www.sanjacsports.com 2009 Season Outlook 18-2-2 overall record. National runner-up. Second-straight Mid-South District championship. Fifth-consecutive Region XIV title. Three NJCAA all-Americans. To say the 2008 season was successful would be an understatement. It was the best season in school history. Head Coach David Santesteban enters his sixth season with a young squad, after losing one player to the professional ranks last season and three to NCAA institutions, but that doesn’t mean their goals are any different. “If we can master the basics, become organized and efficient in tactical transition, as well as become the strongest physically, then we will always have a chance to contend for championships,” he said. Santesteban has assembled a balanced recruiting class, as San Jac will have to fill the spot held by Kieron Bernard, an NJCAA All-American who is now playing professionally with the , and the departure of several other key players. Ready to step in are a couple members of the Houston Dynamo South Academy in defenders Israel Nava (Mission / Veterans Memorial HS) and Alfonso Magaña (Brownsville / Los Fresnos HS), as well as the Dynamo Youth Academy’s U-18 Gerardo Gomez (Houston / Continental Academy) and Samir Peña (Houston / North Shore HS). Nava helped the Patriots to two district championships and was a first-team All-District and All- Valley member as a senior. Magaña led the Falcons to their first ever playoffs as a senior and hopes to continue that success at San Jac. Peña, a forward, helped the Mustangs to the state finals as a junior and senior. Also new to the squad this season are NCAA transfers Carlos Recinos (Coastal Carolina) and Wendell James (Barry University). Recinos, a forward, is originally from Houston, and a member of the Dynamo Youth Academy. He helped Coastal to a 10-10-1 record last season, playing in 19 games scoring two goals. James started in 10 of 15 games played for Barry, who finished the season 11-6-1. Returners for Santesteban’s 2009 squad include goalkeeper Emmanuel Frias, who posted 28 saves last season, as well as forward Eddie Campbell, and midfielders Josue Garcia and Edgar Montoya. The three combined for 11 goals in 2008. The 2009 soccer team will have a new face on the sidelines, as Iñaki Eraña has joined the coaching staff as a volunteer assistant coach. “Having played 12 years in Spain’s La Liga, he brings a wealth of knowledge and experience that can help everyone involved in our program,” noted Santesteban. In addition, this season will be the first that the men’s soccer program can play under new lights installed at the field. This will be an opportunity for more students, fans and community members to see the team play, as most games will start later in the day. “This was a much needed step for our program,” said Santesteban. “This will help us in obtaining home field advantage, and will also help in our local recruiting efforts, and give our student-athletes a chance to play in front of their families and friends at a more enjoyable hour for everyone involved.” The season starts at home on Sept. 5 with the Coyote Invitational. San Jac will play conference rival Tyler Junior College twice during the regular season, and will also face national powerhouses Northern Oklahoma, Barton County Community College and Lincoln Land Community College. “The NJCAA Mid-South District is one of the toughest in the country,” noted Santesteban. “Some of our toughest competition will come from the district, as well as from Jefferson County and Richland, who have been extremely successful at the D-3 level.” San Jac will host eight regular season home matches under the lights. Look for the 2009 season to be fun and competitive, as San Jac makes another run at the national title.

Head coach David Santesteban is entering his sixth season at the helm of the San Jacinto College soccer program and has quickly made San Jac not only a well-known name in the soccer community, but a powerhouse in the junior college ranks.

A four-time Region XIV and Mid-Southwest District coach of the year, Santesteban has led each of his San Jacinto College teams to the Region XIV championship. The last two seasons have seen consecutive Mid-South District championships resulting in trips to the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) national tournament, a tournament that is quickly becoming “home” to San Jac soccer.

2008 was the most successful season for San Jac men’s soccer. Santesteban’s team finished as the national runner-up after plowing through the competition in the first two rounds. Three players were named NJCAA and NSCAA all-Americans, and five others earned national recognition. Kieron Bernard, the team’s defensive MVP, signed a professional contract with the Austin Aztex FC.

In 2004 and 2005, San Jac won the Mid-South District champions and went on to respective third and fourth place finishes at the NJCAA tournament. For his efforts, Santesteban was named the Mid-South District coach of the year both seasons, and the team was honored with the Sportsmanship Award at the 2004 national championship.

Off the field, Santesteban’s teams have posted solid academic marks as well. “This is a testimony to the excellent programs at the Student Success Center and the overall support of our faculty, staff and administration,” said Santesteban. “San Jacinto College is an excellent institution to begin the academic process.”

Along those lines, Santesteban feels a dedication to his players in and out of the classroom. “First and foremost, we want to help develop the student-athletes who come to San Jacinto College with the desire to use our path as a stepping stone to a four-year degree,” he said. “To see these young players come into the program, mature as young men and eventually get a degree is one of the most important and rewarding aspects of my coaching role. While we strive for excellence and set our goals on the national tournament each year, earning a solid education is far more valuable than any championship.”

Prior to coming to San Jacinto College, Santesteban was the head coach at Southwest Oregon Community College from 2000 to 2003, where the Lakers boasted an overall mark of 33-22-10 and made two playoff appearances.

From 1996 to 1999 Santesteban was the assistant coach at the University of New Mexico where he helped the Lobos earn its first-ever NCAA Division I top-20 rankings.

As a player, Santesteban was a member of the nationally ranked Fresno State Bulldogs (1989-1990). During his career, Fresno State advanced to two Big West Championship title games and made two NCAA playoff appearances. He also played for Fresno City College, where he was awarded all-conference first-team honors in two consecutive seasons (1987-1988). His professional experience includes the San Francisco Bay Diablos and Santa Cruz Surf of the USISL. He was also a member of the semi-professional San Jose Oaks (National Open Cup Champion). From 1996-1997, Santesteban trained with Club Atletico Osasuna of the Spanish second division in Pamplona, Spain, and also worked in the front office under the director of the soccer school, Manolo Los Arcos Zaratiegui.

In 2007, Santesteban earned his doctorate degree in sports administration from the University of New Mexico. He also holds a bachelor’s and master’s degree in physical education from Fresno State University.

Santesteban and his wife, Michelle, reside in Houston with their three daughters Gabriele, Mikaela and Eliana.

Kieron Bernard

Where are they now? The opportunity for San Jacinto College soccer players to continue their education and playing careers at four-year institutions is real. Over the past five years, dozens of San Jac players have been invited to do just that at colleges and universities across the country. Some are even afforded the opportunity to play professionally. Here are the players who have moved on following their careers at San Jacinto College: Photo courtesy Dane Richards 2008 Kieron Bernard – Austin Aztex USL I (professional) Soccer players of any age can gain inspiration from the tale of Dane Richards and Kieron Gabriel Rodriguez – Virginia Commonwealth Bernard, former soccer stars at San Jacinto College. There is little doubt that the Jamaican-born University (D-I) players and many of their peers dreamed one day of making it to the big stage. Well, Dane and Cyprian Hedrick – Coastal Carolina University (D-I) Kieron have done it. Oscar Suvias – Texas A&M University International (D-II) Prior to the 2003 season, Richards might not have known exactly where Houston was on the map, but former San Jacinto College head coach Ben Hunter knew him. Hunter, who had 2007 developed quite a knack for recruiting players from Jamaica, brought Richards to San Jacinto Frazier Biba – Embry-Riddle, Arizona College that season. Richards, displaying remarkable speed and ball handling Roy Hernandez – Texas A&M International (D-II) skills, scored 20 goals that season. Playing for current head coach Dr. David Santesteban the Corey McPhearson – Tusculum University (D-II) following season, Richards scored 25 times, becoming the all-time career scorer at San Jac. Caesar Vallejo – University of Texas – Dallas (D-III) Along the way, Richards guided the team to a third-place national finish. Carlos Villa – University of Hartford (D-I) Leon Williams - University of San Francisco (D-I) Richards went on to lead Clemson University to the NCAA College Cup. After graduation, Ricardo Ximines – Florida International (D-I) the New York Red Bulls drafted him in the second round of the 2007 amateur draft. Now, the Montego Bay native is playing the sport professionally. The Red Bulls’ midfielder made his first 2006 professional start in April 2007 at Columbus and notched his first MLS point when he assisted Charles Hines – William Carey College (NAIA) on Clint Mathis’ goal on April 15 against FC Dallas. Richards scored his first career MLS goal on Howard Wong – University of Hartford (D-I) May 5, 2007, against . He was a finalist for the 2007 MLS Rookie of the ear.Y Ruzdhi Halili – Houston Baptist University (D-I) Ardalan Attar – University of San Francisco (D-I) “I knew Dane could do this,” Santesteban said. “In 2004, it didn’t take me long to see what type Derrick Henry – Belmont University (D-I) of player he was and what he could become. It’s a credit to his work ethic. It proves that if you do things right and believe, you have a chance to do whatever you like.” 2005 Brandon Durden – Houston Baptist University (D-I) Bernard, who Santesteban recruited, followed much of the same path as Richards. He came to Erik Sorenson – DePaul University (D-I) San Jac from Spanish Town, Jamaica, and quickly made his mark on the SJC program. A crafty Ryan Maxwell – University of Tampa (D-II) defender, Kieron quickly established himself as a premier collegiate player. He captained the San Jac men’s soccer team to a second place national finish in 2008, and also played for Portmore 2004 United in the Jamaican in the 2008-09 season. Dane Richards – Clemson University (D-I) Juan Adan – William Carey College (NAIA) “I’m very excited for Kieron,” said Santesteban. “He’s a tremendous player and has a bright Ashkan Attar – Grand Canyon University (D-II) future ahead of him as a professional player. I would expect that it won’t take too long before Luis Hernandez – Mercer University (D-I) he’s playing in the MLS () or possibly even in England.” Matt Tompkins – University of Philadelphia (D-I) Dao Vu – Houston Baptist University (D-I) Bernard was a two-tine NJCAA and NSCAA All-American. Surrounded by the monuments of history, the industries and maritime enterprises of today, and the space age of tomorrow, San Jacinto College is now in its 48th year of serving the citizens of East Harris County, Texas. The service area includes the Channelview, Deer Park, Galena Park, La Porte, Pasadena and Sheldon Independent School Districts, as well as portions of the Humble, Pearland, and Clear Creek school districts.

The college roots date back to May of 1960 when voters in the district approved the creation of East Harris County Union Junior College and a seven-member Board of Regents was established. The name was changed a few times over its history to its current San Jacinto Community College District, although it has always been informally referred to as San Jacinto College. In September of 1961, 876 students attended the College at its location in Pasadena. Since then, the College has grown to include three campuses, seven extension centers, a continuing and professional development division, distance learning, a dual credit program with local high schools, an early college high school in cooperation with Clear Creek ISD, and an enrollment of over 25,000 credit students each semester.
