Dear Graduands,

It is with great pleasure that I am able today to congratulate the graduands of 2014. The drive and aspirations of each graduating class in our tertiary institutions is always inspiring but in AeU, it is more than just a convocation ceremony. It is an achievement because it takes real commitment to have pursued and completed a degree programme whilst having to balance work and family commitments. It involves grit, determination and talent. Each of you have shown that you have it, and it’s now a new phase of a journey.

I extend my heartiest congratulations to all those graduating from AeU today more because you have made a vision of the future and taken this remarkable step to upskill and upgrade your credentials. Your achievement lies not merely in the degree you are bestowed with today but in the perseverance and hard work that you have put in, more so as working adults.

AeU views itself as an enabler to be harnessed by Asian educational institutions to increase cross-border accessibility of their programmes, especially in critical areas that are in demand for capacity building.

AeU is to work with Asian institutions in increasing access to relevant, flexible and cost effective education and training in the region. AeU will tap into the existing reservoir of programmes provided by institutions in Asia and make it available to a wider market in the region and the rest of the world.

Cross border accreditation of qualifications and mutual recognition of degrees will be greatly facilitated through the ACD platform via the Asian Credit Transfer System (ACTS) wherein an Accreditation Board and Examination Syndicate will be established as a quality assurance for AeU and its partners.

UNIVERSITY Background

Established as an initiative of Malaysia, Asia e University (AeU) is a collaborative multinational university instituted under the auspice of the Asia Cooperation Dialogue (ACD). AeU is at present supported by thirty three (33) ACD member countries through-out the world.

The 33 participating ACD member countries leverage on AeU’s e-education platform to increase higher education accessibility for all and narrow the digital divide. Through our shared collective expertise and strategic linkages with our numerous educational partners, AeU delivers programmes that are imbued with the goals of flexibility, quality and relevance to provide a truly personalised learning experience for everybody today. The Asia Cooperation Dialogue (ACD) is an organisation which has brought together governments from thirty three (33) Asian countries since its establishment in 2002. The organisation aims to foster Asian cooperation at the continental level, and integrate several regional cooperation organisations. Such are: the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN); the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) and; the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC).

Being an international university, AeU is leveraging on Thrust 5 of the National Higher Education Strategic Plan of Malaysia (2008) through collaborative networking by engaging international teaching staff and advocating for student mobility via the Asian Credit Transfer System (ACTS). 22 ASIA e UNIVERSITY 4TH CONVOCATION 2014

UNIVERSITY PROFILE

AeU is a private tertiary education institution incorporated under the Private Higher Educational Institutions Act 1996. Established in 2007, AeU has grown to become one of a leading provider of open and distance learning (ODL) in Asia. As an ODL institution, AeU’s focus is to provide accessible and affordable higher education for all. The University was brought into existence for a new approach to tertiary education that gives rise to greater flexibility in learning. The philosophy is based on the belief that quality education should be made available and accessible to all people regardless of demographics.

In just seven swift years, AeU has established a remarkable reputation as the acclaimed institution of choice which provides knowledge acquisition for human capital needs in the region through e-education.

The University has been acclaimed with top honours and awards. Such are; as the winner of BrandLaureate Awards 2010 for “Best Brand in Education - e-Education,” and the winner of the Asia Pacific Entrepreneurship Awards 2010 under the “Most Promising Entrepreneur” category. Additionally in 2012, the University was announced as the best ACD Project during the ACD Meeting in Kuwait.

AeU currently offers more than forty (40) academic programmes at all levels, ranging from Diplomas to PhDs through five (5) academic schools; the School of Management, School of Education & Cognitive Sciences, School of Information & Communications Technology, School of Arts, Humanities & Social Sciences and School of Graduate Studies. All academic programmes are internationally benchmarked, approved by the Malaysian Ministry of Education (MOE) and accredited by the Malaysian Qualifications Agency (MQA). In addition AeU academic programmes are also recognised by several ACD member and non-ACD countries. REVOLUTIONISING LEARNING

AeU has adopted a flexible mode of delivery through a ‘blended learning’ approach which comprises of self-managed learning, face-to-face learning and online learning.

Learners are provided with learning materials in the form of electronic content accessible through AeU learning management system (myPLS). Learners are required to attend tutorial classes or seminar sessions once a month and participate in online discussion forums with their academic facilitators and peers. AeU ‘s pedagogical model, adopts a new way of learning and teaching method which creates an educational experience that is more responsive to learners’ needs and aspirations. The AeU Knowledge Centre is one of the most comprehensive online libraries in the country. It has close to 7,000 titles of printed books and subscribes to over 100,000 e-books, 71,000 e-journals, and 1.6 million e-theses titles. The Knowledge Centre adopts an important role in supporting teaching, learning and research activities within AeU’s learning communities.

The meeting proposed a list of recommendations in the 2004 areas of policy, technology, human capacity building and knowledge sharing, which included the setting-up of an ACD Consultative e-Education Committee and a regional centre to coordinate e-Learning initiatives in the region.

11 March 2005 Post-ACD e-Education Workshop, Malaysia

This meeting chaired by the Director General of the Ministry of Higher Education (MOHE) Malaysia unanimously agreed that Malaysia should table a proposal to the Islamabad ACD Ministerial meeting on the establishment of AeU.

6 April 2005 4th ACD Ministerial Meeting, Pakistan

The Ministers of Foreign Affairs of the 26 member countries then accepted the proposal on the formation of AeU and reaffirmed their countries’ commitment with the following 2005 declaration: Declaration No. 6: Resolve to ensure the provision of easily accessible and expanded educational opportunities for the people of Asia with the proposal for the establishment of an Asia e University (AeU) which will be an instrument for greater Asia-wide cooperation in closing the digital divide and spearheading e-Education efforts to meet future challenges, for the benefit of the region.

23 – 24 May 2006 5th ACD Ministerial Meeting, Qatar

Representatives of the 28 ACD governments unanimously 2006 accepted Malaysia’s proposal to implement the proposed AeU. This was reflected in the Doha ACD Declaration 1.5:

Declaration No. 1.5: We agree to support the successful implementation of Asia e University as an instrument for human capacity building, closing the digital divide, increasing higher education accessibility, and spearheading e-Education efforts for the benefit of all member countries.

26 December 2006 Approval and Support by Malaysian Government

The Malaysian Government agreed that the University would be established under Part III of the Private Higher Educational Institutions Act 1996 (555) and that it is to be led by the private sector.

18 April 2007 Establishment of AeU

AeU was registered with the Ministry of Higher Education 2007 Malaysia to establish the University on 18 April 2007.

5 – 6 June 2007 6th ACD Ministerial Meeting, Republic of South Korea

Representatives of 30 ACD governments unanimously accepted Malaysia’s proposal on the establishment and implementation of AeU and this was reflected in the Seoul IT ACD Declaration 4:

3 August 2008 SPEED Graduation Ceremony

The first graduation of a batch of 45 students forthe Executive Diploma in Mosque Management Programme conducted by the School of Professional and Executive Education (SPEED) and the Islamic Religious Department of Perak (Jabatan Agama Islam Perak, JAIP) took place in Ipoh, Perak. They were conferred the Executive Diploma in Mosque Management by Raja Muda Perak DYTM Raja Nazrin Shah Ibni Sultan Azlan Muhibbuddin Shah.

16 October 2008 7th ACD Ministerial Meeting, Republic of Kazakhstan

The Ministers of Foreign Affairs and other Heads of Delegation 2009 from 30 member countries of the Asia Cooperation Dialogue (ACD) acknowledge the following:

The Government of Malaysia reaffirms its commitment as the Prime Mover of e-Education in ensuring the success and sustainability of Asia e University. Malaysia expresses her appreciation of the support of member countries to AeU and particularly in agreeing to voluntarily explore the ways and means for the establishment of the Asia Credit Transfer System (ACTS).

The Government of Malaysia would also like to put on record that the Republic of India, through the Distance Education Council has in true spirit and letter of the ACD charter has agreed to recognise Asia e University. This is a milestone and will definitely lead to greater collaboration between Asia e University and the Institutions of Higher Learning in India to not only narrow the digital divide but also to bring internationally recognised education and training programmes to the peoples of Asia.

25 October 2010 Awarded the MSC Malaysia Status

The Government of Malaysia awarded Asia e University the 2010 MSC Malaysia status for Institutions of Higher Learning to Asia E Learning Sdn Bhd for having fulfilled the necessary set of criteria in meeting the objectives of the MSC Malaysia. MSC Malaysia status entitles AeU to the incentives, rights and privileges provided for in the package of selected incentive, to continued adherence to the aforementioned criteria and the specific conditions attached to the Award.

25 October 2010 Selected as ‘the gateway university’

16 April 2011 Malaysia Education Online (MEdO) Portal Launch

The Malaysia Education Online (MEdO) portal was launched in conjunction with the Dasar e-Pembelajaran Negara (DePAN), by the Minister of Higher Education, Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin, at the Pan Pacific KLIA. This portal is an initiative proposed by PEMANDU under the Malaysian Economic Transformation Programme (ETP) to bring Malaysian education online to the global market.

Academic gowns or robes have been a major part of the formal attire at Convocation ceremonies. It has a long colourful history origination from the Middle Ages. While maintaining a certain degree of tradition; convocation robes may incorporate specific details defined by the university. Chow Choi Chin Master of Education (M.Ed)

Chow Choi Chin works full time as an accountant at ALZAC VIVA Sdn Bhd. She received her BSc. (Hons) in Accountancy from University Malaya in 1996. She has been an accountant for 18 years focusing on strategic planning, costing, budgeting and credit administration.

Interestingly, her wish is to be an early childhood educator. With encouragement from her husband and three children, she enrolled for the Master of Education in 2010 at AeU, specializing in Early Childhood Education.

Her most challenging task at AeU was striking a balance between work, family and a life as a student. However, with the support of AeU’s staff and academic facilitators who were passionate in imparting knowledge, she continued to strife to complete her degree. She also attributes her success to the unwavering support of her family and fellow classmates.

The e-learning paradigm adopted at AeU made available all learning materials and online databases needed for completion of assignments, preparation for examinations and the research project. She had access to materials anytime and anywhere at her own convenience making her journey at AeU even more pleasant.

Naina binti Abdul Karim Master of Education (M.Ed)

Naina has been a lecturer at the School of Allied Health Science, since 2008 in critical care nursing and community development. She received her Bachelor of Science ((Hons) degree in Human Development from Universiti Putra Malaysia in 2004 and enrolled at AeU to pursue the Master of Education (M.Ed) programme in January, 2011.

Like many adult learners, she had the mammoth task of having to manage her time between family, work and studying at AeU. However, with the support of staff and academic facilitators who challenged her to think and reflect on her role as an educator enouraged her to push on. Support of her family played a significant role in completing the programme as a part-time student.

Also, the flexibility of the programme enabled her to schedule her time in meeting deadlines, reading the learning materials and discussing online. The learning materials were intresting, friendly and easy to understand which made her learning easier.

Completing the programme has enhanced her confidence as a health educator. She seeks to improve the teaching- learning experience of students at her university by applying the principles and concepts gleaned from various courses. Her advise to prospective students is to prioritise and manage their time effectively as going back to school is a serious commitment. She plans to continue with her doctrate in education. RATHI AMBIGAI Bachelor of Education (TESL) (Hons)

Rathi Ambigai is a teacher at Sekolah Kebangsaan, Seksyen 2, Bandar Kinarara, Puchong. She completed her STPM from Sekolah Menengah Raja Kelsom, Kuala Kangsar and later obtained a diploma from the Institute of Teacher Education (IPG), Batu Pahat to purse a diploma.

She has been teaching English to young children for 18 years and loves what she is doing. She has made a concerted effort to keep up with best practices in teaching English as a second language and believes that learners should be given individualised instruction to succeed.

With the encouragement of her husband and two children, she registered with AeU to pursue the Bachelor Education (TESL) in March, 2011. Her journey as an adult learner has been most challenging having to juggle between work, family and studying. She found the support accorded to her by various academic facilitators and staff at AeU has inspired her to push forward.

She finds the e-learning pedagogy adopted by AeU as convenient giving her the flexibility in accessing learning materials, discussing online whenever and wherever. Her experience at AeU has broadened her perspective of teaching English as a second language and provided insights into how children learn.

It had been a long and arduous journey for Rathi, but certainly a very rewarding experience. She owes her success to the constant support of her husband, children and her classmates whom she enjoyed interacting with and treasures their friendship. Wan Nor Abidah binti Ibrahim is a teacher at Sekolah Kebangsaan Janglu, Kuala Ramping, Pahang. She completed her secondary school at MRSM Taiping, Perak and obtained a diploma in teaching from the Institute of Teacher Education. She has been teaching English in primary school for more than 15 years and believes that there is always something new to learn in education. With the support and encouragement of her husband and children, she continued her studies and enrolled for the Bachelor of Education (TESL) at AeU in March, 2011.

As an adult learner, having to manage family, work and studying was not an easy task. It is certainly admirable of Adibah to return to school after all these years. She owes her success to the support of AeU staff, encouragement from academic facilitators and the pleasant moments she shared with her classmates.

The flexible mode of learning adopted at AeU allowed access to learning materials, web resources and online discussion anytime, anwhere adapted well to Adibah with her hectic schedule. The various courses offered encouraged her to think critically about her teaching and how the new ideas learned may be creatively applied in teaching English to young learners.

The road towards getting a degree was tough with many twists and turns but Adibah believes that as long as one has passion the hurdles are urmountable and the journey can be pleasant. Her family was most supportive during her sojourn at AeU and hopes that her children will follow in her footsteps.
