FC DALLAS vs CHICAGO FIRE PIZZA HUT PARK, Frisco, Texas 7:30 p.m. CT (FSN-SW; My50-Chi.)

March 21, 2009 (WEEK 1) MLS Game #3

Long-time rivals who play for the Brimstone Cup, awarded to the winner of the season series by the supporters’ groups of both teams, FC Dallas and the Chicago Fire face each other to kick off the 2009 season. FC Dallas is looking to return to the MLS Cup Playoffs after missing out last season – just the third time in club history they failed to qualify. For the third time in four years, the Fire were 90 minutes away from an MLS Cup Final appearance, and this year they’re aiming to get over the last hurdle and win their first championship since the club’s inaugural season in 1998.

LAST YEAR (MLS): 6/15: DAL 1, CHI 0 (Cooper 17) 9/21: CHI 1, DAL 4 (McBride 90 – Cunningham 2, 61; Pitchkolan 43; Guarda 45) • FC Dallas have a six-game league unbeaten streak against the Fire. Chicago’s last victory in the series came June 12, 2005, a 2-0 win at . • The clubs play for the Brimstone Cup – awarded by the two supporters’ clubs of the two teams so named when it matched the Fire and the Burn (the name of the Dallas club until 2004). • Dallas has won the cup for each of the last seven seasons. The Fire won the first series in 2001, the Burn then claiming it in 2002, retaining it in 2003 when the teams leveled the series, then winning both league meetings in 2004. In 2005, the teams split their league meetings, but the FCD won the cup when they won the U.S. Open Cup semifinal matchup. Dallas took both league meetings in 2006, took one (with a tie) in 2007, then won both again last year. • Chicago hasn’t won at Dallas since July 4, 1999, when the Fire claimed a 2-1 victory at the Cotton Bowl. FCD then won eight league meetings in a row before playing to a draw in 2007, and has gone unbeaten at home in three matches in the MLS Cup Playoffs. • Coaches record: Schellas Hyndman v CHI: P1 W1 L0 D0 … Denis Hamlett vs. DAL: P2 W0 L0 D0

FC DALLAS In charge of the team from the outset, FC Dallas head coach Schellas Hyndman is looking to put his stamp on the team and guide it back to the postseason after missing out last year. It was just the third time in Dallas club history the team did not reach the postseason, failing to post double-digits in victories for just the second time ever. • FC Dallas concluded their 2009 preseason campaign with a 1-0 victory against partner Clube Atletico Paranaense, but lost the USA/Brazil Challenge on penalty kicks, after falling 4-3 in the first leg in Brazil three weeks earlier. • Jeff Cunningham scored the game’s lone goal – after just 52 seconds. In the shootout, hit all five of their penalties, while Andre Rocha was the only FCD player to miss. • Here’s Schellas Hyndman’s team: Dario Sala (GK), Blake Wagner (Aaron Pitchkolan 91+), Daniel Torres, Steve Purdy, Drew Moor, Dave van den Bergh, Pablo Ricchetti, David Ferreira, Dax McCarty (Andre Rocha 69), Jeff Cunningham (Ray Burse 82), Kenny Cooper. • The game marked the U.S. debut of attacking midfielder David Ferreira, obtained on loan from Clube Atletico Paranaense and slotted into the No. 10 role.

MLS GAME INFORMATION

• “Here’s a guy who doesn’t know us. He might have had four training sessions with us. So he really doesn’t know us and I don’t think we know him because there were a lot of times where he was available and we didn’t pass him the ball,” Hyndman said. “I think as we grow together, we’re going to find him much more. As you can see, he’s a very skillful player when the ball is on his feet.” • In the back, Hyndman paired newcomers Steve Purdy and Daniel Torres together, with Drew Moor sliding to right back with the injury to Marcelo Saragosa – who was moved to the right of the back four at the start of the preseason. • “I think that’s a good combination,” Hyndman said. “Torres is left-footed and opens up the left side a little bit easier. Purdy, when he was in , played on the left side, and has more comfort going to the right. They seem to really complement each other. I think they’re both really athletic. I think the two of them bring a little big more athleticism than we’ve had. There’s calmness out there and I think that helps tremendously.” • On the right side of midfield, Dax McCarty will likely open the season as the starter, having won the job from Brazilian Andre Rocha. • “I’m sure when everybody looks at Dax right now and you compare it to the end of last year, you’re looking at two different players,” Hyndman said. “I give him the credit for focusing, maturing, coming out, earning his playing time and excelling.” • McCarty offsets Dave van den Bergh on the left, acquired from the New York Red Bulls in the offseason. Van den Bergh’s service from the left has already provided a new dimension for the FCD first-choice strike pair of Kenny Cooper and Jeff Cunningham. • “It’s really easy for me to come inside when I need to and get wide when I need to (in this midfield),” McCarty said. “I think that the balance is a lot better than it’s been the last few years. I think that’s a really key word and key thing for this team, to be balanced on both sides of the field. That’s what Dave gives us. I’m just trying to feed off him and ultimately play my role in the midfield.”

CHICAGO FIRE The Chicago Fire have been regular participants in the Eastern Conference Championship in recent years, but their last trip to the MLS title game came in 2003. In his second full season in charge, Denis Hamlett is looking to change that this season, maintaining much the same group as in his first season at the helm. • The Fire concluded their preseason schedule with a 1-1 draw against the Galaxy in the PHX Soccer Clasico held at Sun Devil Stadium on the campus of Arizona State University in Tempe, Ariz. Josh Tudela gave the Galaxy a fourth-minute lead, but Marco Pappa hit for the leveler in the 30th minute. • Here’s Denis Hamlett’s team: Jon Busch (Nick Noble 60), Gonzalo Segares, Dasan Robinson, Bakary Soumare, Tim Ward, Justin Mapp (Cuauhtemoc Blanco 61), Wilman Conde, Logan Pause, Marco Pappa (Mike Banner 76), Brian McBride, Patrick Nyarko (Stefan Dimitrov 86). • Cuauhtemoc Blanco, who came on as a substitute for the final half hour in Arizona, is expected only to be able to fill a sub role for the opener at Pizza Hut Park. • "He had an issue, some swelling in his knee the first part of the preseason. He slowly got back into it in Mexico but was in and out. In L.A., he was able to play and train every day, got himself two 90-minute games against the college teams and two reserve roles against Chivas and L.A.," Hamlett said. "We feel he is moving the right direction. Is he ready to play 90 minutes at the MLS level? I'm not quite sure yet. We have to be smart with him and push him the right way to get him up to speed." • Blanco joined the team later in preseason after spending part of the offseason on a loan stint with Club of Mexico’s FMF Primera Division. • Center back Bakary Soumare, a finalist for MLS Defender of the Year honors, will be available for the opener, but will the second game (at D.C. United on March 28), after being called into Mali’s national team for their World Cup qualifier against Sudan scheduled for the same day. • Another concern could be Chris Rolfe, who can fill either a striker role or play wide in the midfield. Rolfe did not figure in the game in Arizona. • "He's been sick since we got back from Mexico and he picked up a virus so he hasn't been in training for 10 days," Hamlett said. "Now he's going to be a little bit behind, given the situation." • Patrick Nyarko has taken the opportunity in Rolfe’s absence and could start alongside Brian McBride for the opener. • “He's been one of our surprises we've had this year in terms of his ability as a striker. You start to see what we thought when we drafted the kid,” said Hamlett. “He worked very hard to be at the point he is at right now and I'm excited for him and looking forward to seeing him starting to have an impact because I think that he's going to have a good season here for us."

MLS GAME INFORMATION

• There was a concern when defending MLS Goalkeeper of the Year Jon Busch suffered a jammed thumb in Mexico. Busch’s backup is Nick Noble – who has yet to make his MLS debut. “It feels good,” Busch told the ChicagoTribune. “[But] according to the doctors, it's still healing.” • The Fire will likely head into the opening match having made no changes to the team that ended the 2008 season in a loss to the in the Eastern Conference Championship. • "I think we are going to be hungrier," Hamlett said. "We are not content with, three of the last four years, getting to the conference final and losing. We want to get to the big prize. We need a little bit to get over the hump. Part of that has to do with home field advantage. The last two years we have been on the road for the conference final."
