Dave Brubeck's Definitive “Jazzanians”
Journal of Jazz Studies vol. 9, no. 1, pp. 53-93 (Summer 2013) Dave Brubeck’s Definitive “Jazzanians” Vasil Cvetkov On December 5, 2012, American contemporary music lost one of its most important personalities—pianist and composer Dave Brubeck, who died one day before his 92nd birthday. His death marks the passing of one of the most creative and versatile musicians in American history. Widely known as an innovative jazz musician, Brubeck’s skills in writing and arranging music for classical ensembles went far beyond jazz traditions, making him a subject of interest and investigation for contemporary music researchers. He became an emblematic figure for those, who, like me, received a classical music upbringing and became fascinated by his ability to fuse jazz and classical sources into the specific style that eventually became his trademark. Despite having received a classical education, I have always been attracted by the jazz sound, so that discovering and demonstrating the plenitude of Brubeck's legacy became a natural research goal in my graduate studies. In planning this personal tribute to the late Dave Brubeck, I came to the conclusion that, perhaps, the most eloquent examples of his unique compositional style could be demonstrated around the story of a little tetrachord. Throughout a period of 17 years (1987-2003), it inspired Brubeck to create five important compositions and came to be known, by those who love Brubeck's music, as the “Jazzanians tetrachord.” The compositions varied in form, covering the full spectrum of jazz, classical, and fusion styles. I call these compositions “realizations.” Trying to trace Brubeck’s realizations chronologically through that 17- year period, I first examined published scores but discovered that there were mysterious gaps. -

(August 2008) Adalet Barış Günersel, B.A., Oberlin College Chair of Advisory Committee: Dr. Stephanie Knight This study investigates socio-cultural factors that impact the lives of highly creative writers, specifically, novelists in a specific socio-cultural context, Turkey. Research objectives included the investigation of the definition of creativity, creative processes and products by highly creative Turkish writers, and socio-cultural factors that influenced the development of their creativity. The qualitative case study was used and interviews with four participants, or cases, shed light onto the focus of the study. Four novelists who fit certain criteria were selected: (a) they have invented, designed, and produced creative work regularly and their work has influenced Turkish literature; (b) they were Turkish citizens who have lived 75% of their lives in Turkey and received their education in Turkey; and (c) they varied in age and gender. -

Box 1346 Ann Arbor, Ml 48106- 1346 Abstract During the first half of the twentieth century, the ethnically segmented Ottoman empire was transformed into a nation state of Turkish citizens. This thesis explores and evaluates the representation of ethnic minorities in Turkish fiction against a background of demographic, political, and social change. Within this context, novels and short stories of selected writers have been studied with a view to determining differences of experience, perception and attitude. The writers include: Huseyin Rahmi Giirpmar, Halide Edip Adivar, Re§at Nuri Guntekin, Halikarnas Bahk9isi, Orhan Kemal, Haldun Taner, Sait Faik, and Ya§ar Kemal. The thesis comprises an introduction, three chapters and a conclusion. The Introduction gives a brief overview of historical events relating to demographic changes and ethnic minority status, and looks at the popular perception of minorities in the Ottoman performance arts. -
The Fener Greek Patriarchate
PERCEPTIONS JOURNAL OF INTERNATIONAL AFFAIRS March - May 1998 Volume III - Number 1 THE FENER GREEK PATRIARCHATE A. SUAT BİLGE Dr. A. Suat Bilge is Professor of International Relations and Ambassador (retired). A controversy concerning the Fener Greek Patriarchate started in Turkey in 1997. It was stated that the Patriarchate could be used both for and against the interests of Turkey. On the one hand, it was claimed that the Patriarchate had intentions to establish itself as an ecumenical church and become a state like the Vatican; that the Orthodox world was trying to gain power in Turkey. On the other hand, some people stated that Turkey could benefit from the prestigious position of the Patriarchate and suggested an improvement in its status. First of all, I want to stress that the Patriarchate no longer enjoys the importance it once possessed in Greek-Turkish relations. Today, the Patriarchate is trying to become influential in Turkish-American relations. The Fener Greek Patriarchate is a historical religious institution. After the division of the Roman Empire, it became the church of the Byzantine Empire and obtained the status of an ecumenical church. With the collapse of the Byzantine Empire, the Patriarchate became the church of the Greeks living within the Ottoman Empire. Besides its functions as a religious institution, the Patriarchate was also granted the right to act as a ministry of Greek affairs by Mehmet II. He granted increased authority and privileges to the Patriarch. After the collapse of the Ottoman Empire, the Fener Greek Patriarchate became the church of the Greeks living within the Republic of Turkey. -
