En rueda de prensa, el funcionario del Consejo nacional para la prevención y Control del Sida (Conasida) se refirió a las terapias para combatir el virus causante del llamado “mal del siglo” a base de dobles o triples combinaciones de medicamentos. Estrada Aguilar, quien asistió a la Quinta Conferencia de Retrovirus e Infecciones Oportunistas, realizada en febrero pasado en Chicago, Illinois, señaló que en ese encuentro se conocieron diversos estudios sobre inhibidores de transcriptasa inversa o de protesa. “Los resultados que en la referida Conferencia se concluyó que combatir el Virus de Inmunodeficiencia Humana (VIH) con una combinación de medicamentos, es más efectivo que la terapia de un solo fármaco. En la rueda de prensa, Estrada Aguilar hizo la presentación en México de un nuevo fármaco: la Stavudina D4T, que tiene el nombre comercial G Zerit, utilizado para el control del SIDA. Dijo que cuando se le combina con otros medicamentos, la Stavudina D4T tiene alto perfil de tolerancia, actividad en el líquido cefalorraquídeo y bajo potencial para la inducción de resistencia, así como un efecto potenciador antiviral en enfermos de SIDA. Además, la administración de terapia combinada de manera oportuna y adecuada, reduce de manera significativa el número de infecciones oportunistas y sus implicaciones, la mortalidad y el costo asociado con la atención médica de los pacientes infectados por el VIH. El funcionario del Conasida confió en que los resultados de la Conferencia efectuada en Illinois servirán como guía, sobre todo en América latina y en todo el mundo, para la elección de un régimen de tratamiento más potente basado en la terapia combinada. Las aves descenderían de los dinosaurios de modos diversos Nuevas evidencias de un parentesco cercano entre las aves y los dinosaurios fueron desenterradas por investigadores estadounidenses en el desierto de Gobi y en Madagascar. El hallazgo es presentado por sus descubridores en una edición reciente de la revista de ciencia británica “Nature” (tomo 392, página 275). Precisó que las deficiencias en un apersona de la arginina es por la presencia de amoníaco excesivo, lisina excesiva, crecimiento rápido, embarazo, traumatismo, deficiencia de proteínas y mala nutrición. Según investigaciones científicas, se detectó que la arginina inhibe el crecimiento de tumores, acelera la curación de las heridas y como complemento alimenticio tiene utilidad terapéutica en una enfermedad dolorosa de la vejiga conocida como cistitis intersticial. Explicó que hay enfermedades que son producidas por fuertes contracciones musculares y aquí es donde entra la arginina, ya que este aminoácido tiene la capacidad de hacer que el cuerpo manufacture más óxido nítrico, el cual relaja los espasmos musculares. Dolly se convierte en madre Dolly, el primer animal clonado a partir de una célula adulta, se convirtió en madre de una cría llamada "Bonnie". El Instituto Roslin de Escocia hizo el anuncio después de que diversos informes de prensa pronosticaron el nacimiento de la cría de Dolly. Dolly fue creada al unir el núcleo de una célula de una glándula mamaria de un animal adulto a la célula de otra oveja, usando corriente eléctrica. Un grupo internacional de expertos presidido por Ignazio Ciufolini de la Universidad de Roma y unos colegas españoles y estadounidenses lograron confirmar ese efecto y su valor con la ayuda de los satélites Lageos y Lageos II, de la agencia espacial estadounidense NASA.

Sawyers. Students begin by watching the online video clip, Cancer as a Genetic Disease (http://www.hhmi.org/biointeractive/ cancer-genetic-disease-video-highlights), and completing the accompanying Video Worksheet. After that assignment, instructors can decide which of the two activities to use in class. Activity 1: Classifying Cancer Genes In Activity 1, students identify the locations on chromosomes of genes involved in cancer, or “cancer genes.” Using the set of 139 Cancer Gene Cards and associated chromosome posters, students discover the following: • About 140 human genes are currently known to be involved in cancer. • Cancer genes are located throughout the human genome. • The proportion of oncogenes versus tumor suppressor genes is roughly equal. • The main cellular processes affected by mutations in cancer genes are cell survival, cell fate, and genome maintenance. • One way to visualize genetic data is to map genes onto chromosomes. The rules and nomination form are made available in their official site. As per the rules, anyone can nominate a candidate online and all submissions must be completed by a third party. Nominations will be accepted through October 2, 2013. This year the foundation will award up to five prizes worth $3 million each, sponsored by Sergey Brin and Anne Wojcicki, Mark Zuckerberg and Priscilla Chan, and Yuri Milner. All prizes will be awarded for research aimed at curing deadly diseases and extending human life, with special attention to recent discoveries. One prize sponsored by Sergey Brin and Anne Wojcicki is aimed specifically at advancements in Parkinson's disease research.
