  • Prolog (Round Two)1
Appendix 2: Prolog (round two)1 Note on the genre: A famous writer once said that all happy families are alike, whereas the miseries of unhappy ones are diverse. This observation also holds true for saints’ lives. (I have tried to present a diverse selection, but you must have noticed patterns.) Another comparison may be made to iconography: proper icons do not contain superfluous information. Even unnecessary details in the background distract from the main subject - the serene faces; whereas the disproportionate anatomy, so shocking to the unaccustomed eye, is of no consequence. Likewise, if a person displayed his faith in martyrdom, the details of his previous life are immaterial. The focus of the narrative is entirely on what is pertinent and the seeming exaggerations do not deter from this, they underline it. If the words spoken during a passionate trial seem scripted and unbelievable, remember: the ancients had no knowledge of quotation marks and the text simply conveys the essence of what transpired. These people were subjected to experiences that we cannot imagine - this we readily believe; so to give us some idea of that experience, the writer uses imagery that we cannot easily imagine. Moreover, if a thousand people are tortured is it not evident that the bodies of a few will display marvelous tenacity? And is it not “marvelous” to see a man or woman fearless of death, when you, the ancient writer, have countless times watched criminals running away from soldiers and beasts at the local arena? Prolog contains about a thousand short martyrological vitas that closely follow the same pattern; these form the core of the book.

  • St. John Orthodox Church
From the Fathers (and others): This is the great work of man: always to take the blame for his own sins before God and to expect temptation to his last breath. St Anthony the Great St. John Orthodox Church A Parish of the Antiochian Orthodox Christian Archdiocese of North America The Christian has no reason to have in his heart any ill-feeling whatever against anyone---such ill- feeling, like every other evil, is the work of the Devil ; the Christian must only have love in his heart ; and as love cannot think of evil, he cannot have any ill-feeling against others. For instance, I must not think that anyone else is evil or proud without having positive reasons to think so, or I must not think that it will make him proud if I show him respect, or that if I forgive him he will again offend me and will mock at me. We must not let evil in any form nestle in our heart ; but evil generally appears in too many forms. St John of Kronstadt We count on God's mercy for our past mistakes, on God's love for our present needs, on God's sovereignty for our future. St Augustine The Savior began the work of our salvation with fasting. In the same way all those who follow in the footsteps of the Savior build on this foundation the beginning of their endeavor, since fasting is a weapon established by God. St. Isaac the Syrian The way of the Church is LOVE; it differs from the way of the legalists.

  • A History of Trans-People
Chapter 2 A History of Trans-People Trans-people have existed throughout history. The following list is a select few of the more notable of them. They are sorted by the year they transitioned, not when they were born. Trans and transsexual are recent terms, so historically many were called by other names such as transvestite. Other chapters are planned for openly trans politicians. Here they will be sorted by political “rank” (municipal, state/province, federal, international) and by year of office when they were openly Trans. There are thousands more who have not made these, or any other, list. There are many online lists of transgender celebrities, most of whom are not included here. I have arbitrarily excluded heterosexual transvestites such as Virginia Prince. Most of the following is taken from Wikipedia, where not indicated otherwise. 3000 through 2000 BC in ancient Assyria, there were homosexual and transgender cult prostitutes, who took part in public processions, singing, dancing, wearing costumes, sometimes wearing women's clothes and carrying female symbols, even at times performing the act of giving birth. Some Assyrian priests were gay men who cross-dressed. Freely pictured art of anal intercourse, practiced as part of a religious ritual, dated from the 3rd millennium BC and onwards. 2000 BC, Hijras have a recorded history of over 4,000 years recorded history in the Indian subcontinent from antiquity onwards as suggested by the Kama Sutra (a Hindu text on human sexual behavior written sometime between 400 BCE and 200 CE). In South Asia, a Hijra is a transgender individual who was assigned male at birth.
