  • Contemporary Literature from the Chinese Diaspora in Indonesia
CONTEMPORARY LITERATURE FROM THE CHINESE 'DIASPORA' IN INDONESIA Pamela Allen (University of Tasmania) Since the fall of Suharto a number of Chinese-Indonesian writers have begun to write as Chinese-Indonesians, some using their Chinese names, some writing in Mandarin. New literary activities include the gathering, publishing and translating (from Mandarin) of short stories and poetry by Chinese-Indonesians. Pribumi Indonesians too have privileged Chinese ethnicity in their works in new and compelling ways. To date little of this new Chinese-Indonesian literary activity has been documented or evaluated in English. This paper begins to fill that gap by examining the ways in which recent literary works by and about Chinese-Indonesians give expression to their ethnic identity. Introduction Since colonial times the Chinese have been subjected to othering in Indonesia on account of their cultural and religious difference, on account of their perceived dominance in the nation’s economy and (paradoxically, as this seems to contradict that economic - 1 - dominance) on account of their purported complicity with Communism. The first outbreak of racial violence towards the Chinese, engineered by the Dutch United East Indies Company, was in Batavia in 1740.1 The perceived hybridity of peranakan Chinese (those born in Indonesia) was encapsulated in the appellation used to describe them in pre-Independence Java: Cina wurung, londa durung, Jawa tanggung (‘no longer a Chinese, not yet a Dutchman, a half- baked Javanese’).2 ‘The Chinese are everywhere

    R. Feener A re-examination of the place of al-Hallaj in the development of Southeast Asian Islam In: Bijdragen tot de Taal-, Land- en Volkenkunde 154 (1998), no: 4, Leiden, 571-592 This PDF-file was downloaded from http://www.kitlv-journals.nl Downloaded from Brill.com09/30/2021 12:59:33AM via free access R. MICHAEL FEENER A Re-Examination of the Place of al-Hallaj in the Development of Southeast Asian Islam For decades, the academic study of Islam in Southeast Asia has been domin- ated by a preoccupation with the role of mysticism in the region. From the earliest descriptions in Raffles' History of Java of 1817 to the anthropological writings of Clifford Geertz (Geertz I960, 1968), the mystical orientation of Southeast Asian Islam has been assumed a priori. Such an orientation has dominated the contents of several Leiden dissertations, and eventually led to Professor Johns' thesis concerning the role of Sufi turuq in the Islamization of the region.1 While there is no denying that some schools of Islamic mystic thought have been influential in the development of Islamic civilization in Southeast Asia, it seems inadvisable to continue taking the 'mystical' nature of Islam in the region as a given. Rather, we should refrain from letting the nebulous term 'Sufism' bias us in our investigations of the actual situation in both its historical and contemporary contexts. It was just such a predisposition to find the 'mystical' in Southeast Asian Islam that was evident in the Dutch publications cited by Massignon in his Passion.2 Going by indications in this handful of studies, Massignon came to imagine a much more prominent role of 'Sufism', and of Hallajian elements therein, than it may have actually played.

  • Sejarah Sastra Indonesia

Hefner 1997; Jones 1980; Liddle 1996, 622-25; Muzaffar 1986; Schwarz 1994, 173-76; Tessler-and Jesse 1996). To date, representations of Indonesia's Islamic revival have featured forms of religious practice and political activity concerned with what in the Sufi tradition is called the "outer" (Zahir) expression of Islam: support for and observance of religious law (I. sya~iah,A. syari'at), including the practice of obligatory rituals. Thus commonly mentioned as evidence of a revival in Indonesia are such things as the growing numbers of mosques and prayer houses, the increasing popularity of head coverings (keradung, jilbab) among Muslim women and school girls, the increasing usage of Islamic greetings, the more common sight of Muslims excusing themselves for daily prayers and attending services at their workplaces, the appearance of new forms of Islamic student activity on university campuses, strong popular agitation against government actions seen as prejudicial to the Muslim community, and the establishment in 1991 of an Islamic bank.
