This typikon was prepared by Fr. Bohdan Hladio of St. Ukrainian Orthodox Church in Oshawa, Ontario, as part of the pastyr.ca project — a vounteer-initiated and maintained web portal to support the preparation, publication and dissemination of Orthodox liturgical texts and music as practised in the Eastern Eparchy of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of Canada. This typikon is based upon the original work of then Archimandrite (Getcha) — now Archbishop Job of Telmessos — an enduring foundation to which the present work is indebted. The liturgical directives contained herein conform to the rules governing the order for services found in the Typikon of the Orthodox Church.

Since this typikon has been prepared for parish usage, certain abridgements have been made. The number of troparia sung at Sunday Liturgy, for example, conforms more to practical considerations or common necessity in the context of a typical parish than to strict monastic order. In other places, fundamental assumptions are made that may not apply to all services celebrated in every commu- nity. The troparia given at the end of Vespers in this work, for example, reflect the assumption that Vespers will be invariably combined with Orthros to form a Vigil — but in your own prayerful com- munity, this may not always be the case.

The unabridged order for singing troparia at Sunday or weekday Liturgies; the order for the troparia before the Dismissal at Vespers when that Office is served on its own (i.e. apart from a Vigil); a guide to intoning the Prokiemena and the Epistle lections when multiple readings are appointed — can be found in the Appendix.

Please feel free to use this typikon yourself, or even to share it with other clergy or faithful who might make use of it for the glory of God. Please do not publish this work in physical or digital form, without my express permission.

NOTE: during the singing of the Prokeimen, the Altar cloths are changed from bright to dark. (Before the service the dark cloths are put on the Altar, tetrapod, etc. and the bright cloths are put over them in such a way that they can easily be removed).

THE CEREMONY OF MUTUAL FORGIVENESS: After the Dismissal the Priest offers a teaching about mutual forgiveness. He asks forgiveness of the faithful – and then the faithful proceed forward, ven- erate the icons and cross, and ask forgiveness of the Priest and of one another. The usual order is for the person approaching to say: “Forgive me Father (brother/sister),” to which the respondent replies: “God forgives. Forgive me, and pray for me.” The first person asks forgiveness of the cele- brant, then stands to his right, the next person of the celebrant and the first person, then stands at their right, etc. While the ceremony of mutual forgiveness is taking place the chanters traditionally chant the Paschal Verses – Let God arise... quietly. 47 *NOTE: At the prayer of St. Ephraim the Syrian during Vespers of the Great Fast – on Sunday eve- nings, we make 3 great prostrations. On Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday evenings, we make 16 prostrations, i.e., three great prostrations at each verse when the prayer is read the first time, 12 metanias (bows to the waist) at the words: “O God, cleanse me, the sinner” that follow; and anoth- er great prostration at the end, after the complete prayer has been intoned the second time,.

BEGINNING OF THE GREAT FORTY DAY FAST On weekdays during the Great Fast, the Offices are served with their own particularities, as indi- cated in the (Chasoslov) and according to the order given in the Menaion and Triodion – without reference to the Octoechos.
