ADULT FAITH FORMATION Continuing religious education for adults striving to grow in their faith All About Lent—fasting “At that time Jesus was led by the Spirit into the desert to be tempted by the devil. He fasted for forty days and forty nights, and afterwards he was hungry.” (Matthew 4:1). In the early Church and, to a lesser extent still today, there were two fast s. There was the "total fast" that preceded all major feasts or sacra mental events. The ancient na me for this fast was "statio," from the verb "sto, stare" to sta nd watch, on guard or in vigil. The second fast was a fast of abstinence from certain foods, e.g., meats or fats. This was more an act of self-discipline and self-control. The statio fast was total and a means of watching and waiting…i.e. for something. The fast of abstinence was more general and personal, to he lp oneself be more disciplined or self-controll ed. The total fast is still ke pt today prior to reception of Holy Commun- ion. Following Holy Communion, the total fast ceases because Jesus had explicitly stated that we don't fast when the bridegroom is here, in other words, what we're keeping vigil for has arrived, the wait is over. Fasting is alway s preparatory. Christian fasting i s revealed in an interdependence between two events in the Bible: the "breaking of the fast" by Adam and Eve; and the "keeping of the fast" by Christ at the beginning of his ministry.

Humanity's "fall" away from God and into si n began with e ating. God had proclaimed a fast fro m the fruit of only one tree, the tree of knowledge of good and evil (Gen. 2:17), and Adam and Eve broke it. Fasting is here connected with the very mystery of life and death, of salvation and damnation. Food perpetuates life in this physical world, which is subject to decay and death. But God "created no death" (Wis. 1:13). Humanity, in Adam and Eve, rejected a life dependent on God alone for one that was dependent rather on "bread alone" (Dt. 8:3; Mt. 4:4; Lk. 4:4). The whole world was given to m an as a kind of food, as a means to life, but "life" is meant as communion with God, not as food ("Their god is their belly." Phil. 3:19). The tragedy is not so much that Adam ate food, but that he ate the food for its own sake, "apart" from God and to be independ ent of Him. Believing that food had life in itself and thus he could be "like God." And he put his faith in food. This kind of existence see ms to be built on the principle that m an does indeed live "by bread alone." Christ, however, is the new Adam. At the beginning of his ministry in the Gospel of Matthew, we read, "When He had fasted 4 0 days and 40 nights, He became hun- gry." Hunger is that stat e in which we realize our dependence on something else—when we face the ulti mate question: "on what does my life depend?" Satan tempted both Adam and Christ, saying: Eat, for your hunger is proof that you depend entirely on food, that your life is in food. Adam believed and ate. Christ said, "Man doe s NOT live by bread alone" (Mt. 4:4; Lk. 4:4). This liberates us from total depend- ence on food, on matter, on the world. Thus, for the Christi an, fasting is the only means by which man recovers his true spiritual nature. In order for fasting to be effective, then, the spirit must be a part of it. Christian fasting is not concerned wit h losing weight; it is a matter of prayer and the spirit. And because of that, because it is truly a place of the spirit, true fasting may well lead to temptation, and weakness and doubt and irritation. In other words, it will be a real fight between good and evil.

Next week: Part VI—The Readings SAINTS IN TRAINING Formation for young children learning the Faith to become saints The Agony in the Garden The First Sorrowful Mystery

The Sorrowful Mysteries of th e Rosary follow Jesus’ Passion story, when he suffered and died on the Cross for our sins. Through Mary’s eyes, we can see Jesus’ Sacrifice and God’s love for the world. He loves all of us SO much that He gave His only Son, so that we may one day join Him in Heaven. During this Season of Lent, we will reflect on those mysteries as we prepare for Good Friday. The Sorrowful Mysteries are trad itionally prayed on the Tuesdays, Fridays, and Sundays of Lent

The first S orrowful Mystery is the Agony in the Garden. Then he said to them, “My soul is sorrowful even to death. Re- main here and keep watch with me.” He advanced a little and fell prostrate in prayer, saying, “My Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass from me; yet, not as I will, but as you will.” Matthew 26

Jesus was betrayed by His friend, Judas, and knew He was about to face an awful humiliation and painful suffering and death. He was scared and sad, and He entered into prayer. How can we all imitate Jesus’ prayer when we are sad and afraid? And even in His fear, Jesus offers to do God’s will. He knows the will of the Lord is the best plan, no matter how scary it may seem.

SAINTS OF THE WEEK Sunday, March 8: St. Simon Berneux—Bishop and Martyr St. Simon Berneux was born in Château-du-Loir, France on May 14, 1814. When he was seventeen years old, he entered the Seminary of Foreign Missions. On May 20, 1837, he was ordained to the priesthood and began serving as theology professor at the seminary. Simon served as a foreign missionary in Vietnam beginning in January of 1841. Shortly after his arrival, he was charged with proselytism and sentenced to death. The sentence was postponed and he was released from prison on March 12, 1843. Simon returned to France for a brief time, but he soon resumed his missionary activity in Man- churia. On December 27, 1854 he was consecrated a bishop and appointed Apostolic Vicar of Korea. He traveled to Korea in January 1856. After ten years of preaching the Catholic Faith, Simon was arrested, tortured and sentenced to death. He received martyrdom through beheading on March 8, 1866 in Saenamteo, Korea. Monday, March 9: St. Catherine of Bologna—Abbess and Mystic St. Catherine was born to a noble family in Bologna, Italy on September 8, 1413. She grew up in the court of the Duke of Ferrara where she received an excellent education. Catherine felt called to the religious life and left behind her wealth at 13 years of age. She joined the convent of Corpus Domini in Ferrara where she be- came a Franciscan tertiary. As a nun, Catherine was known for her holiness and humility, often taking on the most menial of jobs. In 1432, she left the convent to co-found a Poor Claires . She founded a second monastery in 1456 where she served as Abbess. Catherine regularly experienced visions including one where Our Lady placed the Christ child in Catherine’s arms. Catherine’s body remains incorrupt to this day. Tuesday, March 10: St. Anastasia the Patrician—Virgin and St. Anastasia was born in Constantinople in the six th century. She lived and served in the court o f Emperor Justinian. When she became aware that Justinian had a romantic interest in her, she left the court to become a nun at a convent in , Eg ypt. He appeared to forget about Anastasia for a while, but followin g the death of his wife, Theodora, h e began to pursue her again. A nastasia left the convent and met up with a monk named Daniel. Learning about her situation, Daniel permitted Anastasia to dress as a male monk and live in a private cell as a hermit out in the desert. He visited her eve ry other week and had one of his followers bring her food and water. Anastasia spent the remaining 28 years of her life in private prayer.

Wednesday, March 11: St. Teresa Margaret—Virgin St. Theresa was born Anna Maria Redi on July 15, 1747 to a noble family in Arezzo, Italy. When she reached nine years of age, she was sent to live at a Benedictine boarding school in Florence where she received her education. She returned home in the spring of 1764 and began living as a Carmelite in her own home in the hopes of becom- ing a Carmelite nun. Later that fall, she admitted into the Monastery of St. Teresa in Florence. She made her sol- emn vows in March 1766 where she took the name “Teresa Margaret of the Sacred Heart.” Theresa served as nurse in the monastery and cared for her fellow sisters’ physical and mental health. She fell seriously ill and passed away on March 11, 1770. Thursday, March 12: St. Seraphina—Virgin St. Seraphina was born to a poor fa mily in San Gim ignano, Italy in 1238. Throughout her childhood, she devoted her time to prayer and penance. Her life was spent inside her fam ily home, except for those tim es when she left to attend Mass. In 1248, Seraphina came down with a severe illness which left her deformed and paralyzed. Preferring to offer up her suffering, she asked to rest on a wooden pallet instead of a comfortable bed. Both of her parents passed away during her sickness, but she continued to grow stronger in the Faith. Many villagers visited her to receive encouraging words from the young girl. On March 4, 12 53, Seraphina had a vision of St. Gregory the Great, to whom she had a devotion. He predicted to her that she would pass away eight days later on March 12th, which she did. Numerous miracles have been attributed to Serapahina’s intercession.

Friday, March 13: St. Agnellus of Pisa—Confessor St. Agnellus was born to a noble family in Pisa, Italy around the year 1195. He was personally received by St. Francis of Assisi into his new order and was sent by Francis to Paris to found a Franciscan mission. While in Paris, Agnellus founded a convent and served as the custos. He later returned to Italy and was then sent by Francis to England. Agnellus arrive d in Dover on September 12, 1224. He acquired a b uild- ing in Oxford and establish ed the F ranciscan English Province at that site. Agnellus befriended King Henry III and successfully prevented a civil war by making peace between the king and the Earl Marshal.

Saturday, March 14: St. Mathilda—Widow St. Mathilda was born in E nger, Saxony around the year 894. When she was a young child, she was placed under the care of the nuns at the monastery of Erfurt, where her grandmother served as abbess following the death of her husband. Mathilda lived a simple life of prayer and manual labor in the monastery, until she en- tered into an arranged marriage with a nobleman named Henry in 913. Her new husband quickly was made a Duke, and then he became King of Germany in 919. As queen, Mathilda cared for the poor and sick, assisted those in prison, and worked to make converts to the Catholic Faith. Following the death of her husband, she funded the construction of three convents and a monastery, and resided in one of the convents until she died.
