Frederick Bremer News

October 2017

What a fantastic start to the academic year! I would like to welcome the class of 2022 and our new staff who have recently joined us, as well as our older pupils and staff. I’m excited to announce that we are the first school in the borough of Waltham Forest to receive the Young Carers Bronze Award. I would like to thank Ms Davies, the School Counsellor and Family Support Coordinator, and Ms Jill Ennis from Borough of Waltham Forest Young Carers Project, without their help we would not have achieved this award. I would also like to thank all our staff for all their hard work to make sure that all our young carers achieve their full potential. A huge congratulations to Mrs Turner and 9 of our pupils past and present who were nominated for a Jack Petchey Award. They received their awards at the Walthamstow Assembly Hall earlier this month. We had a terrific Open Evening with so many great activities going on throughout the evening. We hope all those that attended had an awe-inspiring experience. We have also been celebrating Black History this October with great activities and influential role models including Olympic Medallist Asha Phillip. Additionally our Year 11s attended Progression Evening, where colleges and Sixth Forms could explain courses and offer prospectuses. Last but certainly not least, we have had our best GCSE results ever. The class of 2017 outdid themselves with all their hard working, reaping some outstanding results. 72% 9-4 (A*-C) in English Language 79% 9-4 (A*-C) in English Literature 62% 9-4 (A*-C) in Maths 17% of all GCSE results were grade A+/7+ We also had a few of our current Year 10s sit their Spanish GCSE with a total of 71% A*-C (9-5) 43% A-A* (9-8) We hope that our next half term is as successful as this one has been. Follow us on twitter: @FBSchoolE17 Facebook @frederickbremerschool Website: www.bremer.org.uk Attendance Matters Many of you will have received an e-Postcard congratulating your child on maintaining 100% attendance in these first few weeks of the new academic year.

The chart below shows the impact attendance has on a child’s final GCSE grades in English and Maths. As you can see, pupils with above 95% attendance scored significantly higher than those with below 80% attendance.

It is important that all parent/carer(s) work with the school to ensure a high percentage of attendance. As stated under Section 444 of the Education Act 1996, it is the legal responsibility of all parent/carer(s) to ensure their child attends the school at which he/ she is registered, regularly and punctually.

The very positive news is that the school’s attendance is on the verge of 95% for the term and heading towards our 96% target. Thank you for your support in achieving this.

On Wednesday 11th October, 25 of the highest-achieving Year 9 pupils experienced a rare insider’s look into the home of British democracy, the Houses of Parliament, complete with a full guided tour and special workshop on representation and voting. Pupils were welcomed into Parliament on a Wednesday, when Prime Minister’s Questions takes place, and pupils were keen to try and spot some of the many other famous MPs around! Pupils were led around the famous building, getting to visit the Queen’s Robing Room and the House of Lords as well as bumping into a number of MPs from around the country.

They then took part in a special workshop where they were able to understand first – hand how democracy works, by being placed into constituencies, creating their own political parties with slogans, writing a manifesto and voting for the party that they felt best represented them. The day finished off with the pupils choosing their own Prime Minister, a very respectable position! All in all, this was a huge success for Year 9, and, as well as gaining an insight into democracy, pupils were shown that a career in politics is not as impossible as it may have seemed before their visit.

We held our annual Progression Evening for Year 11s last Thursday 12th October. Over 20 providers came to present to our pupils. Providers ranged from Independent Sixth Form Schools to Apprenticeship Providers and Colleges.

Presentations were also held in our school hall discussing the application process for sixth form and support that the school can offer.

“I left with three different prospectuses for colleges that really suited my interests. I am now planning my applications.” Fabian

We would like to thank all the providers for coming to this event.

Also a big thanks to administration and support staff, Senior Leadership, the PTA and our attendees for making Progression Evening such a wonderful event.

Pupils set off from either Epping or Theydon Bois Stations and navigated across Epping Forest to their campsite. They camped, cooked their own food and navigated back to the starting point. At the end of their expedition the pupils were tired but delighted to have passed the test. Mr. Larkin commented ‘The pupils were an absolute credit to themselves, their families and the school’. The school is pleased that over 50 Year 10 pupils have put themselves forward for this years D of E programme.

The pictures are of pupils now in their 3rd week of learning. The specialist school is part of the creative curriculum, which is designed to allow pupils to engage in project based learning in a specialist environment. Pupils are developing skills such as team work, evaluation, creativity and independence. The Specialist Music School allows the pupils the opportunity to specialise in an instrument, participate in ensembles and performances including a choir and develop their theory skills. They work with 10 professional musicians who provide lessons and workshops. The specialist schools have been very successful over the past 3 years and have developed the skills of pupils, many of whom are now on GCSE Music courses and attending specialist Music schools on Saturdays. The pupils will now be participating in many events within the school and borough, performing as a choir and on their new instruments. They are also preparing for the upcoming school show, Hairspray. Henry Maynard Visit We had a visit from Henry Maynard as they are learning ‘about sound as vibration all half term in Science’. They came along to see our orchestra play as it gave them opportunity to hear a range of non-amplified instruments in a live setting. We had both the School Orchestra and Year 8 Creative Curriculum Orchestra play. Songs include ‘somewhere over the rainbow’ and ‘in the hall of the mountain king’. Young Carers Bronze Award

We have achieved a Bronze Award for our work in ensuring pupils don’t miss out on an education because they are young carers.

Young carers are responsible for emotional, practical or physical care for a parent, sibling or other family member who has a physical disability, mental health issue or substance misuse issue. The 2011 Census statistics revealed that there are just over 166,000 young carers in England, but research reveals that this is just the tip of the iceberg. The true figure could be closer to 700,000 young carers in England, equivalent to one in 12 school children many of whom are unrecognised and unsupported.

To achieve our Bronze Award we have demonstrated that we support young carers in many ways, including homework clubs and drop-in sessions with Ms Davies in our ‘Fresh Start’ room. Vital information about how to identify young carers is made available to all school staff, noticeboards and the school webpage lets pupils and their families know where to go for help.

If you or someone you know is a young carer, please speak to a member of staff you trust or a member of our Young Carer Team, Ms Davies, Mrs Shaldas or Ms Anderson. Budding architects in D&T! Mr Bullen would like to pass on his praise to the year 8 pupils who have made a fantastic start to their D&T project this term. In it pupils research what makes a SMART home, before producing a 2-point perspective drawing (and accompanying floor plan) to show what it looks like visually. From here they are then taught various skills within the building trade (how to wire a plug, how to lay bricks) to demonstrate their practical ability. Below is a small selection of pupils’ 2-point perspective work, which I am sure you will agree, look professional!

Practicing Practical's The year 11 Food Preparation and Nutrition pupils have been busy practicing their practical skills by making a selection of recipes and preparing for their first non-exam assessment due to take place on the 7th November. Pupils have been showing off some fantastic skills and flavour combinations in the food they’ve been producing.

Mrs Rodin

Follow us on twitter: @FBSchoolE17 Facebook @frederickbremerschool Website: www.bremer.org.uk Baking Bonanza The year 8’s have been busy making some fantastic breads in their practical lessons. There’s been some lovely aromas coming from the classroom and delicious looking variations of the pupils’ adaptations to a basic bread and a focaccia recipe.

If you would like to try and make our Focaccia bread recipe during the half term break the recipe is below. Please share with us your photos of food created at home by sending them to [email protected] . All pupils who share examples of their home cooked food will be re- warded with Bremer Chef badge for getting involved. Ingredients: 1 teaspoon caster sugar 1 (7g) sachet dried active baking yeast 75ml warm water 250g plain flour 2 tablespoons olive oil to coat the dough before letting it rise 1/4 teaspoon salt A handful of ingredients to top the focaccia bread such as herbs, onion or pepper slices, olives Method 1. Prep:30min › Cook:15min › Extra time:45min rising › Ready in:1hr30min 2. In a small bowl, dissolve the sugar and the yeast in warm water. This will activate the yeast. Let it stand until the mixture turns creamy, about 10 minutes. 3. In a large bowl, combine the yeast mixture with flour and stir it well to combine it together. Stir in ad- ditional water, 1 tablespoon at a time, until all of the flour is absorbed and a dough starts to form. When the dough has formed, turn it out onto a lightly floured surface and knead briefly for about 1 minute. 4. Lightly oil a large bowl, place the dough in the bowl and turn it and coat it with oil. Cover with a damp cloth and let rise in a warm place until the dough has doubled in volume, about 30 minutes. 5. Preheat oven to 240 C / Gas 9. 6. When the dough has doubled in size, turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface; knead it again briefly. Pat or roll the dough into a sheet and place it on a lightly greased baking tray. Press into the dough with your thumbs to create the classic Focaccia texture then brush the dough with oil, sprinkle with salt and add any toppings to decorate the bread. Bake focaccia in preheated oven for 10 to 20 minutes, depending on desired crispness. If you like it moist and fluffy, then you'll have to wait just about 10 minutes. If you like it crunchier and darker in the outside, you may have to wait 20 minutes.

The Old Vic partners with 40 secondary schools, engaging with up to 30 pupils in each school for the full academic year. The selected 30 pupils will receive 4 free workshops throughout the year and attend 4 performances for free! Well done to all those pupils who have been chosen for this amazing opportunity.

All Singing, All Dancing! We are extremely excited to announce that Frederick Bremer will be performing the musical Hairspray this summer. We have been holding audition for several weeks and have finally released the cast list. Everyone was eagerly awaiting to see who was cast as the leads. This is the first whole school musical the school has done in several years. If you did audition and didn't get a part there’s still time to be apart of the production. We have teams such as fundraising, tech, costume and props, choreography and many more. To find out more information please see Miss Gunning. Year 11 Win Again

It was another win for the Year 11 boys Basketball team against the Year 10 boys team. The teams played excellently and showed incredible sportsmanship. The game has given the teams great attitudes and respect for fellow players. Both teams have developed a healthy relationship with competition. Who will win next time?

Back of the Net!

The Year 11 boys football team are keeping their eye on the ball as they start this years football season. They have had a couple of outstanding games as they battle it out for an early lead in the Borough Championship. They have yet to lose a game, winning an astonishing 8– 2 against Leytonstone and a 3-1 lead against Rushcroft. This team have been our most successful football team yet being captained by Pedro.

Well done to the whole team, we hope to see more wins in the future.

Borough Cross Country We had an incredible time at the Borough Cross Country event this week. We are currently waiting the results to correlated. However, whilst we wait two of our pupils have been asked to join the borough cross country team. We look forward to seeing what else our cross country team will achieve next. Well done to everyone who took part and represented Frederick Bremer so well.

Black History Celebration This half term has been a busy one for all the pupils that have got involved in Black History Month. Students have taken part in a number of events aimed at celebrating Black culture and raising awareness. These activities range from raising money for Virunga Park in the Democratic Republic of Congo through creating Jamaican themed cakes, to making t-shirts and watching films. Departments across the school have engaged by ensuring that Black History has been embedded in their lessons and across the curriculum, making students aware of the great contribution made by Black artists, activists, scientists and Historians. Keep an eye out for our next newsletter where we will have more information about the activates that took place.

Another proud moment for Bremer took place on Tuesday 10th October as Mrs Turner and nine pupils were presented with their Jack Petchey Achievement Awards at Walthamstow Assembly Hall . They were all so proud collecting their awards on stage.

Over the course of a year the school nominates pupils to receive an Achievement Award. As well as attending the annual presentation evening where they are presented with a medal each pupil gets £250 to spend on something of their choice for the school. Each year we also nominate a member of staff to receive a Leaders Award.

We are about to start the process for nominating our next ten pupils to receive an award. If you know a pupil of this school that you think should be nominated please do let us know at [email protected]. Jack Petchey

Jack Petchey Speak Out Challenge! In the past 2 weeks, 30 year 10 pupils took part in the Jack Petchey Speak Out! Speech writing and performance workshop, delivered by the Jack Petchey Foundation. This is a great leadership and development opportunity – pupils were selected by the English teachers for the workshop. They displayed great motivation and aptitude for public speaking; everybody gave it their best, even those who did not like speaking in front of others. 5 pupils went through to the assembly round: Seher, Soham, Emilia, Sasha and Penny. They all performed phenomenally well and videos of their speeches are available to watch! Emilia was our overall winner, Penny our runner up against a tough panel of judges. Emilia will go on to represent Bremer at the regional final, on the 22nd November at Lammas School. Feel free to join us and support her, well done Emilia! Y10 Forest Photography Trip

We had another very successful photography trip to Epping Forest with the year 10 GCSE Art group in September. The purpose was to practise photography skills using composition, texture and light, which will provide inspiration for drawings and printing techniques for their final submissions and sketchbooks. Having practised with the cameras and lighting in the classroom, the pupils really seemed to learn to ‘look deeper’ and found some very interesting imagery to record.

Y10 Trip to Kew Gardens for Natural Form Project The Y10’s enjoyed a great boost to their Natural Form project this week when they visited Kew Gardens. The pupils were very impressed with the variety and scale of the planting and they responded with some excellent primary observational studies which will form part of their Art GCSE. In addition, we were lucky enough to visit The Hive – an interactive collaboration between artists and scientists based on the activity within the bee hives at Kew. We were also fortunate to be able to view a temporary sculpture exhibition which was scattered throughout the park - a perfect setting for the large and varied sculptures on display. The pupils were a credit to the school and we were proud to accompany them on this trip.

The Y11 Art pupils are currently working on their project ‘Recreation/Identity’ and the exhibitions at Tate Modern proved very inspiring and will enable them to extend their work into more directions as well as introduced them to a number of new artists relevant to their project. There was an extra treat in store in the Turbine Hall which is currently hosting an exhibition based on play and collaboration which the pupils took part in with enthusiasm (and the staff felt duty bound to join them). We then moved on to view some of the amazing and ever changing street art around brick lane which offered additional inspiration for their project. It was a busy and tiring day, but all the pupils worked hard and behaved impeccably.

Some may even choose 2 languages in Year 9, thanks to our dynamic creative curriculum. Last year, we experimented a fast-track Spanish course for our keen Year 9 pupils. It was so popular and proved so efficient, that we decided to enter them for their GCSE in Spanish. The results were “fenomenal”!!! 71% A*-C (9-5) 43% A-A* (9-*) The majority of pupils who took part in the Spanish GCSE are now taken another language at GCSE. We can’t wait to see how they do. Muy bien Year 9 and gracias Mrs Shaldas for your dedication in getting our pupils to be the best they can!

Jeans for Genes Day We raised over £200 for Jeans for Genes by holding cake sales and selling denim ribbons. We had some fantastic lessons on 22nd September including our Year 7s taking part in a gene model making and designing workshop as part of their creative curriculum. We hope to raise even money next year for a great cause. School Gateway

Please ensure you regularly access your School Gateway account. We will be sending the first academic report of the year, and exam timetables soon, and without an activated Gateway account, you may not be able to access these documents.

If you are having trouble logging in, it may be because the School doesn’t have your current email address and mobile number in our database. Please contact the reception on 020 8498 3340 or [email protected] and we’ll update your details.

School Gateway is a great way for parent/carers to keep up to date with what’s going on at school and help you monitor your child’s academic progress and conduct.

Show My Homework

In an effort to keep parent/carers as informed as possible we have been making more use of some features on Show My Homework. You may have noticed that we are now using SMH to send notifications of events such as School Conference and our recent staff inset day.

By downloading the SMH app on your smartphone you can also sync your child’s homework calendar and school notifications, to your phone calendar, allowing you to keep fully informed of events at school.

Please also be aware we have begun a trial whereby we notify you of detentions set for homework that has not been completed. We are trialling this with the Maths department. You will only receive such notifications if your child fails to complete homework on time; these detentions will all be of a duration of 20 minutes. Notifications will appear on your SMH account as a comment from a particular piece of homework.

Therefore, we ask that you regularly check your Show My Homework parent account for notifications of events, and comments regarding detentions. If you have not already set up your SMH parent account, you can find your activation PIN on your School Gateway account in the ‘Assessment’ section under ‘Pupil Passwords’.

Please note that for head of year and senior leadership team detentions, we will continue to send emails through School Gateway.
