Pedersen, Assistant at the Royal Danish Administration of Navigation and Hydrography, acted as Secretary of the meeting. 4. The agenda for the meeting is attached as Annex 2. 5. In his opening remarks the Chairman referred to the last meeting in Finland and to the accomplishments made during this meeting. The Chairman further informed that Sweden will update the AIS Network SW in the middle of May and will be able to deliver data in IEC format hereafter. The Chairman also stated that the action plan and time schedule adopted at the last meeting should be reconsidered during the fifth meeting in order to assess whether or not these can be fulfilled. -

INTRODUCTION d You know that city so unshakeable and still, Where no one treats your ears ill, Where not every breath of wind makes you wholly Nervous, furious and full of folly? You know that city? That way! That way I’d like to escape with the next express train! —‘Moderne Ballade’, 1886 This is the first part of a poem titled ‘Modern Ballad’, published in the humor- ous magazine Der Floh in 1886.1 The author is, as in most humorous texts and pictures published in magazines like Der Floh, unknown. The signature below the ballad says only ‘Ein Wiener’ – a Viennese. Yet, although the identity of the writer of the ‘Modern Ballad’ is unknown, the contemporary middle-class audi- ence would certainly have immediately recognized the lines parodied here; they come from one of the most famous poems by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, ‘Mignon’s Song’.2 However, Goethe’s classic text, which refers to Italy, is here radically transformed. In the modern ballad, the speaker is longing for a city still and unshakeable, in order to take an express train to get there. This ironic paradox cannot be fully understood without the framework of humour. This inquiry into popular humour in Vienna between 1857 and 1890 is an attempt to discover why the city and its urban life in the late nineteenth century generated so much laughter, and how humour was used as an interpreta- tive framework with which to deal with the changing city environment. In Vienna in the second half of the nineteenth century, when the urbanization and transformation of the city space were making the city the opposite of still and unshakeable, popular humour flourished.
