St. Mary's Catholic Church St. Mary’s Catholic Church Located at the Corner of First & Polk, Moscow, Idaho Rev. Joseph F. McDonald, III JCL, Pastor Deacon George Canney November 1, 2020 All Saints’ Day Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the Kingdom of heaven. —Matthew 5:3 Solemnity of All Saints All Hallows’ Day, the Solemnity of All Saints, or All Saints’ Day is a celebration of all Catholic saints held on November 1 each year. “On this solemnity, we recall the holy men and women who, having completed their earthly journeys, now live forever with God. These saints, though not canonized, offer us models of abiding faith and love of God and neighbor” (Essential Guide to Seasons and Saints, 109). In the Catholic Church, we are called to imitate and venerate saints because of their heroically virtuous lives, martyrdom, or their offering of life for others. But, what does veneration mean and why do we pray to the saints? Veneration of the saints fosters our faith in God and does not detract from it. Rather, our faith in God is strengthen by our relationship with our brothers and sisters in the faith who are in heaven. The Church teaches that by imitating Elizabeth Wang the virtues lived by the saints, the saints bring us closer to Christ. When we ask the saints to This Week at St. Mary’s Church pray for us, we ask them to join their wills with Sun. ST. PETER CATHOLIC CHURCH 95 MARKET STREET MOUNT CLEMENS, MICHIGAN 48043 November 1, 2020 Phone: (586)468-4578 Website: www.stpetermtclemens.com My Dear Friends, This weekend we celebrate the feast of All Saints. On Monday the feast is that of All Souls. From my point of view, there is a reason why these two feasts are celebrated together. They both have to do with God’s children. In the “old days” when I was growing up All Saints was directed towards honoring all of those whom the Church had declared as saints, those who were defined as being in heaven. I would like to expand this focus in two ways. The first way is to see sainthood in a little more broad spectrum. All of us have known men and women, boys and girls whom we loved very much. They might not have been perfect but we loved them because of who they were and what they meant to us. When we experienced their passing we often got a chance to reflect on their entire lives as far as we knew them. We had a chance to put them into the context of their entire lives. Deep inside we felt that God loved them too. We also came to the understanding that God forgives much more than sometimes human beings do. This is why He is God. He loves all of His Children that much. This led us or still leads us to believe deeply that these people are in heaven. This would make them saints. The Church might never declare them to be saints as such but we deeply feel that they are with God and we have the hope that one day we too shall be with God and them in the Kingdom.
