Je s s e Ow e n s St a d i u m Jesse Owens Stadium is home to the Cal State L.A. soccer, cross country and track and field teams. With permanent bleacher seating for 5,000 spectators, it also hosts many other events throughout the year, including the University’s commencement ceremony each June. In preparation for the 1984 Summer Olympics held in Los Angeles, Cal State L.A. was selected as one of six sites to construct a world-class training track. The groundbreaking ceremony was held on January 29, 1982. The initial surface selected by the L.A. Organizing Committee for the track was “Recaflex S.” This surface, known for its versatility, is hard enough to record fast times but still soft enough to allow for a regular training regiment. The track was officially dedicated on May 22, 1983, during the L.A. Regional Championships of the ARCO Jesse Owens Games.
