Baker M.A., Bowling Green State University, 2000 M.A., Karl Franzens University, Graz, Austria, 1998 Committee Chair: Katharina Gerstenberger ABSTRACT “The Return of the Child Exile: Re-enactment of Childhood Trauma in Jewish Life- Writing and Documentary Film” is a study of the literary responses of writers who were Jewish children in hiding and exile during World War II and of documentary films on the topic of refugee children and children in exile. The goal of this dissertation is to investigate the relationships between trauma, memory, fantasy and narrative in a close reading/viewing of different forms of Jewish life-writing and documentary film by means of a scientifically informed approach to childhood trauma. Chapter 1 discusses the reception of Binjamin Wilkomirski’s Fragments (1994), which was hailed as a paradigmatic traumatic narrative written by a child survivor before it was discovered to be a fictional text based on the author’s invented Jewish life-story.

Primarily through loans to build up the economy and diplomatic pressure, the United States and Great Britain helped to maintain an independent Austrian state and prevent an Anschluss or union with Germany from 1918 to 1934. In addition, this study examines the minority of Austrians who opposed an Anschluss . The three main groups of Austrians that supported independence were the Christian Social Party, monarchists, and some industries and industrialists. These Austrian nationalists cooperated with the Americans and British in sustaining an unwilling Austrian nation. Ultimately, the global depression weakened American and British capacity to practice dollar and pound diplomacy, and the popular appeal of Hitler combined with Nazi Germany’s aggression led to the realization of the Anschluss .

UMI films the original text directly from the copy submitted. Thus, some dissertation copies are in typewriter face, while others may be from a computer printer. In the unlikely event that the author did not send UMI a complete manuscript and there are missing pages, these will be noted. Also, if unauthorized copyrighted material had to be removed, a note will indicate the deletion. Oversize materials (e.g., maps, drawings, charts) are re produced by sectioning the original, beginning at the upper left-hand corner and continuing from left to right in equal sections with small overlaps. Each oversize page is available as one exposure on a standard 35 mm slide or as a 17" x 23" black and white photographic print for an additional charge. Photographs included in the original manuscript have been reproduced xerographically in this copy. 35 mm slides or 6" x 9" black and white photographic prints are available for any photographs or illustrations appearing in this copy for an additional charge. • Appendix. Formulas, Diagrams and Tables
Appendix. Formulas, Diagrams and Tables Formulas for Refiection and Transmission Coefficients The following fermulas give reflection and transmission coefficients for the acoustic pressure as a function of the incidence angle, calculated for plane waves on plane boundaries and disregarding absorption. The notation of the formulas is based on that of Schoch [34] where, how ever, they refer not to the acoustic pressure but to the particle displace ment. Figures 2.6 to 2.13 and the Diagrams only give numerical values, i.e. without regard to phase. Free Boundary of aSolid (See Figs. 2.6, 2.7 and Diagram 1). Symbols: the angles of the longi tudinal and transverse waves are iXl and iXt , respectively. Thusfor example Rlt signifies the reflection coefficient of the acoustic pressure for a reflected longitudinal wave referred to an incident transverse wave. For the reflected longitudinal wave we have: R _ (Ct!Cl)2 sin 2G\1 sin 2G\t - cos2 2G\t 11- N (A.1) with the abbreviation for the denominator N = ( ::r sin 2iXi sin 2iXt + cos2 2iXt, for the reflected transverse wave: (A.2) with incident transverse wave (oscillation plane parallel to plane of in cidence) (cf. Fig. 2.7) for the reflected longitudinal wave: R __ sin 4G\t It - N' (A.3) for the reflected transverse wave: (A.4) 606 Formulas Interface between two Liquids Symbols: the angles of the incident, reflected and transmitted longi tudinal waves are cxe' cxr and CXd' respectively. The acoustic v-elocities and densities of materials 1 and 2 are Cl' (11 and C2, (12' respectively.

  • The Slovene Carinthians and the 1920 Plebiscite
SPRAWY NARODOWOŚCIOWE Seria nowa / naTiOnaliTIES AFFairs New series, 48/2016: 85–105 DOI: 10.11649/sn.2016.006 Maria isabella reinhard “an isOlaTed Case”*: The slOvene CarinThians and The 1920 PlebisCiTe absTraCT The end of WWI saw the dissolution of the multiethnic Cen- tral European Empires and the formation of new states based on Woodrow Wilson’s concept of national self-determination. This article underlines the limitations of Wilsonian national self-determination, focusing on the Slovene Carinthians and the pro-Austrian result of the 1920 plebiscite. The outcome of the plebiscite exemplifies that minorities are motivated by more than solely ethno-linguistic reasons when deciding what state to belong to. Even though other factors existed, the key motivations for Slovene Carinthians to remain with Austria were of economic and political nature. It will be con- tended that the importance of the centuries long accultura- tion of Slovene Carinthians to Austria brought them closer to Austria than to the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes. Additionally the phrasing of the plebiscite made Slovene Car- inthians’ decision a question of state preference rather than ethno-linguistic identity. Moreover, the unpleasant occupation of parts of Carinthia by the troops of the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats, and Slovenes and the higher effectiveness of Austri- an propaganda played a key role in the vote of many Slovene Carinthians. Lastly, the majority of Slovene Carinthians being farmers, reliant on Austrian trade opportunities, swayed them ............................... toward a pro-Austrian vote. Thus, the Carinthian plebiscite of Maria isabella reinhard 1920 builds a strong case against the assumption that ethno- University of St Andrews, St.

  • Introduction D
INTRODUCTION d You know that city so unshakeable and still, Where no one treats your ears ill, Where not every breath of wind makes you wholly Nervous, furious and full of folly? You know that city? That way! That way I’d like to escape with the next express train! —‘Moderne Ballade’, 1886 This is the first part of a poem titled ‘Modern Ballad’, published in the humor- ous magazine Der Floh in 1886.1 The author is, as in most humorous texts and pictures published in magazines like Der Floh, unknown. The signature below the ballad says only ‘Ein Wiener’ – a Viennese. Yet, although the identity of the writer of the ‘Modern Ballad’ is unknown, the contemporary middle-class audi- ence would certainly have immediately recognized the lines parodied here; they come from one of the most famous poems by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, ‘Mignon’s Song’.2 However, Goethe’s classic text, which refers to Italy, is here radically transformed. In the modern ballad, the speaker is longing for a city still and unshakeable, in order to take an express train to get there. This ironic paradox cannot be fully understood without the framework of humour. This inquiry into popular humour in Vienna between 1857 and 1890 is an attempt to discover why the city and its urban life in the late nineteenth century generated so much laughter, and how humour was used as an interpreta- tive framework with which to deal with the changing city environment. In Vienna in the second half of the nineteenth century, when the urbanization and transformation of the city space were making the city the opposite of still and unshakeable, popular humour flourished.
