Friends of Japan Tradition Meets Modernity— In this report we introduce the life and work of a friend of Japan. the Japanese Way of Living and Working My first encounter with a Japanese approach to business was in 1995 in Silicon Valley, California. It was then that I was asked to help establish the American arm of one of the best- known Japanese electronics companies. Although my knowledge of Japanese culture was limited, I was determined to work for a Japanese company. I strongly felt that working for a Japanese company would allow me to immerse myself in a new challenge and learn a new way of thinking and doing. An enjoyable part of working for a Japanese multi-national is the way they take delight in making the customer happy. This isn’t just a company mantra; it is an important part of doing business. And, while speed is important, the Japanese cherish a deliberate way of working. Teamwork is also highly regarded, while the individual is allowed to feel that they can make a valued contribution. The Japanese also prioritize personnel development over creating products. When I think about it, of all the Japanese principles of business I’ve encountered, I mostly revere the following: contribution to society, fairness and honesty, cooperation and team spirit, untiring efforts for improvement, courtesy and humility, adaptability, and gratitude. These are the seven core values of Konosuke Matsushita, the Japanese industrialist who founded Panasonic in 1918, and this was the company I would later help establish in the United States. I truly believe these principles are also a core part of Japanese life. -

MEDIA RELEASE WORLD’S LEADING SCIENTISTS AND TECHNOLOGISTS TO GATHER AT THE GLOBAL YOUNG SCIENTISTS SUMMIT 2021 Summit will host 21 eminent scientists including Nobel Laureates, who will engage and share first-hand insights in science and research with over 500 young scientists from 30 countries 6 JANUARY 2021, SINGAPORE – The National Research Foundation Singapore (NRF) will host the ninth edition of the Global Young Scientists Summit (GYSS), which will see the gathering of the world’s foremost scientists and technologists engage and inspire aspiring young scientists. Held virtually from 12 to 15 January 2021, the eminent scientists will also discuss the latest advances in research and how they can be used to develop solutions to address major global challenges. The Summit will be graced by Singapore’s Deputy Prime Minister and Chairman of NRF, Mr Heng Swee Keat, who will deliver the opening address. The GYSS is a multi-disciplinary event covering the disciplines of chemistry, physics, biology, mathematics, computer science, and engineering. CDD: Could you please describe your personal background, who were your parents, where were you born and what happened in your early years? My father and mother were both born in Paris in 1896. During the first World War (1914–1918), my father, Maurice Meunier, who spoke English fluently, acted as interpreter for the British troops who came to France. In 1919, he married and left with his new wife for China having found a job in a French bank in Peking (now known as Beijing). He spent some 22 years in China and Japan, eventually becoming Manager of the Franco-Chinese Bank in Shanghai. Besides English, he also spoke Spanish flu- ently, and learned Mandarin Chinese which he could write, and also Japanese which he wrote and spoke. THE PATIENTS OF THE BRISTOL LUNATIC ASYLUM IN THE NINETEENTH CENTURY 1861-1900 PAUL TOBIA A thesis submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements of the University of the West of England, Bristol for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Faculty of Arts, Creative Industries and Education March 2017 Word Count 76,717 1 Abstract There is a wide and impressive historiography about the British lunatic asylums in the nineteenth century, the vast majority of which are concerned with their nature and significance. This study does not ignore such subjects but is primarily concerned with the patients of the Bristol Asylum. Who were they, what were their stories and how did they fare in the Asylum and how did that change over our period. It uses a distinct and varied methodology including a comprehensive database, compiled from the asylum records, of all the patients admitted in the nineteenth century. Using pivot tables to analyse the data we were able to produce reliable assessments of the range and nature of the patients admitted; dispelling some of the suggestions that they represented an underclass. We were also able to determine in what way the asylum changed and how the different medical superintendents altered the nature and ethos of the asylum. One of these results showed how the different superintendents had massively different diagnostic criteria. This effected the lives of the patients and illustrates the somewhat random nature of Victorian psychiatric diagnostics. The database was also the starting point for our research into the patients as individuals. Many aspects of life in the asylum can best be understood by looking at individual cases. -
