Fünf Reptilienarten {Lacerta agilis, Anguis fragilis, Lacerta vivipara, Natrix natrix, Vipera berus) sind für das Spätquartär des Untersuchungsgebietes anhand von Fossilbelegen nachgewiesen. Die neuzeitliche Herpetofauna des Urals begann sich im späteren Pliozän herauszubilden. Die gegenwärtige Reptilfauna entwickelte sich im mitt- leren Holozän, mit der Rückkehr der Reptilien aus den eiszeitlichen Refugialräumen. Die Gebirgsketten des Urals sowie die Tätigkeit des Menschen hatten auf die Ausbildung der gegenwärtigen Kriechtierfauna der Region keinen bedeutenden Einfluß. STRUGGLE FOR EAST-EUROPEAN EMPIRE: 1400-1700 The Crimean Khanate, Ottomans and the Rise of the Russian Empire* HALİL İNALCIK The empire of the Golden Horde, built by Batu, son of Djodji and the grand son of Genghis Khan, around 1240, was an empire which united the whole East-Europe under its domination. The Golden Horde empire comprised ali of the remnants of the earlier nomadic peoples of Turkic language in the steppe area which were then known under the common name of Tatar within this new political framework. The Golden Horde ruled directly över the Eurasian steppe from Khwarezm to the Danube and över the Russian principalities in the forest zone indirectly as tribute-paying states. Already in the second half of the 13th century the western part of the steppe from the Don river to the Danube tended to become a separate political entity under the powerful emir Noghay. In the second half of the 14th century rival branches of the Djodjid dynasty, each supported by a group of the dissident clans, started a long struggle for the Ulugh-Yurd, the core of the empire in the lower itil (Volga) river, and for the title of Ulugh Khan which meant the supreme ruler of the empire. Toktamish Khan restored, for a short period, the unity of the empire. When defeated by Tamerlane, his sons and dependent clans resumed the struggle for the Ulugh-Khan-ship in the westem steppe area. During ali this period, the Crimean peninsula, separated from the steppe by a narrow isthmus, became a refuge area for the defeated in the steppe. -

When I discussed this with your government, it offered to facilitate such an investigation. Earlier, your government had requested me to investigate the situation of Russian language education in Ukraine. The government of Ukraine also declared itself willing to facilitate such an investigation. In the summer of last year I have studied the situation of Ukrainian language education in your country, assisted by two experts, Prof. Bowring from the United Kingdom and Mr. Zhekov from Bulgaria. My conclusions are based on visits to Moscow, St. Petersburg and Tyumen, where conversations took place with local and regional authorities and with representatives of Ukrainian organisations. In Moscow extensive consultations took place with governmental authorities. While in Moscow, I also received representatives of Ukrainian organisations in Krasnodar, Ekatarinburg and Moscow Oblast. Moscow gained possession over a previously independent political entity with a multiethnic and multiconfessional populace. The Muscovite political system adapted to the unique circumstances of its expanding frontier and prepared for the continuing expansion to its east through Siberia and to the south down to the Caspian port city of Astrakhan. Muscovy’s government attempted to incorporate quickly its new land and peoples within the preexisting structures of the state. Though Muscovy had been multiethnic from its origins, the Middle Volga Region introduced a sizeable Muslim population for the first time, an event of great import following the Muslim conquest of Constantinople in the previous century. Kazan’s social composition paralleled Moscow’s; the city and its environs contained elites, peasants, and slaves. While the Muslim elite quickly converted to Russian Orthodoxy to preserve their social status, much of the local population did not, leaving Moscow’s frontier populated with animists and Muslims, who had stronger cultural connections to their nomadic neighbors than their Orthodox rulers. The state had two major goals for the Middle Volga Region. -

Mythical Spirits of the Volga-Ural Forests

In Tatar and Chuvash folk literature myths about mythological beings are often stories written in prose, describing su- pernatural creatures and spirits. These stories describe “encounters” between humans on the one hand and various mythological creatures, on the other. Among these Arçura/Şüräle is a Forest Spirit which has a very significant role in folk narratives of not only the Tatars and the Chuvash, but widely in the folk culture of other Volga-Ural peoples. These mythological beliefs help people of the Volga- Ural region perceive themselves as a part of the universe. In this paper, the etymology of the word Arçura/Şüräle is investigated; then its characteristics and its comparison with some other neighbour- ing Volga-Ural Finno-Ugrian and shamanic Turkic-Mongol spirits are examined. Introduction Folk beliefs, which have their source in history, culture, and geography, are among the most significant factors determining the identity and characteristics of a people. These beliefs which carry traces of paganism, above all show peoples’ ways of think- ing, traditional ties with the environment and nature in early ages, whilst each ethnic group has its own type of myths and beliefs related to mythical creatures. -
Genetic Analysis of Male Hungarian Conquerors: European and Asian Paternal Lineages of the Conquering Hungarian Tribes

Differentiating between the tribes is not possible based on archaeology or history, because the Hungarian Conqueror artifacts show uniformity in attire, weaponry, and warcraft. We used Y-STR and SNP analyses on male Hungarian Conqueror remains to determine the genetic source, composition of tribes, and kin of ancient Hungarians. The 19 male individuals paternally belong to 16 independent haplotypes and 7 haplogroups (C2, G2a, I2, J1, N3a, R1a, and R1b). The presence of the N3a haplogroup is interesting because it rarely appears among modern Hungarians (unlike in other Finno-Ugric-speaking peoples) but was found in 37.5% of the Hungarian Conquerors. This suggests that a part of the ancient Hungarians was of Ugric descent and that a significant portion spoke Hungarian. We compared our results with public databases and discovered that the Hungarian Conquerors originated from three distant territories of the Eurasian steppes, where different ethnicities joined them: Lake Baikal- Altai Mountains (Huns/Turkic peoples), Western Siberia-Southern Urals (Finno-Ugric peoples), and the Black Sea-Northern Caucasus (Caucasian and Eastern European peoples). -

In the article, I discuss beliefs concerning both human and supernatural – what is supposed to be frightening for humans and what is supposed to be frightening for spirits, ghosts and demons. In daily interaction with the supernatural this mutual ‘fright’ can be regarded as an important part of communication. In this article, I discuss what is believed to be the most frightful for humans and for supernatural agents, what kinds of image this fear relates to and what the roots of these beliefs are, as well as the popular ways to confront and defend against ‘frightening’ in Mongolian folklore. My research is based on fieldwork materials collected during annual expedi- tions in different parts of Mongolia (2006–2017) and Mongolian published sources such as Mongolian newspapers and journals, special editions of stories about encounters with the supernatural. Islam: State and Religion in Modern Europe by Patrick Franke From the early Middle Ages until the beginning of the twentieth century, Islamic states were an integral part of Europe's political geography. Throughout the modern period the Ottoman Empire, with its capital in Istanbul, was the most important Islamic power on the continent. The Ottoman conquest of south‐eastern Europe, which was already well advanced in the 15th century, initiated a phase of Islamization that came in several waves before ending in the 19th century. Other important centres of European Islam were the Iberian Peninsula (until the early 17th century), the Russian Volga‐Ural region, and the Crimea. The decline of the European Islamic states (Granada, the eastern European Khanates, the Ottoman Empire) put many Muslims under the rule of non‐Islamic states, each of which reacted with the development of its own particular policies for dealing with Islam. Notes Indices Citation Islamic Statehood in Europe between 1450 and 1950 In the mid‐15th century a number of small Islamic states existed on the edges of various parts of Europe (➔ Media Link #ab). The southern Iberian Peninsula1 was home to the Nasrid Emirate of Granada, which, however, was in decline in this period. In 1485 the Christian states of Castile and Aragon began their systematic conquest of the Emirate, at a time when the Muslims were exhausting their energies in a civil war.
