During the Middle Ages, the two types of maces-one a scepter and symbol of royal authority, the other a weapon-gradually evolved into a .------Polished Rosewood Upper Grip symbol of lawful power and regal authority. Beginning in fourteenth­ century , the academic mace became part of the pomp and ceremony of university commencements, denoting the authority of the University to confer .---Cast Silver Globus academic degrees. The Honorable Peter C. Economus Kim Taylor

Today's commencement speaker, The Honorable Kim Taylor, the student commencement speaker, Peter C. Economus, was appointed United States graduates today with a Bachelor of Arts in Geography. District Judge for the Northern District of Ohio on She was inducted into the Phi Kappa Phi Honor July 3, 1995. Prior to being named to the federal bench, Society in 2010 and the Gamma Theta Upsilon, the Judge Economus served on the Court of Common International Geographical Honor Society, in 2011. Pleas of Mahoning County from 1982 to 1995. He During her years as a YSU student, Taylor has been assumed senior status on July 3, 2009 and is currently awarded the JoAnn Knapic Academic Achievement a visiting District Judge in the Southern District of award, the Vere Stalker Shaklee & Nina Pierce Shaklee Ohio. He is also a recipient of the University of Akron Law Alumni Association Outstanding Alumni Award, the Ohio Common Pleas Judges Association's Golden Gavel Award, the Youngstown Hearing and Speech Center's Great Communicator Award for community service, and the Ellis Island Medal of Honor. Judge Economus and his wife, Marie, whom he met while they were students at Youngstown State University, have three daughters and three granddaughters.

Teresa Riley, Ph.D. Director of Faculty Relations and Professor

Teresa Riley earned a B.A. in Political Science and Economics from Wittenberg University and an M.A. and Ph.D. in Economics from Syracuse University. She started teaching economics at Youngstown State University in 1984. One of her major interests is K-12 economic education. She has worked with the Ohio Council on Economic Education to offer workshops for local teachers focusing on how to integrate basic economic and financial literacy concepts into their teaching. She was the primary content author for eleven different computerized instructional programs for introductory economics and statistics, one of which was recognized with an EDUCOM/NCRIPTAL award in 1990. She was part of a five-person team of YSU faculty that received a National Science Foundation grant to develop and test the effectiveness of a simulated economy in which students take on the role of producers and consumers. Her work has been published in the Journal of Economic Education and she serves as a manuscript reviewer for that journal. She is a member of the American Economic Association, Omicron Delta Epsilon, and Phi Kappa Phi. She served two one-year terms as Acting Chair of the Department of Economics. Currently she is a Professor of Economics and Director of Faculty Relations.
