Lammas School and Sixth Form NEWSLETTER Spring 2020

Monday 24th February 2020

Dear Parents and Carers

We are so proud to have heard from ex-students about their recent successes, having gone on to great things following their time at Lammas School. Two of our past students feature later in this newsletter, both demonstrating that hard work and commitment pays off. Both Zohra and Azi are clearly destined to be highly successful, and this is down to putting in the hours and being resilient.

As we draw nearer to exam season, it is vital that students attend school every day. A lesson missed can mean the difference between a pass or fail, and to be successful in future life students must understand how vital study, preparation and positive mental attitudes are. Every student, and especially those nearing exams, have clear guidelines on how to prepare at home, using the online resources as well as essential reading as directed by class teachers. All parents who were not able to make the recent Y11 Parents’ Evening will be contacted directly to discuss current attendance and progress, with an emphasis on how best to support students at home. The extra effort put in at this time of year will enable your children to be successful, and ensure that when they open the envelope with their exam results in August, they have clear pathways to a next step in learning which will take them to happy and productive futures. Mike Davis, the social commentator, tells us that the urban population of the earth outnumbers the rural, and that this happened sometime in the last decade. This has huge implications for our children, as the urban population further increases. How will this fact inform careers, homes and wellbeing? There is much we don’t know about what will be expected of our children in the future, but what is indisputable is to be successful they will need to be great communicators, creative problem solvers and able to form positive relationships with others. Our commitment, to Wide Horizons ensures that we continually design opportunities to develop these essential skills. Have a lovely week. Graham Clifford Head Lammas School and Sixth Form

Well done for this season and roll on next season.

Year 8 Girls – Borough Champions Year 8 successfully defended the title they won in year 7 31-16, with team lead by their 2 STAR players Siobhan Daley & Cheyenne Fell they comfortably won the Final and also on a high note Cheyenne was crowned MVP of the match, well done girls and roll on next year Year 8 Boys – Borough finalists The year 8 boys team came on leaps and bounds from last season, when they did not qualify for the play offs. What a difference a year has made with the team buying into the basketball we do at Lammas and looking like an excellent squad in year 8. They went unbeaten in the league beating Leytonstone, Buxton, Norlington and George Mitchell on their way to winning the group. The semi-final followed in similar fashion with a comfortable win against Fredrick Bremer School. Unfortunately the final wasn’t to be losing against a strong Leytonstone team to finish up Waltham Forest runners up. A fantastic achievement nonetheless and the team should be very proud. Squad: Ayman, Edgar, Aretas, Zurell, Abdul, Radoslav, Dorian, Andre, Dhanyal and Idiris. Year 10 Girls – Borough Finalists

Year 10 Girls Basketball report Year 7 runners-up. Year 8 Champions, Year 9 (no games), Year 10 Runners Up This is the history of the up and down times of the current Year 10 Girls basketball team. A group of girls with lots of individual potential but with little team ethic and had not really played for a year. Expectations were low with the idea for the season being one of playing as hard as we can and let's see where that gets us. This was going to be a short season as only 4 teams had entered the league. Along with Lammas we had Forest, Holy family and Frederick Bremer. Our first game of the season was away to Frederick Bremer. A team we had not played before but one that consisted of several tall and athletic players. Comparing this to our relatively small team this looked like it would be quite a tough task. And that it truly was. The game was tied on the final buzzer meaning we had to go in to dreaded over-time with the girls coming out as 23 – 19 winners. Phew. A lot of tired legs and minds after that one but confidence was boosted by the high level of effort and determination showed by all. Game 2 – Away to Holy Family. The current borough champions and the team we beat in the Year 8 Final back in 2018. This was a very low scoring contest with Holy family coming out as 12-5 winners. Defences were on top in a very physical contest which pushed the girls physically and mentally. The promising part was the number of good opportunities that were created by the team, meaning that, with a little bit of care when scoring or with the final pass we would compete with these opponents the next time we play them. The next time was in the final. Forest withdrew and with only 3 teams in the league it was decided by the powers that be that it would be a straight final. Lammas vs Holy Family 2. Wilder vs Fury 2 had nothing on this. Holy family started off positively and gained an early lead. The girls fought back and closed the gap to 1 point by the start of the final quarter. With both teams getting tired and making more mistakes the final quarter was an extremely tense contest with Holy Family pipping Lammas at the very end. It has been a pleasure to coach this team and with some improvements with the shooting/lay-ups the gold medal will be held by Lammas next season. Well done to Yagmur, Shasmeen, Bianca P, Leena, Bianca B, Khadija, Ceren, Aaliyah, veronica, Gabriele and Muneerah. On Tuesday 11th February both the year 8 and 9 girls won their Waltham Forest football league. The years 9 qualified in 4th for the semi finals and the years 8 as 1st place. Both teams came through to win their respected competitions!

Lammas year 9 girls were fantastic in the 7aside football finals night taking the gold medals and being crowned champions. The semi final was a tough game against Chingford Foundation who like Lammas had some very talented girls. It was an end to end game of football but Lammas took the lead through clinical striker Ma-Leiha who smashed a long range effort into the bottom corner. Chingford equalised through a goal mouth scramble but Lammas kept their heads and Tashae calmly slotted the ball home in the second half to win 2-1.

The final was against Willowfield and the scoreline did not reflect the first half. Lammas piled the pressure on but could not break a resilient Willowfield defence and found themselves 1-0 down somehow. The girls did not stop trying and were rewarded with goal from Tashae to draw 1-1. After 5 minutes of extra time the game was still level and went to penalties. Two amazing saves from keeper keren and penalities scored by Tashae and Ma-Leiha meant Lammas were deserved champions of the girls football league.

Solid performances at the back from Latoya and Iustina throughout the night kept the goals out!

Regina did not stop running and created lots of chances! Tianna was excellent stopping opposition midfielders in front of the defence! Tashae was a constant threat up front and scored two great goals! Ma-Leiha was a handful all night with her skills and frightening shots! keren was almost impossible to beat in goal - Miss Safe Hands! Shout out to Brianna, Zahra and Chene who couldn't make the final but were integral to the girls reaching this stage! The year 8 girls came into finals night looking to defend their title that they won in year 7. With Lammas, Chingford and Heathcote making up the final 3 and having a round robin competition to decide the overall champions thankfully it was Lammas who came out on top! First up was Heathcote and Chingford who drew 1-1. Then Lammas took on Chingford to win 2-1 with goals from Siobhan Daley and Cheyenne Fell. This meant that whoever won the match between Lammas and Heathcote would be crowned champions. Despite the Lammas pressure with countless attempts on goal Heathcote were the first to score on the counter attack. This meant that Heathcote were ending in first place but with just 45 seconds left Cheyenne intercepted a ball from the goalie beat two defender to calmly slot away for an equaliser to the relief of all the girls. This draw put Lammas in first place and for the second year in a row were crowned as champions! Well done to all the following: Elif and Tanae- Solid defending throughout and excellent when called upon in goal! Ashlyn- Never stops trying, strong in the tackle making it difficult for the opposition to score! Mounia- Moves around making life difficult for the opposition defenders! Tasneem- Breaks up play and maintains possession superbly! Siobhan- Solid throughout and a real threat to the opposition! Cheyenne- twinkle toes herself. Never lets the team down when called upon! During the final week of last term I held the PlayStation 4 FIFA 20 Tournament, yet again this event brought students and staff together for a bit of competitive enjoyment after school.

On Monday 10th February 2020 the tournament kicked off in the Library with 30 players all registered. The games were set to last no longer than 10 minutes. The seats were all arranged in a theatre-like theme with the main two players in action just in front. The gamers were under a load of pressure due to the huge audience that were there. Players were anxious, palms were sweaty. Well done to the well behaved players who were sitting patiently in a calm, collected manner, a bit of banter here and there but it was ultimately a good sight, seeing students all highly engaged with this activity.

Monday 10 February 2020 - Round 1

Tuesday 11 February 2020 – Round 1 & 2

Thursday 13 February 2020 – Quarter Finals

Friday 14 February 2020 - Semis & Finals!!!

Dorian (Year 8) who finished third last year surprisingly lost to Edgaras (Year 8) in the First Round! This was the first shock of the tour- nament

Szymon (Year 11) who finished second last year was knocked out by Dhillon (Year 11) in the second round. Another shock

2017 and 2019 Winner Louis (Year 11) had a chance to make it three titles in as many years, he also had to play more games than anyone else to prove his dominance. He won all five games comfortably including smashing Darius D (Year 11) 5-2 in the Finals.

So yet again, CONGRATULATIONS to Louis for proving that he is the LAMMAS FIFA GOAT (greatest of all time) with his third trophy. He has maintained his bragging rights around the school.

Thank you to everyone who participated this year and hope to see you again next year.

See it, Believe it, Achieve it! Sixth Form Alumni News

I recently heard from Azi Bham - ex student of Lammas Sixth Form - who is now in his final year of studying Law at Kings College, London. He reports that he is on track to achieve a First. Azi has continued his work with Salaam Peace and following his graduation this year he will be working full-time for Salaam Peace as director of strategy/operations. He is also keen to return to Sixth Form to support Psychology students with their A Levels.

Azi was also recently recognised for his work with Salaam Peace and was recipient of Young Leader with Impact Award.

The organisers wrote “I’m delighted to be able to tell you the judges have selected Azi as one of the recipients of the Young Leader with Impact Award this year. Our judging panel was hugely impressed both by the work Azi does for Salaam Peace, as well as the obvious pride your organisation has about the way in which he contributes to the organisation and the wider community. Your application was a powerful testament to the positive difference young people can make to life in London, even in the most challenging circumstances”. It's the 4th award in the last 12 months Salaam Peace has been recognised with, following on from the Diana Award, the London Sports Award and the Sports Journalists Award.

Azi's advice to current students is " to simply give it all they have so they don't have any regrets or 'what if' moments come results day" We wish Azi the best of luck in his finals and we hope to see him soon! Sixth Form Alumni News

There has been a lot going on in Sixth Form over the last couple of weeks.

On Monday 3 February, we were really lucky to receive a visit from Sophie Baldry who is the Executive Assistant to the Group Corporate Affairs Director at Lloyds Banking Group.

Sophie was representing Lloyds but is also a Women of the Future Ambassador and is an award winner with Women in Banking and Finance.

The assembly was a really special assembly and we invited all female students in Sixth Form. The talk was very inspirational and Sophie talked to us about her career journey from school from where she is now. She spoke of how she had attended the University of Edinburgh and has completed her MA in Business Studies Sophie really impressed on the girls about the importance of believing in themselves and their capabilities. She coached them through how to choose future studies and careers and of the importance of choosing something they really enjoy. Sophie also spoke about building skills along the way - through education and career - and also of your personal development. Sophie spoke clearly about the finance industry and gave some pointers for those students who would be seeking those careers
