Proper Language, Proper Citizen: Standard Linguistic Practice and Identity in Macedonian Primary Education by Amanda Carroll Greber A thesis submitted in conformity with the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Department of Slavic Languages and Literatures University of Toronto © Copyright by Amanda Carroll Greber 2013 Abstract Proper Language, Proper Citizen: Standard Linguistic Practice and Identity in Macedonian Primary Education Doctor of Philosophy 2013 Amanda Carroll Greber Department of Slavic Languages and Literatures University of Toronto This dissertation analyzes how the concept of the ideal citizen is shaped linguistically and visually in Macedonian textbooks and how this concept changes over time and in concert with changes in society. It is focused particularly on the role of primary education in the transmission of language, identity, and culture as part of the nation-building process. It is concerned with how schools construct linguistic norms in association with the construction of citizenship. The linguistic practices represented in textbooks depict “good language” and thus index also “good citizen.” Textbooks function as part of the broader sets of resources and practices with which education sets out to make citizens and thus they have an important role in shaping young people’s knowledge and feelings about the nation and nation-state, as well as language ideologies and practices. By analyzing the “ideal” citizen represented in a textbook we can begin to discern the goals of the government and society. To this end, I conduct a diachronic analysis of the Macedonian language used in elementary readers at several points from 1945 to 2000 using a combination of qualitative and quantitative methods. -

IN MEMORIAM SLOVO 61 (2011) HORACE LUNT (Colorado Springs, 12. rujna 1918. – Baltimore, 11. kolovoza 2010.) Horace Gray Lunt II. rodio se u Americi koja jedva da je poznavala slavi- stiku kao akademski predmet. Od brojnih doseljenika koji su u to doba još uvijek stizali prilično nesmetano iz slavenskih krajeva, jedni su nastavili njegovati jezik staroga kraja, masovno izdavali novine i knjige, služili se slavenskim jezicima u crkvama, društvenim i sindikalnim organizacijama, dok su drugi nastojali što brže prijeći na engleski radi potpune amerikani- zacije. Sveučilišta na kojima bi se mogle naučiti barem osnove ruskoga ili u očima Amerikanaca slabo izdiferenciranih južnoslavenskih jezika, među- tim, bilo je svega šačica. Priča se da je Lunt, stigavši na sveučilište Harvard 1937. godine, pokazao interes za ruski jezik i kulturu, ali da mu je nesuđeni mentor, povjesničar Rusije i jedan od prvih profesora slavenskih jezika uopće Samuel Hazzard Cross (1891.–1946.) svjetovao da se radije lati njemačke književnosti (iz koje je i diplomirao 1941.), jer da za slavista posla neće biti. U Sjedinjenim Državama Luntove mladosti ni opća lingvistika još nije bila šire priznata. Nju su umnogome unaprijedili etnolozi koji su se u dvadesetim i tridesetim godinama prošloga stoljeća sve intenzivnije bavili indijanskim kulturama i jezicima, ali je rijetko koji fakultet nudio studentima predavanja iz lingvistike kao samostalnoga predmeta. Nije bilo mnogo dodirnih točaka između novonastale antropološki orijentirane znanstvene lingvistike i fi lologije u europskom smislu, kao ni s jezicima Staroga svijeta. A 'Balkan Folk Dance'
DANS ÇALIŞMALARI ÖZEL SAYI a ‘Balkan folk danCe’ Daniela Ivanova-Nyberg phenomenon ın The unıTed sTaTes: a feW analyTıCal oBseRvaTıons1 The purpose of this paper is to share some analytical observations on Balkan folk dance2 activities in the United States. It is to present, together with documentary data, data from my experience as a folk dance researcher and dance teacher. It raises questions about the situation today in terms of participants, dance instructors and repertoire in comparison to the peak of Balkan folk dancing in the 1960s and ‘70s. It argues that the American Balkan folk dance phenomenon—a complex American cultural phenomenon—relates to factors like fashion. The repertoire today is also influenced by recent immigrants from the Balkans, among whom there are many professional musicians and choreographers, introducing sometimes neo-folk music and newly created choreographies. Background of This Paper It took several years and thousands of miles of travel before reaching the point when I could draw conclusions with self-confidence. Besides observations, notes, audio and video documents and active participation in a variety of music and dance events since 2003, I was asking people— folk dance lovers who were my hosts, drivers, food-providers, supporters (many of them, I am happy to say, became my friends later)—a variety of questions related to the American Balkan phenomenon. In parallel to informal conversations and formal interviews, in the period 2004- 2008 I collected data through a ‘Balkan Dance Questionnaire’. In the -

Slavic and German in Contact: Studies from Areal and Contrastive Linguistics Slavic-German language contacts are a very important part of the history of Slavic languages and at the same time of Slavic studies in general. Thorough investigation of these contacts allows us to follow not only the linguistic fortunes of the Slavs, but also their history. Despite years of research, many problems remain unsolved to date, and the history of the Slavic countries and their languages brings out new and unexplored issues related not only to major Slavic languages but also to languages such as Burgenland-Croatian, Kashubian, or the Sile- sian ethnolect (currently in the course of standardization). This led two Slavists – Elżbieta Kaczmarska (Assistant Professor at the University of Warsaw, a researcher in translation and contrastive studies of West Slavic languages) and Motoki Nomachi (Associate Professor at Hokkaido Uni- versity, a specialist in Slavic linguistics in general, dealing with issues of language contacts) – to start their cooperation on a joint project The Typology of Grammatical Changes in the Context of Slavic – Non-Slavic Language Contact. As part of this project, we organized a linguistic pan- el at the VIII World Congress of ICCEES in Stockholm in 2010. The dis- cussion centred on Slavic-German contacts. This collection of articles, which shows the complexity, but also the wealth of Slavic - German contacts, is the crowning of our work upon this theme. Articles in this volume can be classifi ed according to various crite- ria, such as the two groups refl ecting the authors' approaches – study of infl uences as a result of language contacts (Alanović, Browne, Nomachi, Pawischitz, Tambor) and contrastive and typological analysis (Rosen, Sicherl & Žele). -

This collection consists of more than 1,300 commercially-produced phonograph recordings (LPs, 78s, 45s) primarily from Eastern Europe. Ph.D. Thesis Manj a Stefanovic Depanment of Slavic Languages and Literatures University of Toronto, 2000 This dissertation focuses on variation in the accusative form in Serbian and Russian that in much of the previous research has been ascribed to marking of the category of animacy in Slavic languages that have the case system. Analysis of data fiom these two languages suggests that the accusative-genitive syncretism, which the scholars traditiondly associated with marking of the object's animacy, in fact marks its atypicality. -

Ethnic Dance Chicago (www.ethnicdance.net) Door County Folk Festival (www.dcff.net) Opsa Serbian/Turbofolk Open Circle 2/4 meter Translation: A spontaneous exclamation often used while dancing – no exact translation, but something like “whee!”, “yippee!”, or “ee-haw!” Opsa is in the genre of the Turbofolk form of music popular in parts of former Yugoslavia. Per Dick Crum circa 1993: Opsa is currently one of the most popular dances at Croatian & Serbian dance events in the major cities of the Upper Midwest & the Pennsylvania/Ohio area. Its melody is relatively recent, having been composed & recorded in former Yugoslavia about a decade ago. The origins of the dance per se are obscure. It seems to have arisen here in the U.S., possibly around Pittsburgh. On the other hand, its structure has the same 5-measure pattern as Vranjanka (Belo Lence, I Banu Ide, etc.). I first saw & learned it at the Tamburitza Extravaganza weekend in Los Angeles, 1993, where tamburitza players & fans of tamburitza music from all over the U.S. had gathered, and Opsa was played & danced dozens of times.
