FLAG INSTITUTE WILLIAM CRAMPTON LIBRARY INDEX TO FLAGMASTER 1-161 FLAG INSTITUTE BULLETIN HERALDRY SOCIETY FLAG SECTION NEWSLETTER The journal Flagmaster was first published by the newly founded Flag Institute in 1971. It appeared more or less quarterly from Issue 001-159 (2019), then twice-yearly from Issue 160 (2020). Flagmaster succeeded the Heraldry Society Flag Section Newsletter (4 issues - Spring 1969 to Winter 1970) and was briefly replaced in 1974/5 by the Flag Institute Bulletin. The Bulletin consisted of several sections - Civic Flags, Correspondence, Flag Institute News, Military Flags, New Books, New Flags, Political Changes - each paginated separately and not necessarily included in every issue. After publication ceased, the five issues of the Bulletin were renumbered retrospectively as Flagmaster Issues 19-23. Flagmaster then resumed publication at Issue 24. Issues of Flagmaster are numbered in bold. Issues of the Flag Institute Bulletin are prefixed FIB. Issues of the Heraldry Society Flag Section Newsletter are prefixed HS. Jänner 2007 On the Quaternary reptilian fauna of Bashkortostan (South Urals, Russia) Zur Quartären Reptilienfauna von Baschkortostan (Südural, Rußland) VlNER KHABIBULLIN KURZFASSUNG Die Geschichte der quartären Reptilienfauna von Baschkortostan (Südural, Rußland) wird im Zusammen- hang mit einem kurzen Überblick zur Entwicklung des Klimas, der Landschaften und der Vegetation dargestellt. Fünf Reptilienarten {Lacerta agilis, Anguis fragilis, Lacerta vivipara, Natrix natrix, Vipera berus) sind für das Spätquartär des Untersuchungsgebietes anhand von Fossilbelegen nachgewiesen. Die neuzeitliche Herpetofauna des Urals begann sich im späteren Pliozän herauszubilden. Die gegenwärtige Reptilfauna entwickelte sich im mitt- leren Holozän, mit der Rückkehr der Reptilien aus den eiszeitlichen Refugialräumen. Die Gebirgsketten des Urals sowie die Tätigkeit des Menschen hatten auf die Ausbildung der gegenwärtigen Kriechtierfauna der Region keinen bedeutenden Einfluß. ABSTRACT The history of the Quaternary reptilian fauna of Bashkortostan (South Urals, Russia) is described and the development of climate, landscapes and vegetation are briefly reviewed. Five late Quaternary fossil reptile species {Lacerta agilis, Anguis fragilis, Lacerta vivipara, Natrix natrix, Vipera berus) had been identified for the region. When I discussed this with your government, it offered to facilitate such an investigation. Earlier, your government had requested me to investigate the situation of Russian language education in Ukraine. The government of Ukraine also declared itself willing to facilitate such an investigation. In the summer of last year I have studied the situation of Ukrainian language education in your country, assisted by two experts, Prof. Bowring from the United Kingdom and Mr. Zhekov from Bulgaria. My conclusions are based on visits to Moscow, St. Petersburg and Tyumen, where conversations took place with local and regional authorities and with representatives of Ukrainian organisations. In Moscow extensive consultations took place with governmental authorities. While in Moscow, I also received representatives of Ukrainian organisations in Krasnodar, Ekatarinburg and Moscow Oblast. Spain I. Introduction “The flag is the embodiment, not of sentiment, but of history. It represents the experiences made by men and women, the experiences of those who do and live under that flag.” Woodrow Wilson1 “FLAG, n. A colored rag borne above troops and hoisted on forts and ships. It appears to serve the same purpose as certain signs that one sees on vacant lots in London—‘Rubbish may be shot here.’” Ambrose Bierce2 The power of the flag as a national symbol was all too evident in the 1990s: the constitutional debate over flag burning in the United States; the violent removal of the communist seal from the Romanian flag; and the adoption of the former czarist flag by the Russian Federation. In the United States, Texas alone possesses a flag and seal directly descended from revolution and nationhood. The distinctive feature of INSIDE / SOMMAIRE Page both the state flag and seal, the Lone Star, is famous worldwide because of the brief Editor’s Note / Note de la rédaction 2 existence of the Republic of Texas (March 2, 1836, to December 29, 1845).3 For all Solid Vexillology 2 the Lone Star’s fame, however, there is much misinformation about it.

The flag adopted to represent this alliance was a red-white-red horizontal triband with a seven pointed gold star. Between 1825 and 1952 Dubai, Kalba and Fujairah also joined the alliance The United Arab Emirates was founded in 1971 when seven of the emirates of the previous Trucial States joined together to create a single independent country. The Pan-Arab green, red, white and black colours were used for the flag which is a green-white-black horizontal tricolour with a vertical red band on the right. The government and private schools raise the flag and play the national anthem every morning.     The virtual battle: Flags in Georgian marine paintings Barbara Tomlinson Abstract The 18th century saw the development of an English school of marine painting following the example of the Dutch in the previous century. When representing naval battles, artists needed to handle numerous technical details including the depiction of British squadronal colours, distin- guishing flags and signal flags. This paper examines selected actions painted by Samuel Scott (1701/2-1772), Nicholas Pocock (1741-1821), Thomas Whitcombe (c.1752-1827) and William Anderson (1757-1837) and ask - how accurate were these artists, how did they research their paintings, how did they display flags for dramatic effect and who was their intended audience? The resources of the National Maritime Museum’s collections used to illustrate this subject in- clude prints, drawings and documents. The British maritime victories of the sailing navy era were immortalized by contemporary artists. Originally a Dutch genre, by the middle of the 18th century, marine pictures were also produced by British painters who specialised in these scenes. I would like to consider the relationship between the reality and the representation with particular reference to the way the artist shows British flags, concentrating on some of the less well-known battles. One painter who took considerable pains to include accurate detail was Nicholas Po- cock. A sketchbook survives compiled by Pocock during the Battle of the Glorious 1st of June when he was able to observe the action directly from the frigate Pegasus. These small and indistinct views remind us that in contrast to the way vessels are shown in marine paintings, in reality, everything would have been much more spread out and much further away.
