I already knew finding the patrology concerning just the original Greek and Syriac texts is nothing short of a researcher’s black hole. TRICLINIUM PAUPERUM: POVERTY, CHARITY AND THE PAPACY IN THE TIME OF GREGORY THE GREAT AN ABSTRACT SUBMITTED ON THE FIFTEENTH DAY OF MARCH, 2013 TO THE DEPARTMENT OF HISTORY IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS OF THE SCHOOL OF LIBERAL ARTS OF TULANE UNIVERSITY FOR THE DEGREE OF DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY BY ___________________________ Miles Doleac APPROVED: ________________________ Dennis P. Kehoe, Ph.D. Co-Director ________________________ F. Thomas Luongo, Ph.D. Co-Director ________________________ Thomas D. Frazel, Ph.D AN ABSTRACT This dissertation examines the role of Gregory I (r. 590-604 CE) in developing permanent ecclesiastical institutions under the authority of the Bishop of Rome to feed and serve the poor and the socio-political world in which he did so. Gregory’s work was part culmination of pre-existing practice, part innovation. I contend that Gregory transformed fading, ancient institutions and ideas—the Imperial annona, the monastic soup kitchen-hospice or xenodochium, Christianity’s “collection for the saints,” Christian caritas more generally and Greco-Roman euergetism—into something distinctly ecclesiastical, indeed “papal.” Although Gregory has long been closely associated with charity, few have attempted to unpack in any systematic way what Gregorian charity might have looked like in practical application and what impact it had on the Roman Church and the Roman people. I believe that we can see the contours of Gregory’s initiatives at work and, at least, the faint framework of an organized system of ecclesiastical charity that would emerge in clearer relief in the eighth and ninth centuries under Hadrian I (r. 772-795) and Leo III (r.

McDonald, III JCL, Pastor Deacon George Canney November 1, 2020 All Saints’ Day Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the Kingdom of heaven. —Matthew 5:3 Solemnity of All Saints All Hallows’ Day, the Solemnity of All Saints, or All Saints’ Day is a celebration of all Catholic saints held on November 1 each year. “On this solemnity, we recall the holy men and women who, having completed their earthly journeys, now live forever with God. These saints, though not canonized, offer us models of abiding faith and love of God and neighbor” (Essential Guide to Seasons and Saints, 109). In the Catholic Church, we are called to imitate and venerate saints because of their heroically virtuous lives, martyrdom, or their offering of life for others. But, what does veneration mean and why do we pray to the saints? Veneration of the saints fosters our faith in God and does not detract from it. Rather, our faith in God is strengthen by our relationship with our brothers and sisters in the faith who are in heaven. The Church teaches that by imitating Elizabeth Wang the virtues lived by the saints, the saints bring us closer to Christ. When we ask the saints to This Week at St. Mary’s Church pray for us, we ask them to join their wills with Sun. Esteban Julio Vázquez Deacon Kerry Luke Gonser Web Page: www.saintnicholasburton.org Office: 810-744-0070 The Gospel according to Saint Mark 16: 9-20 (3rd Matins Gospel) Now when Jesus rose early on the first day of the week, He appeared first to Mary Magdalene, out of whom He had cast seven demons. She went and told those who had been with Him, as they mourned and wept. And when they heard that He was alive and had been seen by her, they did not believe. After that, He appeared in another form to two of them as they walked and went into the country. And they went and told it to the rest, but they did not believe them either. Later He appeared to the eleven as they sat at the table; and He rebuked their unbelief and hardness of heart, because they did not believe those who had seen Him after He had risen. And He said to them, “Go into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature. He who believes and is baptized will be saved; but he who does not believe will be condemned. And these signs will follow those who believe: In My name they will cast out demons; they will speak with new tongues; they will take up serpents; and if they drink anything deadly, it will by no means hurt them; they will lay hands on the sick, and they will recover.

  • JANUARY 20, 2019 THIRTY -FOURTH SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST Ven
SAINT EUTHYMIUS THE GREAT ...In his quest for solitude, the saint explored the wilderness of Ziph and settled in the cave where David once hid from King Saul. St. Euthymius founded a monastery beside David’s cave and built a church. During this time St. Euthymius converted many monks from the Manichean heresy; he also healed the sick and cast out devils. Visitors disturbed the tranquility of the wilderness. Since he loved silence, the saint decided to return to the monastery of St. Theoctistus. Along the way they found a quiet level place on a hill, and he remained there. St. Theoctistus went to St. Euthymius and requested him to return to the monastery, but the monk did not agree to this. However, he did promise to attend Sunday services at the monastery. St. Euthymius did not wish to have anyone nearby, nor to organize a cenobium or a lavra. The Lord commanded him in a vision not to drive away those who came to him for the salvation of their souls. After time, the brethren again gathered around him, and he organized a lavra. In 429, when St. Euthymius was 52 years old, Patriarch Juvenal of Jerusalem consecrated the lavra church and supplied it with presbyters and deacons. In 431, the Third Ecumenical Council was convened to combat the Nestorian heresy. St. Euthymius rejoiced over this affirmation of Orthodoxy. In 451, the Fourth Ecumenical Council condemned the heresy of Dioscorus, who asserted that in Jesus Christ is only one nature, the divine; during the Incarnation, Christ’s human nature is swallowed up the the divine nature.
