2015 NASL Media Guide About the NASL

The North American Soccer League’s (NASL) Golden Era put soccer on the map in the in the 1970s and ‘80s. The Modern Era, since 2011, has continued that rich history. Entering its fifth season, the league has grown to 11 clubs, which will be the most since its return. The New York Cosmos, Tampa Bay Rowdies, and Fort Lauderdale Strikers names have carried on from the league’s early years and they are joined by the Atlanta Silverbacks, Carolina RailHawks, FC Edmonton, Indy Eleven, Minnesota United FC, Ottawa Fury FC, San Antonio Scorpions and expansion side Jacksonville Armada FC in 2015. With the steady growth of the league, the NASL has begun to attract more recognizable names on the global stage. Spanish legend Raúl will don the Cosmos’ green and white kit, while Marvin Chavez and Sammy N’Djock, who were on the Honduran and Cameroonian National Team squads in the 2014 FIFA World Cup, have joined the Scorpions and United respectively. Brazilian legend Ronaldo has joined the Strikers as a part-owner. United’s represented the U.S. Men’s National Team for the first time in 2014 and started a match in January 2015, becoming the first player to do so since Perry Van Der Beck in 1985. The clubs will compete under the league’s split-season format, which will consist of 10 games in the Spring Season and 20 in the Fall Season. The win- ners of the Spring and Fall Seasons will earn a place in The Championship, the league’s four-team playoff format. The two clubs with the next best overall

2 2015 NASL Media Guide records will receive the remaining playoff berths. The champion will lift the Soccer Bowl trophy, which is the third oldest men’s professional outdoor soccer prize in the United States. With their win in The Championship Final in 2014, the Scorpions earned their first NASL title defeating the Fort Lauderdale Strikers, 2-1, at in front of nearly 8,000 fans. The club joined the Cosmos, Rowdies, and NSC Min- nesota Stars (now Minnesota United) as champions in the Modern Era. The NASL set its newest regular season attendance record for the Modern Era, as 14,593 fans turned up to watch the Cosmos visit Ottawa Fury FC in the club’s inaugural match at TD Place in 2014. In addition to competing in league play, nine U.S. based clubs will compete in the 102nd edition of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup. The Silverbacks and RailHawks reached the quarterfinals a season ago, combining for four victories over MLS sides. The two Canadian clubs – FC Edmonton and Ottawa Fury FC – will feature in the Amway Canadian Championship, where FC Edmonton fell just short of reaching the final for the first time in their history in 2014. 11 2015 NASL Media Guide 2015 NASL Outlook

The 2014 NASL season saw the new postseason format, The Championship, the 2014 NASL season introduced the new postseason format, The Champion- ship, and culminated in an exciting finish with the San Antonio Scorpions winning their first NASL title. In 2015, it should be no different, as the two season winners (Spring and Fall) and the next two teams with the best overall records will compete for the right to lift the Soccer Bowl Trophy. The Spring Season consists of 10 games, and the clubs will play a total of 20 games in the Fall Season. “Our competition format is a byproduct of the number of teams we have in the league at this time,” Commissioner Peterson said. “The schedule will balance out when we reach 16 or 17 teams, but in the meantime, we think the Spring Season will always be a dog fight and something that will be extremely fun for all of our fans to watch.” The NASL will also welcome an expansion side, Jacksonville Armada FC. The club debuted in front of a Modern Era preseason record of 13,394 fans in a 3-1 win at EverBank Field over the Union. Bringing the number of competing clubs to 11, it will be the highest total since the relaunch in 2011. “All of the matches will be hard,” said Armada FC coach, José Luis Villarreal. “We can never underestimate the opponent. I like watching our opponents a lot and I will be studying them prior to our matchups. But I put more emphasis on my own team and what they will be doing. I have a lot of respect for the NASL and what we are doing.” The defending NASL Champions, the San Antonio Scorpions, clinched the Fall Championship in the final seconds against the New York Cosmos through an Adrian Cann tally in a 1-0 win. The club then went on to beat the Cosmos the fol- lowing week in the semifinal and defeated the Fort Lauderdale Strikers at Toyota Field to win The Championship Final. “From ownership, to stadiums, media attention and the addition of Jackson- ville, the NASL has strengthened significantly in the offseason and I personally think it’s fantastic for the growth of our league,” said, Scorpions coach Alen Mar- cina. “As for us, we are establishing our short-term goals, we’re very focused on defending our NASL record-setting championship, we are building the culture of our club and we are dedicated to the long-term project here in San Antonio.” Minnesota United FC was crowned the Spring Champion and will look to repeat their strong 2014 form. Having the reigning Golden Ball winner in United States Men’s National Team member Miguel Ibarra and Golden Boot winner Christian Ramirez, the Loons have only gotten stronger with offseason additions. “We did some special things last year, but obviously didn’t achieve our goal,” United coach Manny Lagos said. “This year there is a focus on continuing to strive for trophies. We are excited about the pieces we have added and the quality roster we have returning. Ultimately the story this year will be told by how we approach the season and how things unfold on the field.”

12 2015 NASL Media Guide 2015 NASL Outlook

The competition has gotten stronger with each side adding key players for 2015. The Cosmos, the 2013 Soccer Bowl winners, have added legendary Spanish forward Raúl, 2014 Best XI midfielder Walter Restrepo, and signed El Salvador captain Andres Flores, who was with the club on loan last season. “We’re excited about the start of the 2015 season,” said Cosmos coach . “The league continues to grow in quality every year and with the addition of Jacksonville, it’ll be an even bigger challenge for us.” Along with Villarreal at Jacksonville, the Tampa Bay Rowdies, Atlanta Silverbacks, and Fort Lauderdale Strikers all have first-time NASL coaches at the helm.

The Rowdies have turned into a more soccer-specific sta- dium, and have re-tooled the playing squad as well to fit coach ’s aggressive, Total Football style of play. “The 2015 season will be an exciting one for the Tampa Bay Rowdies,” said Rongen. “We’ve undergone a lot of change this offseason, but I’m proud of the team we’ve assembled. “Our team will play a specific way. We will play aggressively with a little bit of bite. We want our opponents to know before each match that they’re in for a dif- ficult night, especially at our home at Al Lang Stadium.” Gary Smith returns to the U.S. after a coaching stint with Stevenage FC in England, as he takes charge of the Silverbacks. While Atlanta struggled in the league last season, they were one of two NASL sides to reach the quarterfinals of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup. Smith is ready for the challenges ahead. “I am extremely excited to be joining the Atlanta Silverbacks and the NASL,” Smith said. “Having spent three years away from the U.S. soccer scene, I’m look- ing forward to bringing a creative and fresh mindset to challenge the talented and competitive teams that already exist in this league.” 13 2015 NASL Media Guide Marcelo Neveleff, coach of the Strikers, has prior experience in one of South America’s most prestigious tournaments. He believes the NASL is a lot like the Copa Libertadores. Neveleff explained: “When you play in Copa Libertadores, you play against a lot of international teams but players from all over the continent. I think this league, the NASL, is kind of the same thing. You have all the teams you play from Canada and the U.S. with all of the international players that the teams are signing.” Colin Miller, coach of FC Edmonton, believes this could be the most competi- tive season ever in the NASL Modern Era. The Eddies finished sixth overall a year ago but a mere three points from a postseason berth. “This could possibly be the most challenging NASL season since my involve- ment with FC Edmonton,” Miller noted. “Every team has shown improvement and ambition in this offseason, and we at FC Edmonton, are no different. “I’m very excited by the signings that I’m seeing around the league and the coaching staff that has come in - it speaks very highly for the standards of our league. Every soccer fan of the NASL should be very excited for the season to come.” The Carolina RailHawks also reached the quarterfinals of the Open Cup and narrowly missed out on a postseason berth in 2014. While the schedule will include a bye week in the Spring Season and multiple midweek games in the Fall Season, head coach Colin Clarke is ready for the season. “With more teams it means a couple of bye weeks which will be a little differ- ent for everybody as well as some midweek games,” said Clarke. “Overall I think it is a good schedule from our point of view, and I am looking forward to it.” Indy Eleven and Ottawa Fury FC were both newcomers to the NASL in 2014, and both will take lessons learned into the upcoming season. “Last year was certainly a learning experience for everyone at Indy Eleven, and we were perhaps caught off guard with just how high the level of play was in the NASL across the board early on,” Indy Eleven coach Juergen Sommer said. “But we upgraded the roster throughout the year and the group became more cohesive, and that bore itself out in the results we earned in September and Oc- tober.” Fury FC coach added: “In the NASL every point is impor- tant – there are no easy games. As a team we matured a lot in 2014 and we’ve brought back an important core and filled in our squad with talented players that are hungry to win.” The NASL features the most teams competing since 1983. With the second year of The Championship, and the arrival of the Jacksonville Armada FC as well, the upcoming season should provide even more excitement and build on what the league has accomplished in the past four seasons. “I can’t wait for the start of the 2015 Fall Season, opening with Fourth of July fireworks and ending with a bang in early November,” Peterson said. “The last two fall seasons have gone down to the wire, and I suspect it won’t be any differ- ent in 2015.”

The Atlanta Silverbacks will have a new direction in 2015 and under Gary Smith’s leadership the club will look to get back to a title game, as they did in 2013. Having most recently coached in England, Smith has utilized those contacts to bring in players such as defenders Paul Black and Simon Mensing. The club has also added several NASL and most notably former Best XI selection Hans Denissen. The first-year head coach knows exactly what he wants the Silverbacks to look like when the season starts.

“The teams I have coached have always been technically efficient, well balanced, with pace, athleticism and creation in attacking areas of the pitch,” said Smith. “And when things get tough, they have resolve and strength in character. I have no fear we will be in good shape for April 4.”

The Carolina RailHawks narrowly missed out on the postseason last year finishing two points adrift of the final spot in The Championship.

Bringing back attacking players Nacho Novo and Tiyiselani Shipalane, the RailHawks have also added several NASL veterans to compete in 2015. Mark Anderson, Simone Bracalello, and will bring valuable experience to the club, particularly since all three have played in a NASL title game in the past.

“With more teams it means a couple of bye weeks which will be a little different for everybody as well as some midweek games,” said RailHawks coach, Colin Clarke. “Overall I think it is a good schedule from our point of view, and I am looking forward to it.”

Another club that narrowly missed out on a chance to compete in The Championship, FC Edmonton has bolstered their roster heading into the 2015 season. With Oskar Hauksson and Sainey Nyassi, the club has added more firepower to go along with NASL Best XI midfielder Lance Laing. With an already stout defense, the Eddies will look to secure a postseason berth this season.

“This could possibly be the most challenging NASL season since my involvement with FC Edmonton,” FC Edmonton coach, Colin Miller said. “Every team has shown improvement and ambition this offseason, and we at FC Edmonton are no different.

“I’m very excited by the signings that I’m seeing around the league and the coaching staffs that have come in - it speaks very highly for the standards of our league. Every soccer fan of the NASL should be very excited for the season to come.”

The Fort Lauderdale Strikers finished 2014 as the NASL’s hottest club. With a seven-game unbeaten streak to close out the Fall Season, the Strikers clinched the final postseason spot and ultimately finished as runners-up.

With a new head coach, Marcelo Neveleff, and several new faces in the squad, the Strikers will look to get back to The Championship Final.

“The expectation is to put together a good team, a good product on the field, and to do well,” said Neveleff. “Last year the Strikers got to the final. It will be hard to achieve the same things, but that’s the challenge. That’s what we’re looking forward to.”

After a sellout in every home game at Michael A. Carroll Stadium during their inaugural season, Indy Eleven will look to add a few more home wins and improve on their ninth-place finish in the combined standings. The club returned the core from a season ago but has bolstered the squad in the attacking areas with Osman Melgares and Jamaican international Brian Brown. NASL veteran Greg Janicki, who lifted the Soccer Bowl trophy in 2014 with San Antonio, will add leadership while strengthening the backline.

“We’re excited to feed off that momentum, and the return of a core group of a dozen or so players will help, including pretty much the entire backline that really came on strong at the end of 2014,” said Indy Eleven coach, Juergen Sommer. “We’ll have a lot of new faces in the attack, so if we can blend them in quickly and feed off the energy of the best fans in the NASL, I’m confident Indy Eleven will be in the mix for a spot in The Championship right off the bat in 2015.”

Launched in January 2013, Jacksonville Armada FC will kick off its inaugural season on April 4. The club’s official name was unveiled on February 18, 2014 at Jacksonville Landing.

Under the helm of co-coaches Jose Luis Villarreal and Guillermo Hoyos, Armada FC has added a mix of local and experienced talent from around the NASL such as , who was a member of the New York Cosmos championship winning squad in 2013.

Also players with vast experience have joined as well. Marcos Flores recently played for Australian A-League side Newcastle Jets, Alhassane Keita, whose most notable accomplishments occurred at FC Zurich, and Jaime Castrillón, who has played for Independiente, should all make an impact straightaway in their first season in the NASL.

“I want a team that is dynamic,” Villarreal said. “Our playing style is heavily focused on attacking our opponents. But also, we want to take precautions and always defend. I want a short style of play where my team will move in blocks. We definitely have to work hard, and that’s what we are doing.”

Minnesota United FC had a largely successful season in 2014. The club won the Spring Season and won a host of individual awards at the end of the year.

The Loons will look to build off that success to lift the Soccer Bowl trophy in 2015. With U.S. Men’s National Team player Miguel Ibarra and the reigning NASL Golden Boot winner Christian Ramirez, the club shouldn’t be lacking in firepower. Minnesota United FC also added key players like J.C. Banks, Jonny Steele, Kalif Alhassan, and Ibson.

“We did some special things last year, but obviously didn’t achieve our ultimate goal,” said United coach, Manny Lagos. “This year there is a focus on continuing to strive for trophies. To do that, we have to both embrace some of the good things we did last year and improve on some of the areas where we could have done better.”

The New York Cosmos were unable to defend their title in 2014 after losing to the eventual champions, the San Antonio Scorpions, in the semifinals.

The club will return important players, as they push to return to the pinnacle of the NASL. Marcos Senna, Danny Szetela, and the club’s leading goalscorer, Mads Stokkelien, will all be back for the upcoming campaign. The Cosmos also added several vital offseason additions: Adam Moffat, NASL Best XI midfielder Walter Restrepo, and Spanish legend Raúl.

“We’re excited about the start of the 2015 season,” said Cosmos coach, Giovanni Savarese. “The league continues to grow in quality every year and with the addition of Jacksonville, it’ll be an even bigger challenge for us.”

Ottawa Fury FC enters its second season in the NASL seeking to build off their eighth place finish in the combined standings a year ago. The club has brought back a strong core from 2014 but has added several veterans to the roster in 2015. NASL veterans such as Rafael Alves and Mike Randolph will bolster the defense, while Paulo Junior and NASL newcomer will add more firepower in the final third.

“In the NASL every point is important – there are no easy games,” said Fury FC coach, Marc Dos Santos. “As a team we matured a lot in 2014 and we’ve brought back an important core and filled in our squad with talented players that are hungry to win.

“Every NASL team has made significant changes to their squad, but we are confident that we have the depth, experience, and talent to not just compete every game but have a chance to win every night.”

The San Antonio Scorpions captured the 2014 Fall Season title with a last-gasp goal by Adrian Cann, and then followed that up with their first- ever NASL Championship.

In Alen Marcina’s first full season as head coach, the Scorpions were the first to win the title in the NASL’s new postseason format, defeating the Fort Lauderdale Strikers, 2-1.

Many of the players that were key contributors will return such as The Championship goalscorers Billy Forbes and Rafael Castillo, while the club welcomes the additions of former Colombian youth internationals Eduar Zea and Cristian Palomeque.

“From ownership, to stadiums, media attention, and the addition of Jacksonville, the NASL has strengthened significantly in the offseason, and I personally think it’s fantastic for the growth of our league,” Marcina said. “As for us, we are establishing our short-term goals, we’re very focused on defending our NASL record-setting championship, we are building the culture of our club and we are dedicated to the long-term project here in San Antonio.”

The Tampa Bay Rowdies will have a fresh look in 2015. With a new coach, Thomas Rongen, at the helm, the club has brought in several new faces to the roster as well to play in the renovated Al Lang Stadium.

The club has bolstered its backline with Gale Agbossoumonde, Brad Rusin, and Darnell King among others. In the midfield, the Rowdies should see a more aggressive side, fitting into Rongen’s Total Football philosophy with Juan Guerra and Marcelo Saragosa in the middle of the park.

“The 2015 season will be an exciting one for the Tampa Bay Rowdies,” Rongen said. “We’ve undergone a lot of change this offseason, but I’m proud of the team we’ve assembled. We have a strong mix of experienced players plus plenty of youth and energy.

“Our team will play a specific way. We will play aggressively with a little bit of bite. We want our opponents to know before each match that they’re in for a difficult night, especially at our home at Al Lang Stadium. It’s a long season, but I believe in everything we’re doing to prepare ourselves to achieve great things together.”

2015 NASL Media Guide Media Guidelines & Regulations

NASL PR Staff Members and Team PR Staff Members must ensure that all working conditions are harmonious and a balance is struck between the needs of the media (as representatives of the fans and the public) and the needs of the clubs.

Game Notes: Teams will provide games notes to media members on the day of a match to provide them with all of the relevant information regarding the upcoming matchup.

Media Credentials: All Teams must print and distribute media credentials to all designated media members that will be working within the grounds of the Host Stadium. Each team should print both single-game or season-long media credentials. Photographers and/or videographers must be attached to a legitimate media organization to acquire credentials. All Teams must provide colored bibs for Still Photographers and TV Broadcast Crew Members. The two groups should be wearing different colored bibs that are designated by each Team.

Press Box: The press box area is a neutral zone. Both home and visiting team personnel and media shall refrain from yelling or cheering. Media must not wear Team apparel in the press box and are reminded to remain neutral when in areas made accessible by their credential. Media must not consume alcohol while in possession of a media credential and may not request autographs. Violators may be asked to leave the Press Box area and/or have their credential privileges suspended or revoked.

Locker Rooms: Team locker rooms will not be open to media members at any time before, during, and after every match. The Home and Away Team training/treatment areas and referee locker rooms are also strictly off limits to all members of the media. All regulations regarding media access to the locker rooms should be clearly communicated to Team Staff and Security Personnel to ensure a secure environment. TV Broadcast Crew Members may film inside the locker rooms prior to the Team’s arrival, but only after coordinating with Home Team and Visiting Team PR Staff Members. No interviews of any kind will be allowed inside the locker rooms.

Stadium Access: Credentialed media members will have access to the stadium, professional workrooms, stadium seating, and post-match media activities. During the match, all credentialed media will have access to the press box, which will be regulated by Home Team PR Staff Members. In addition, all accredited media members should be given a seat in the press box if possible.

59 2015 NASL Media Guide Media Guidelines & Regulations

Traveling Media: The Home Team shall provide press box seating for traveling media members at each game and should keep in mind the needs of media members traveling from the Visiting Team’s area.

Home Team PR Staff Responsibilities: The Home Team PR Staff Members will be in attendance on game day in order to attend to working media members before, during, and after the match.

Statistics Crew: Statistical information such as box score and updated league standings etc. in the press box or in a location with a good view of the match.

Still Photography: Still photographers, with the proper bib, are permitted to shoot matches in areas specifically designated by the Home Team. If a Home and/or Visiting Team PR Staff has a specific Team Photographer at the match, then those individuals will wear a different color bib to indicate that they can be granted special access to any stadium level as long it they do not obstruct the view of spectators, security personnel, medical officials, and emergency exits. At no time are photographers allowed on the field of play.

Interview Area: The Home Team PR Director will designate a suitable postgame interview area on or near the field of play. This area shall be equipped with a team/sponsor backdrop to create a ‘Coaches TV Area’ where interviews may be conducted. United States Soccer Federation - Founded: 1913 FIFA Affiliated: 1914. CONCACAF Affiliated: 1961 As the governing body of soccer in all its forms in the United States, U.S. Soccer has played an integral part in charting the course for the sport in the USA for 100 years. In that time, the Federation’s mission statement has been clear and simple: to make soccer, in all its forms, a preeminent sport in the United States and to continue the development of soccer at all recreational and competitive levels. In 1989, the U.S. Men’s National Team had not played in a World Cup in 40 years and the U.S. Women’s program was in its early stages. U.S. Soccer was playing games in small stadiums that did not reach capacity, few matches were televised, soccer-specific stadiums were yet to be created and there were no high- level professional outdoor leagues. Since that time, the state of U.S. Soccer has evolved significantly. In 2014, U.S. MNT competed in its seventh consecutive FIFA World Cup and the team progressed to the Round-of-16 for the second straight event in Brazil. U.S. Soccer is a world leader in women’s soccer at every level, and the U.S. WNT has won two FIFA Women’s World Cups and four Olympic Gold Medals – an accomplishment that no other country on the men’s and women’s side has reached in Olympic competition. The United States has also hosted three World Cups with the support of its members and strong organizational abilities. From a coaching standpoint in the United States, more classes are continually being offered around the country, and the number of licensed, well-educated trainers and managers is larger than ever. The education level among coaches has been tailored to match the expanding pool of talent in the U.S. U.S. Soccer continues to set positive trends for referees in CONCACAF, with reinvigorated focus on education and training, including the realm of professional referees. In 2012, the Professional Referee Organization (PRO) was created to manage the referee program in professional soccer leagues in the U.S. and Canada. The creation of PRO has been designed to increase the quality of officiating in U.S. and Canadian professional leagues, develop more professional quality officials at a younger age and develop officials who will represent the United States and Canada in FIFA competitions. Participation in soccer continues at high levels among both youth and adults, with more than 4.3 million registered players among the 24 million participants in the sport, according to the FIFA Big Count. For more information on all U.S. Soccer programs, visit the official organization website at ussoccer.com.

64 2015 NASL Media Guide Amway Canadian Championship

The Amway Canadian Championship is the competition held annually since 2008 to crown the Canadian club champion. Since 2014, two NASL sides compete along with MLS squads for the Canadian crown, which also doubles as qualifier into the CONCACAF Champions League. After winning the first-leg (2-1) of the 2014 semifinal over the Montreal Im- pact, FC Edmonton were just seconds away from a berth to the Canadian Final despite trailing in the return-leg (3-2) over the defending champion. However, a penalty kick goal scored by the Impact on the last play of the match eliminated NASL side. The winner of the 2015 Amway Canadian Championship will qualify for the 2016-2017 CONCACAF Champions League.

The Championship

Golden Years Following the creation of the North American Soccer League (NASL) in 1968, the league’s championship game was initially known as the NASL Final until 1974. The , , , New York Cosmos, , and were crowned champions after winning their respective NASL Finals, which were composed of either a single game, home-and-away playoff, or best-of-three series. The exception was in 1969 when a championship game didn’t even take place, and the were crowned the league winners after amassing the highest regular season point total. The NASL also recognized the two champions from 1967 – NPSL’s Oakland Clippers and USA’s Los Angeles Wolves - prior to the league’s formation.

Soccer Bowl The origin of the NASL Soccer Bowl began in 1975 when Commissioner sought a neutral-site championship event similar to the NFL Super Bowl. Unlike the Super Bowl, the Soccer Bowl was not denoted by Roman numerals, instead, the last digits of the year would be used to brand the competition for that year (example: Soccer Bowl ‘75). In 1984, the league changed the neutral-site format to a best-of-three series played at each team’s home field. That year the event was promoted as the Soccer Bowl Series ‘84, though it was still generally acknowledged as the Soccer Bowl. The Tampa Bay Rowdies were the first team to lift the Soccer Bowl trophy in 1975 Coaching Stats when they defeated the Portland Timbers, 2-0, at San Jose’s Spartan Stadium. Coach (# Seasons) – Victories Former Portuguese striker Eusébio led the Toronto Metros- to the Soccer Bowl in 1976 to become the first Canadian side to win a NASL Championship. The following year, Brazilian forward and three-time World Cup winner, Pelé, concluded his playing career by leading the New York Cosmos to their first Soccer Bowl victory, posting a 2-1 win over the Seattle Sounders at Portland’s Civic Stadium. The Cosmos would repeat as champions in front of a record crowd of 74,091 at , defeating the Rowdies, 3-1, for the Soccer Bowl ’78 crown. Giants Stadium would once again serve as the stage for the Soccer Bowl in 1979. The Vancouver Whitecaps became the second Canadian team to win a NASL Championship after defeating the Rowdies, 2-1. The Cosmos reclaimed the Soccer Bowl Trophy the following year in 1980 after a 3-0 blanking of the Fort Lauderdale Strikers at Washington, D.C.’s RFK Stadium. After losing the 1981 title to the at Toronto’s , the Cosmos captured their fourth Soccer Bowl and fifth overall NASL Championship the following year with a 1-0 shutout win over the Seattle Sounders at San Diego Stadium. Vancouver became the second Canadian city to host the Soccer Bowl, as the Tulsa Roughnecks topped the Toronto Blizzard, 2-0, to claim the 1983 title at BC Place Stadium. The Soccer Bowl format then changed from a single-match to a best-of–three series. The Sting won their second league title by defeating the Blizzard in the first two matches, at Chicago’s and Toronto’s , for the 1984 championship.

83 2015 NASL Media Guide SOCCER BOWL HISTORY

Modern Era With the relaunch of the NASL in 2011, the NSC Minnesota Stars (now Minnesota United FC) and Tampa Bay Rowdies were crowned as the first two champions in 2011 and 2012, respectively. Playing the final over two legs, Minnesota overcame the Fort Lauderdale Strikers in 2011 and then lost to the Rowdies in penalty kicks in 2012. In 2013, the NASL Final was held as a single match for the first time since 1983. Under the new split-season competition format, the game featured the two season winners (Spring, Fall). The Fall Season Champions, the New York Cosmos, captured their sixth overall title by defeating the Spring Season Champions, the Atlanta Silverbacks, 1-0, at Atlanta Silverbacks Park. The Championship, the league’s four-team postseason tournament introduced in 2014, consisted of the season winners (Spring – Minnesota United FC, Fall – San Antonio Scorpions) along with the two teams with the best overall records (Cosmos, Strikers). The Scorpions captured their first Soccer Bowl trophy after defeating the Strikers, 2-1, at their home ground, Toyota Field, in The Championship Final. The Soccer Bowl trophy is the third oldest men’s professional outdoor soccer prize in the United States.
