ST. PETER CATHOLIC CHURCH 95 MARKET STREET MOUNT CLEMENS, MICHIGAN 48043 November 1, 2020 Phone: (586)468-4578 Website: www.stpetermtclemens.com My Dear Friends, This weekend we celebrate the feast of All Saints. On Monday the feast is that of All Souls. From my point of view, there is a reason why these two feasts are celebrated together. They both have to do with God’s children. In the “old days” when I was growing up All Saints was directed towards honoring all of those whom the Church had declared as saints, those who were defined as being in heaven. I would like to expand this focus in two ways. The first way is to see sainthood in a little more broad spectrum. All of us have known men and women, boys and girls whom we loved very much. They might not have been perfect but we loved them because of who they were and what they meant to us. When we experienced their passing we often got a chance to reflect on their entire lives as far as we knew them. We had a chance to put them into the context of their entire lives. Deep inside we felt that God loved them too. We also came to the understanding that God forgives much more than sometimes human beings do. This is why He is God. He loves all of His Children that much. This led us or still leads us to believe deeply that these people are in heaven. This would make them saints. The Church might never declare them to be saints as such but we deeply feel that they are with God and we have the hope that one day we too shall be with God and them in the Kingdom. From this point of view, the feast of All Saints does not just honor those the Church has publicly declared to be saints but also all those we have known in life and truly believe to be with God in the Kingdom. There is a good reason for this. We do not know everyone who is in heaven. A perfect example is that of the declared saints. Every country, ethnicity and race have people who have been declared saints by the Church but who are not known by the entire People of God. How many people know about St. Gubnitz except the Irish People? How many people know about St. Leontia who was a young girl who was martyred for her Faith? The list goes on and on. Still these saints have been declared by the Church even though their lives are not known by everyone. Given this why is it hard to believe that all of us do know and have known other men and women, boys and girls who are also in the Kingdom? Maybe they have not been put forth in the process which the Church uses to declare saints. Maybe they do not have two miracles to their name. Perhaps they have many, many more. Those who have been declared by the Church to be saints are certain people who are being put forth as examples of deep love, devotion and service to the Lord. The Church cannot name everyone after all nor does the Church need to name everyone. That does not stop us individually from believing in our own hearts that people we know or have known are in heaven. God’s Love is much bigger and broader than human limitations allow. It is from this point of view that I feel, this is just personal, that this great feast of All Saints is really reflective of all who are in the Kingdom with Continued on page 2 Page 2 St. Peter Parish, Mount Clemens God. This view also gives us a better view of God’s Love Mass Intentions for November 2-8, 2020 as experienced by each of us through others. This is why I feel that each person I meet and certainly each person I Monday, November 2 8:00a.m. help bury or are asked to pray for can be and probably is Adriana Pleban (dec) req: Family a saint in one way or another. Leslie Kelley (dec) req: Mary Morisette The second reason for this view is that human vision is Tuesday, November 3 8:00a.m. limited. By viewing people in this way does not take away Ann Lieberman (dec) req: Family from God’s right to judge. It simply expands our view of Wednesday, November 4 8:00a.m. God’s love and mercy. We are all sinners. Even the Adriana Pleban (dec) req: Family saints were sinners. Did not Peter deny Christ three Thursday, November 5 8:00a.m. times? I would hope that this approach would allow all of Joyce A. Michaud (dec) req: Family us to be more at peace with God and give us a common Friday, November 6 8:00a.m. ground on which to view and relate to one another. Leslie Kelley (dec) req: Carol Golec & Henry Leflere Saturday, November 7 4:00p.m. The feast of All Souls is also very special. All of us are Dennis O’Brien (dec) req: Family human beings. Part of that is that we have a great power Living & Deceased Members of the Marecki Family to love and be loved in return. All of us have lost family req: Family members and friends through death. The love we have Special Intention for all Veterans for them and they had for us exists long after time and Katherine Ahrens (dec) req: Family place. It is eternal. In this we reflect as far as we are Jose DeJesus (dec) req: Mary Flores able God’s Love for one another. Losing people through Dennis Kelley (dec) req: Beverly Duprey & Family death creates an ache in our hearts that may be Sunday, November 8 7:30a.m. transformed but it is always there in some form. I have For the Intentions of our Parish Family buried my father, mother, brother, sister and great friends Ann Lieberman (dec) req: Family like Fr. T.J.. I have also buried many, many people who Marsha Milled (dec) req: Joe & Fran Bieth touched me in many ways and have helped me to be who Dianne Vorhoff (dec) req: Ralph & Patty Unger I am. To tell you the truth I miss all of them. Christmas is 10:00a.m. different without my family. All of you who are in the Living & Deceased Members of the Dewan & same situation know what I mean. What is it like to lose a Donahue Families req: the Jim Dewan Family spouse or a child? I have no idea because I have not Mary Schmidt (dec) req: Anita Rosenberg gone through that ongoing pain. I never will. Frank Jewell (dec) req: Tuesday Night Threaders Ruth Heitchue (dec) req: the York Family The feast of All Souls allows us to grieve, remember, Leslie Kelley (dec) req: Dan & Linda McInerney cherish and reconnect with those whom we have lost in Cheryll Sarver Eggeman (dec) req: Ruby Duprey time but never from our hearts. It allows God to heal the 12:00 Noon losses we have felt and reaffirm for us, the living, that we For all the deceased Bishops, Priests & Deacons shall see our loved ones again. It is a special time the of the Archdiocese of Detroit Church has set apart for each one of us to be human, feel the loss an yet strengthen our Faith in God’s Love for each one of us. It is truly a sacred day just as All Saints Upcoming Meetings: is a sacred day. These will all be held in the Fr. Welch Hall. The Church in Her Wisdom has put these two days together, one after the other, to remind us that while we Worship Commission: are human we are also Eternal. All of us will experience Tuesday, November 10 at 7:00 PM death. All of us will come to know Eternal Life. Someday we will be the saints others remember hopefully. Some Education Commission: day we will be the people who are missed hopefully. Tuesday, November 17 at 7:00 PM Some day both of these feasts will pertain to each one of us. It is then and only then that all of us will know the Finance Council: fullness of God’s Love and Mercy and celebrate these Tuesday, November 24 at 7:00 PM days together. Please have a great week. God Bless.
