Furthermore, my sincere thanks to Mr. , who introduced me to the medieval history of our splendid university. It is difficult to look for gratitude words for all the guidance, plenty of advice and each moment you have dedicated to this project. For all the suggestions, the hard-working mornings of transcription and for being a pillar of strength during the elaboration of this project. Afterwards, I would like to express my gratitude to Mrs for all the effort done. She had the goodness and the goodwill to encourage me to translate the Latinisms. Without her, those statuses could not have been interpreted. Last but not least, thanks to my family. They helped me with the draft, perfecting the faces and shadows. On the whole, to my entire family, who supported me and cheered on me whenever I needed it. Again, thanks all of you for everything you've done. Abstract This project offers an approach to the medieval epoch, particularly to social and daily life in the Estudi General of Lleida. As Charlies H. Haskins stated, “universities, like cathedrals and parliaments, are a product of the Middle Ages.” Consequently, the aim of this project is to give light to this field, mostly unknown to the general public. Firstly, the main features of the high centre of studies such as the positions, the faculties and life of students are explained. In order to elaborate the practical part, original documents in the municipal Archive of Lleida have been analysed. Furthermore, the methodology of search and processing information is all extracted from an extensive bibliography from books of the Middle Ages here in Lleida. What’s more, transcriptions and translations of antique documents were used to collect unique data about the especial laws and regulations that ruled students inside the Estudi General, even the ones related to crime. The conclusions of this research show that the privileges granted to students were a way of exceeding the limit, leading them to commit crimes, mischiefs and to cause all sort of conflicts. The Council of Europe and the European Parliament have decided to establish this year in order to raise public awareness of European values and history and strengthen a sense of community identity. Cultural heritage includes not just monuments, landscapes, traditions, transmitted knowledge and expressions of human creativity, but also collections kept and managed by museums, libraries and archives, all of which are means of presenting, preserving and valuing the past. European cultural heritage is bountiful and highly valuable, offering numerous opportunities for conveying its values. This heritage must be preserved from environmental and physical pressures, the increasingly prevalent digital environment and the illegal trafficking of cultural assets, all of which are threats that need to be met. The main goals of the European Year of Cultural Heritage are: to promote cultural diversity, intercultural dialogue and social cohesion; to highlight the economic contribution of cultural heritage and creativity, particularly for small and medium-sized businesses, and local and regional development, while stressing the role of cultural heritage in terms of the European Union’s external relations, as well as the prevention of conflicts and, where necessary, the reconciliation and reconstruction of cultural heritage that has been damaged or destroyed.

Es ist ihnen gelungen, innerhalb weniger Jahrzehnte eine bedeutende, lokale und überregionale Aktivität auszuüben. Ursprünglich, im kleinen Rahmen bei religiösen Prozessen dargeboten, gelten die Menschentürme heute als „Nationalsport“ für die Katalanen und verkörpern ein wichtiges Symbol ihrer eigenständigen Kultur und der Zusammengehörigkeit Kataloniens. Nach ersten Auseinandersetzungen mit dieser Bewegungskultur, ist es ein Bedürfnis herauszufinden, wo der Ursprung der Castells liegt - unter den Historikern ein sehr umstrittenes Thema. Es gibt unterschiedliche Theorien und Hypothesen über die Herkunft der Menschentürme, aber bis heute keine exakte Antwort. Fest steht, dass die Entwicklung der Castells den Verlauf der Geschichte Kataloniens reflektiert. Stieg die Wirtschaft, dann „stiegen“ auch die Türme, stürzte die Gesellschaft in eine Rezession, dann „bauten“ auch die Castells ab. Nun stellt sich die Frage, seit wann genau es diesen Brauch gibt und wo er seine Wurzeln hat.

Upon first glance, it appears to be an old town enclosed by an ancient stone fortress. After entering through those century-old gated walls, my friends and I stepped on the uneven cobblestone streets and admired the multi-colored, hole-in-the-wall shops. I was studying abroad with Semester at Sea during the fall of 2017, and my friends and I were ecstatic to explore Spain, the first port of our voyage. Our feet carried us up and down crumbling stairs in narrow alleyways—a maze that we could get lost in for hours. The rich history of the town juxtaposes the youthful laughter that flits around its sharp corners. The families who reside here attend the church on the top of the hill every Sunday. It’s a quaint, quiet place. But once a year during the humid month of September, the little town of Tarragona transforms into the thundering Santa Tecla Festival, a two-week long celebration in honor of the town’s patron saint. The streets are filled with music and dancing. The smell of fresh paella and red wine wafts through the air. The buzzing anticipation is palpable as everyone awaits the festival’s crowning moment. I stood in awe amidst a crowd of thousands as I witnessed the formation of courageously tall human pyramids in Tarragona’s town square.
