Although it is not known if the gold flag inspired the Puerto Rican baseball team players to dye their hair blonde ahead of their final match against the U.S. in the 2017 World Baseball Classic, the color gold was used as a ritual for unity and bounding. This move inspired Puerto Ricans to the point that many fans on the island started to dye their hair blonde. Although Puerto Rico did not win, the “Team Rubio” (Blond Team) stole the show at the finals and created the unity the people needed during tough times. I have not seen the gold variant flag flown, only in street art across the island.
